Set in 1985, this route would feature the Cardiff - Portsmouth workings whilst they were still in the hands of BR Blue 33s and Mk1s as well as local DMU services along the route Proposed Rolling Stock Class 33/0 in BR Blue livery With 1550 horsepower, the Class 33 is the most powerful of the little Sulzer engines produced during the early 1960s by the Birmingham Carriage & Wagon Works. They were confined to the Southern region for the majority of their working lives but in their earlier years they could be found on freight traffic from the Southern Region to locations as far north as York. The locos are capable of 85mph and would be hauling 4 or 5 BR Blue/Grey Mk1s on these Portsmouth workings as well as substituting for Class 50s on services from Salisbury to London Waterloo. Class 205 in BR Blue/Grey livery The Class 205 were the mainstay of the local services between Portsmouth, Eastleigh (not included with this route), Southampton and Salisbury. 34 sets were built in total, with the English Electric engine fitted to the 3car units making a distinctive thumping sound which earned them their nickname of 'Thumpers'. The class were also regulars on Marshlink services to Uckfield before being replaced by Class 171s in 2004.
