Hello all, TrainGeek08 here, and today I am suggesting the South Humberside Main Line for TSW4 as it has a variety of passenger and freight operations and it will introduce a new operator to the game.

    Route Information:
From Doncaster the line forms a joint route with the Sheffield–Hull line to Hatfield, passing Hatfield Colliery where the lines diverge at Thorne Junction. The line runs across Thorne and Hatfield Moors to run along the Stainforth and Keadby Canal toward the River Trent. Close to Keadby Power Station the route turns around Keadby and crosses the river Trent at Keadby Bridge. The line then climbs and passes over the M181 motorway and on viaduct to cross the Lincoln Edge at Scunthorpe. Through Scunthorpe, the line passes through the steelworks into the Ancholme Valley before crossing under the M180 motorway. To the west of Barnetby the line branches further at Wrawby Junction with the Grimsby–Lincoln–Newark line turning south towards Market Rasen, and the Kirton Lindsey line, (formerly a continuation of the Sheffield to Lincoln Line). After Barnetby railway station the line crosses the Lincolnshire Wolds passing quarries at Melton Ross and passes close to Humberside Airport near to where it diverges with the Barton Line and a branch which serves Immingham Docks close to Ulceby. The main line continues to Grimsby roughly parallel with the A180 road though Habrough railway station, Stallingborough railway station, Great Coates railway station to Grimsby railway station. The route then passes Grimsby Docks railway station which is open only during daylight hours, towards Grimsby Docks, and then on to New Clee railway station running along the humber bank/sea wall to Cleethorpes railway station.

    (Principal) Stations:

    Doncaster:

Doncaster railway station is on the East Coast Main Line serving the city of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It is 155 miles 77 chains (251 km) down the line from London King's Cross and is situated between Retford and York on the main line. It is managed by London North Eastern Railway. It is a major passenger interchange between the main line, Cross Country Route and local services running across the North of England. It is also the point for which London North Eastern Railway services branching off to Leeds diverge from the main route continuing north towards Edinburgh.

    Scunthorpe:

Scunthorpe railway station serves the town of Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire, England. The station is located a short walk from the town centre, on Station Road. As one approaches the station by road, there is a pay and display car park with around 50 spaces, including 2 disabled spaces. From the car park, it is a short walk to the Ticket Office. Close to the entrance, there is a public telephone box. The station has two platforms. Platform 1 serves mainly eastbound trains toward Grimsby/Cleethorpes, although some Northern Trains "local stopper" services toward Doncaster do use this platform through the day. All westbound TransPennine Express (TPE) services, and most Northern services use Platform 2. This platform is accessible via a footbridge over the tracks and is not accessible for wheelchairs or mobility-impaired passengers. Lifts however, became available at this station in spring 2019.

    Barnetby:

Barnetby railway station serves the village of Barnetby-le-Wold in North Lincolnshire, England. It is operated by TransPennine Express, with East Midlands Railway and Northern Trains also serving the station. Barnetby railway station is unstaffed, and is popular with railway enthusiasts for the freight which passes through. It is also the closest station to Humberside Airport, located 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to the east.

    Barton-on-Humber:

Barton-on-Humber railway station serves the town of Barton-upon-Humber in North Lincolnshire, England. The station, which was once the terminus of a 3+1⁄4-mile (5 km) branch line from New Holland, is these days the terminus of the Barton line services operating from Cleethorpes. It is situated 22+3⁄4 miles (37 km) west of the resort. There is a connecting Stagecoach in Hull bus service from the town to Hull across the Humber Bridge which was introduced on the opening of the bridge to replace the New Holland Ferry. Approach to the branch was by a triangular junction at New Holland which enabled passenger trains to operate a New Holland Pier to Barton service in connection with the ferries and rail services from Cleethorpes and for freight to have direct access from the main line via Ulceby Junction. When the Humber Bridge opened the junction was removed and passenger services operated directly from Cleethorpes via the new platform at New Holland.

    Grimsby Town:

Grimsby Town railway station serves the town of Grimsby in North East Lincolnshire, England. It is operated on a daily basis by TransPennine Express, and is also served by East Midlands Railway and Northern Trains services. The station is located on the South Humberside Main Line, which runs between Cleethorpes and Doncaster, and is part of the South TransPennine Route.

    Cleethorpes:

Cleethorpes railway station is a railway station serving the seaside town of Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire, England. The station is managed by TransPennine Express, with East Midlands Railway and Northern Services also using the station. The station is the terminus and start of multiple services.

    Points of Interest (POI):

    Doncaster Works:
    upload_2023-12-1_18-51-18.jpeg

Doncaster Railway Works is a railway workshop located in Doncaster, England. Also referred to as The Plant, it was established by the Great Northern Railway in 1853, replacing the previous works in Boston and Peterborough. Until 1867 it undertook only repairs and maintenance. Today the remaining part is operated by Wabtec.

    River Don:

The River Don (also called River Dun in some stretches) is a river in South Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It rises in the Pennines, west of Dunford Bridge, and flows for 69 miles (111 km) eastwards, through the Don Valley, via Penistone, Sheffield, Rotherham, Mexborough, Conisbrough, Doncaster and Stainforth. It originally joined the Trent, but was re-engineered by Cornelius Vermuyden as the Dutch River in the 1620s, and now joins the River Ouse at Goole. Don Valley is a UK parliamentary constituency near the Doncaster stretch of the river.

    Keadby Bridge:

Keadby Bridge, more formally known as the King George V Bridge, crosses the River Trent near Althorpe and Keadby in Lincolnshire, England. It was designed by Alfred Charles Gardner FRSE MIME.

    River Trent:

The Trent is third in the list of longest rivers in the United Kingdom. Its source is in Staffordshire, on the southern edge of Biddulph Moor. It flows through and drains the North Midlands into the Humber Estuary. The river is known for dramatic flooding after storms and spring snowmelt, which in the past often caused the river to change course. The river passes through Stoke-on-Trent, Stone, Staffordshire, Rugeley, Burton-upon-Trent and Nottingham before joining the River Ouse, Yorkshire at Trent Falls to form the Humber Estuary, which empties into the North Sea between Kingston upon Hull in Yorkshire and Immingham in Lincolnshire. The wide Humber estuary has often been described as the boundary between the Midlands and the north of England.

    Scunthorpe Steelworks:

The Iron and Steel Industry in Scunthorpe was established in the mid 19th century, following the discovery and exploitation of middle Lias ironstone east of Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Initially iron ore was exported to iron producers in South Yorkshire. Later, after the construction of the Trent, Ancholme and Grimsby Railway (1860s) gave rail access to the area local iron production rapidly expanded using local ironstone and imported coal or coke. The local ore was relatively poor in iron (around 25% average) and high in lime (CaCO3) requiring co-smelting with more acidic silicious iron ores. The growth of industry in the area led to the development of the town of Scunthorpe in a formerly sparsely populated entirely agricultural area.

    Grimsby Docks:

The Port of Grimsby is located on the south bank of the Humber Estuary at Grimsby in North East Lincolnshire. Sea trade out of Grimsby dates to at least the medieval period. The Grimsby Haven Company began dock development in the late 1700s, and the port was further developed from the 1840s onwards by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MSLR) and its successors. The port has had three main dock systems:

    Immingham Power Station:

Immingham Combined Heat and Power Plant (also known as VPI Immingham) is a combined heat and power, gas-fired power plant adjacent to the Humber Oil Refinery near to South Killingholme North Lincolnshire, England. The plant opened in 2004 with a 730 MW generating capacity, and was expanded to 1,180 MW in 2009; the station was developed by ConocoPhillips until its sale to Vitol in 2013.

    Humber Bridge:

The Humber Bridge, near Kingston upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, is a 2.22 km (2,430 yd; 7,300 ft; 1.38 mi) single-span road suspension bridge, which opened to traffic on 24 June 1981. When it opened, the bridge was the longest of its type in the world; it was not surpassed until 1998, with the completion of the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, and is now the twelfth-longest.

Would love to see this route in-game, somewhat similar to Tees Valley but with different locos. Personally I would like to see the Class 60 and Class 153 as included trains, which might be a suitable project for Just Trains as they have produced those before in TSC. If modern day licensing cannot be obtained, a 1990's era route would be the best alternative choice, with layering from TVL, WCL and BPO.

As far as I know, it could also be the first route in-game with 'complete' end-to-end freight journeys between the docks and the steelworks with merry-go-round trains.

Yeah, it would be a route of the 'best of both worlds' as you could get end-to-end points for both passenger and freight workings and I can see this route selling really well regardless of what era it is set in :)

Wow! This would be really cool! As mentioned above, being able to drive end to end in both freight and passenger services is a major accomplishment for any route is tsw. And I'd love to drive the 156 and 185 in tsw! Brilliant suggestion! :D

I'm glad that this route interests you mate, I think including the freight aspect would increase the amount of services you could do compared to if it just had passenger workings as Immingham is regularly served on a daily basis as is Scunthorpe :)

Scunthorpe Steelworks would open up the opportunity to layer in the Class 08 as well, so there will be shunting on this route as well :)

I support this. Scunthorpe is my local station.

What year is this set in? Only, the 150/2 can sub in from WCL to do the Scunthorpe-Doncaster stopper (the 158 between Doncaster and Hatfield & Stainforth) both in Northern livery, if set in present day.

This route is based in 2017 and it was until I researched Cleethorpes that I realised Northern ran along this route but the 150 and 158 could be layered in but in the older Northern livery :)

If 2017, then the 142 would be better placed for the stopper. The 150 only started on the route when the Pacer retired. :)

Yeah, fair enough, it would need to be the Cummins-engined variant from Blackpool Branches in ex-Northern Rail livery :)

Great suggestion mate, this is a great section of track, and I am a fan of the 185s so would be nice to have them in game.
