Now for something a little different... How about a virtual spotting or "bashing" log to keep track of each traction unit number that you've driven or been hauled by/travelled on within the game? If you clear a particular class could generate a nice little Steam achievement. It should be possible as we have the "Hellfire" Railrover and Scottish Rover games which not only tick off the locos etc. you've travelled behind but also the mileage accrued behind/on each machine. One of my big regrets about Hellfire is that as a purely text based application always felt a bit abstract, but being able to walk around stations, spot the last 377 on the list you need to clear the class jump on and drive it has a certain appeal.
Yeah, but I was thinking that tracking the train equipment would be impossible if the numbers keep changing and moving around. Or am I misunderstanding and you're actually talking about tracking the numbers themselves and not the equipment?
The actual locomotive or traction unit number. Surely you understand the concept of engine spotting or bashing, in the case of the latter travelling behind (or in the case of the game driving) a particular loco? This post gives a bit of insight... Loco Hauled Bashing stories 1980s/90s | RailUK Forums (railforums.co.uk) As regards the detail, well each member of the particular fleet class has its own number so however the game generates those from the range which actually exists will determine whether you get a "scratch" or a "dud".
I surely do not, sorry . I've heard of people recording all the numbers from trains going by, generally in the context of tracking the movements of freight stock here in the U.S., but what you're talking about seems a bit different.
Bashing is a bit like train spotting, but instead of ticking off the train or loco numbers when you see them, you actually have to be hauled by in the case of locos or travel on in the case of units, to mark off in the book. I admit it is a particularly British element of tge railway hobby.
