I got the update his morning through Steam and when I started the simulator, I had no audio in any part of the game. All my other apps, also through Steam, have their appropriate audio. My in-game audio settings are all set on and volume settings are well over mid-range. Is there someplace I can check to determine if the game is accessing the correct audio output device?

I use Avast for virus protection and if I disable it I do get sound in the game. However, since the problem didn't exist until the latest update, and does not occur with any other of my Steam distributed games, I have to believe that the update broke something and it is not a virus protection problem. The game is usable but, until/unless the audio issue gets fixed, I cannot recommend it to anyone.
Even AVAST forums are aware and have posted a workaround for this. These are some of the issues encountered with free antivirus. AVAST has a history of blocking safe applications. To not recommend TSC because only one antivirus has an issue with TSC is very disingenuous. Some players recommend replacing AVAST with another A/V program. If you want a free A/V use Windows Defender. It is already installed on Windows systems, you just need to enable it. I myself quit using AVAST for this same reason years ago. Reasoning: if only one A/V product has an issue, is it the game or the A/V. Should AVAST modify their product to correct this blocking of audio if it is the only A/V to do so. In my opinion AVAST bears the responsibility to correct this. Please read this thread in AVAST forums. https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=325234.msg1711330#msg1711330
Well, it is Avast's issue. TSC uses a customised OpenAL.dll, which is approved by Steam and Microsoft Windows Security - only some 3rd party AV Scammer Avast thinks it's not good. So who's the authority... get rid of that bloatware if you ask me. Money for nothing, you're even paying them to have access to all your data. Think about it.
You only joined today and your first comments are nothing to do with the problem Those of us who don't have Avast or AVG don't have a sound problem
For anybody wanting a workaround to this... When you hit 'Play Game' and the TS pop-up appears, click on your volume button on the right hand side of the Windows toolbar and keep it 'active'. For me, I click somewhere between 20-30% volume every second (but make sure it's different to the last click), all the way through the pop-up screen and main loading screen. You should hear the Windows sound every time you click. This seems to force the audio to remain 'active' until you're in game, where it will remain. Annoying, but less so than no sound!
