OK Guys I really feel like the end of the road for Gen 8 consoles (PS4 & XBOX1) Has finally arrived with the announcements DTG Have been giving on in their articles: Oh well, guess we have come a long way and it is with a heavy heart that we announce that Gen 8 just cant take these routes anymore, RIP Gen 8 Consoles 2020-2025, Any thoughts? Or maybe a *Gen 8 Miracle* May happen in the future? Who knows?
Come way too late but it looks like gen 8 will lose support this summer. But if the Frankfurt s bahn timetable is anything to go by, then it seems tsw is gonna completely fold on console. Not the way it should’ve gone
It’s a difficult one for sure. They have definitely had their day, but there’s still lots of people using them. But I don’t think dropping Gen 8 will make a jot of difference to the quality of DLC going forwrd
If this is true it is a risky move and may be a serious mistake. I would guess that there are still substantial numbers of players using the gen8 consoles. In any case, this isn't going to improve the game for the rest of us, as some people mistakenly think.
Okay honestly they could've released the 420 on Last Gen consoles too. It's just a loco dlc nothing more and most Gen 8 users have been waiting for the 420 since 2020...
I suppose the same could be said for the HKA hopper pack or the Metrolink loco DLC. But if the main route that it will belong to has reductions to the 8th gen or isn't on 8th gen at all then it doesn't make sense to release the DLC on 8th either. -- I mean, not to be that guy but Dovetail don't have to even release TSW6 if they don't want to. At the end of the day and as much as we as players might like it, DTG and/or Focus aren't required to run their business decisions by the player base. If dropping support for 8th gen going forward is what they feel makes the best sense then that's their call to make.
Of course we don't have to agree with that choice and the best most effective thing you can do to get a business' attention is vote with your wallet. Or buy some shares and vote with an actual vote.. I don't really understand how all that shareholder bollocks works tbf
Yes i think train sim world has reached the end of the line as far as the Playstation 4 & Xbox one is concerned leaving 9th Gen users with a comprised version reduced time-tables etc etc until Sony & Microsoft unveil There 10th Gen consoles hopeful in the 1-2 years will hear announcements about the PlayStation 6 & another Version of Xbox
There is only one route currently touting a reduced timetable on 9th gen and it's not one I planned to buy anyway so it's not really a super big issue to me. And the routes I do play have gotten SO MUCH BETTER going from a PS4 to PS5 so they've knocked it for 4 at least.
Probably gonna hold off entirely even on gen 9 for a few months after that reduced timetable. If its got to the point they can't even get the thing running on current gen I could definitely see them giving up on tsw6 coming to consoles.
I don't know about anyone else but the reason I wanted to get off 8th gen and onto 9th gen was because it is old AF as well as WH40K and other current gen games. Are people really out there spending $700 on a new console JUST for TSW or something?
We all knew it was coming, it was inevitable. TSW has become increasingly unstable on gen8, some stuff doesn't even work right on gen9.
Gen 8 started around 2013 and the production of the consoles has been stopped for several years now. The end of life for older hardware is inevitable, developers can't be stuck in the past. That said, it would be nice to see improvements for the current generation instead of timetable reductions. Optimization sucks even on PC.
Although I’m intending to replace/update my PC later this year, PC owners could still be in for a shock if they put out TSW6 with much higher hardware specs, as MS did going from FS20 to FS24. We suddenly find we need an I7 10700, a RTX2080 (or equivalent) and 32Gb of RAM. That would be a lot of current PC users, erm, stuffed.
I have upgraded to PS5 to have full experience whit all layers and contents, now the S bahn route have reduced timetable on gen9. Hope this Is the last route to have reduced timetable on gen9
With more and more detail going into routes, more and more detail and functionality going into trains, bigger and more complex timetables, everything is getting bigger. Packages when we launched TSW were in the order of a couple of gigabytes. Later ones are 20+ gig. That's not inefficiency, it's literally more stuff. Gen8 isn't finished, but if there are high end routes that we want to make that just won't run on a Gen8 console then you'll find those routes not coming for Gen8, the *majority* of players are on Gen9 or PC. That said, the *majority* of content should still run on Gen8. WCML and the Wagon - feels like adding a little wagon (and they really aren't big) shouldn't be a problem, right? At the time we planned n the schedule, the route wasn't very stable already - adding a wagon isn't just adding a wagon, it's adding more to the timetable as well, which will affect everyone who doesn't even own the wagon too and make a poor situation worse. I'm going to write something up about the memory situation for the community team perhaps to post up as a DTL article, it's really complicated to understand / explain. Matt.
Hi Matt, thanks for expain this thing, i have just one question as gen9 console player, we will see the full timetable on S bahn route at some point?
I have never understood why you would want to continue playing tsw on a console, that you have to play reduced timetables, put up with constant crashing and rely on the save feature to complete some service's?
Because we done want to spend hundreds of pounds on a PC, having already spent thousands on a console and loads of dlc already. Would you swap over to ps5 from pc? No.
I'm not on about switching from console to pc though. I mean gen 9 performs a lot better than gen 8, so why hold on to gen 8 and miss out?
Fair enough. There’s two sides to the argument, gen 9 is significantly more powerful than gen 8 and tsw could be so much better if it was only made for the newer machines, but if dtg aren’t going to bother to optimise the game to the point where the difference makes it worthwhile abandoning gen 8, then why bother scrapping the older machines
I can't guarantee that. But, it's definitely an aspiration. At this point, I don't know how we get there though so assume that it won't happen unless we come back and say otherwise. Memory tuning and investigation continues and will continue as there are many issues to resolve like blurring and such (which are themselves just a sign of memory getting close to exhaustion). If that gets to a point that it yields space to add more to sbahn, I would see us pushing forward on doing that on Series X and PS5. Matt.
Gen 8 consoles just don't have enough memory to run the current generation of routes. Although they are not holding back gen 9 or the pc, I would imagine dtg have to invest a lot more time trying to make routes work on gen 8. As the world moves forward and people switch to gen 9. Dtg must have looked at the sales figures and realised it's not worth the investment anymore.
Thanks for the info Matt. Have you considered the difficult option of actually not trying to cram more and more into a route, at least until next gen consoles come out? Personally, frame rate is king in a game of this type. TSW4 is the pinnacle of the game so far for me, and we got plenty of beautiful routes there so it's not impossible to get great looking trains & scenery along with super smooth graphics.
Pretty much what I said earlier today in this or another thread. The route builders whether in house or third party need to at least in part start thinking as we did with MSTS and TSC. Do you really need a field with high poly 3D crops 500m from the track. And the 3D modellers likewise need to be cutting down the polys, though not to the ridiculous extent of leaving the front off stations. Is using LiDAR terrain data really necessary particularly on flat routes where 20 or 30m SRTM could still provide an adequate mesh.
But then that would be a weaker system holding the game back, wouldn't it? Which, as has been repeatedly stressed, is the opposite of how DTG actually approaches development.
I understand the decision and have no hard feelings about it. There is an extensive backcatalogue of routes (including some real gems like SEHS Extended or DRA) which I will probably never fully exploit on PS4. Still, it would be nice if issues with older routes would be fixed so it is still worthwhile playing them.
By this time, 2025, DTG is one of the very few commercial publishers still releasing XB1 and PS4 versions of their games. Anyone who wants to play any major recent game, whether Baldur's Gate 3, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Indy and the Great Circle, Clair Obscur, Helldivers 2 etc etc etc, not to mention GTA 6, isn't going to be able to on an 8th-gen console; those versions don't exist. And before very long the 10th-gen consoles will be out, and there's no way DTG will continue to support 6 console versions on top of three for PC.
As someone who bought their PS5 for the exact purpose of taking advantage of TSW2, I hope this should mean improvements in other areas as resources can sent elsewhere. Gen 8 has been around for long enough. Even though my 8 year old PS4 still sees more use than my 5 year old PS5, and the PS4 had more free space despite having 18 games installed on compared to the 6 games on my PS5, although that’s probably more to do with modern games file size. Here’s to 11 years of the PS4.
Stop Making TSW 6 This year for PS4 and Xbox One, or You want Never get fixed this blurry and Memory leaks It’s time to pass this console
I would suggest that for anyone still on Gen 8, it's a good time to upgrade your console as Microsoft are looking into raising prices for Gen 9 Consoles.
Saying "looking into" is a bit misleading, it's not some suggestion that they may or may not act on, info comes from Xbox itself confirming that it's happening. They even have a big ol' support page with PDF's showing all the price changes in their various regions. https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/console/may-2025-pricing-updates
