Since Steam has been announced, I'd like to propose a route. It's only small but can provide plenty of gameplay. The route starts in Sunderland, and heads south. At Ryhope, it diverges the Durham Coast Line, and heads towards Seaton, and south to Murton. At Murton the line splits, with one part running via Hetton and Pittington, and until the 1930s reached Durham Elvet.
The main line, however, heads south to South Hetton (just before reaching here, a freight only line to South Hetton and Murton collieries diverges. After South Hetton, the line goes to Haswell, before turning South-East to Wingate and Castle Eden, before going further East via Hesleden and Hart before re-joining the Durham Coast Line and arriving at Hartlepool (then, West Hartlepool).

This offers a lot of freight opportunities as well as passenger services, which ceased in 1952. Parts of the line serving the collieries survived until the early 1990s.

There's plenty of opportunity for various locomotives. I'd highly recommend a J94 for shunting, as well as a large tank engine (such as a V1/V3) for passenger runs and a tender locomotive for the heavy loads and other passenger runs.

Do tell me what you think of this :)
