Pleasantly surprised to see when I loaded up TSC today, Steam now offers the option of a default selection of 64 bit, which saves you selecting it every....single... time.

(I know others have used a desktop shortcut to the 64 bit exe, but for some reason this option has never worked for me, when I'd click on it nothing would happen.)

Try setting up the desktop shortcut again
Go in to your Railworks folder and you will see RailWorks64.exe - right click > Create Shortcut.
It will stick the shortcut in the same folder - Cut it from there and place on the Desktop.
Don't remember you still have to start the Steam Client first
Which is not that obvious if you normally start it from there

I think that was it - if I just click the shortcut, I get a message saying I have to start the Steam client first - but if I've opened Steam, it's just as easy to open TS from there, so no real benefit. (I think I misremembered that it was possible to open TS by just clicking the shortcut and bypassing Steam.)

When you get in to the Steam Client you have to pick how you wish to start the game
I have a shortcut for both 32 + 64 versions on the desktop

Yes, saw this new feature for ETS2 too. Good one.

Not any more it seems. Today I got a new dialogue box offering to save my choice as default, which I did for 64 bit. So now when I open TS, it opens directly in 64 bit and bypasses that 32/64 bit dialogue box.

Would you mind doing a cache clear test?

I just want to check that clearing the cache and restarting now links into that new option (thank you valve, great QoL upgrade!) and boots 64 bit not 32 bit :)

Is this the prelude to 32bit being removed completely?

This is still not affected. Restarting from within TS will still launch 32-bit - it does not read the Steam settings. But you can quit TS manually anyway after Cache Clearing if you need to do it via the button.
