Suggestion: Class 397 ‘Civity’ – TransPennine Express EMU for TSW5 Why This Train Should Be in TSW5 The Class 397 ‘Civity’ is one of the most modern intercity EMUs in the UK, operated by TransPennine Express (TPE) for high-speed services between Manchester, Preston, and Scotland. With its sleek design, fast acceleration, and advanced cab controls, it would bring something new and exciting to Train Sim World 5. Unlike most UK EMUs in TSW5, the Class 397 is built for express services rather than commuter travel. With a top speed of 125 mph (200 km/h) and no tilting mechanism (unlike the Class 390 Pendolino), it offers a completely different driving experience, making it a must-have for any modern UK route. Why the Class 397 Would Be a Great Addition Unique Gameplay Experience A true modern intercity EMU – Unlike the commuter EMUs in TSW5, the Class 397 is made for long-distance, high-speed services. No tilting mechanism – Unlike the Class 390, this train relies on standard suspension, which means handling curves at high speed feels different. Faster acceleration than older EMUs – Quicker than a Class 350 but more controlled than a Class 801. Perfect for High-Speed UK Routes 125 mph top speed – Perfect for running express services alongside other modern trains. Compatible with existing electrified routes – Can run on WCML, ECML, and SEHS (Scenario Planner). Operates in England and Scotland – Expands the variety of trains used on northern routes. High-Tech & Immersive Features Touchscreen Driver’s Cab – One of the most advanced cabs in the UK, offering interactive digital displays and controls. Regenerative Braking System – Feels different from traditional EMUs, requiring a different driving style. ETCS-Ready – Future-proofed for modern UK rail operations. Dynamic Passenger Information Screens – Real-time displays inside the train and on platforms. Would Improve Route Variety & AI Traffic Complements potential future routes – If DTG adds a WCML or Manchester-based route for example Manchester Airport Commuter which is coming to TSW5 , this train could be an add on for that route because the Class 397 runs on the Manchester Airport Commuter. Class 397 – Train Details Manufacturer: CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) Operator: TransPennine Express Year Built: 2019 Formation: 5/6-car sets Power Supply: 25kV AC Overhead Top Speed: 125 mph (200 km/h) Braking System: Regenerative & Electro-Pneumatic Safety Systems: AWS, TPWS, ETCS-ready Where It Runs – Potential Routes for TSW5 Real-Life Routes: Manchester Piccadilly – Edinburgh / Glasgow Manchester Airport Commuter Manchester Victoria – Carlisle How It Could Work in TSW5: ✅ Manchester Airport Commuter DLC – If WCML gets added, this is a must-have. ✅ AI Layers for TSW5 Edinburgh-Glasgow, Glossop Line and East Coast Main Line Route – Would make Manchester, Doncaster, Glasgow and Edinburgh stations feel more alive. Features That Would Make It Stand Out in TSW5 Fully Interactive Touchscreen Cab – Unlike anything currently in TSW5. Realistic Acceleration & Braking – Feels different from other UK high-speed trains. Authentic Sounds – From traction motor noise to door chimes and announcements. Detailed Passenger Interiors – Enhancing immersion, especially in free roam. ETCS-Ready – A step toward more advanced signaling in TSW5. Does TSW5 Need the Class 397? Absolutely! Adding the Class 397 would bring: ✔ A fresh, modern intercity train to the game. ✔ More variety for UK railfans. ✔ A new high-speed experience without tilt mechanics. ✔ More realistic AI services for modern electrified routes. Would like to see TPE feature - though my preference would be for a TPE 802 bundled with a route such as NCL -> YRK
i would like to see it but the only issue is that we only have Preston etc in the 80s, but it would work on the new manchester route as you said!
397s are only 5 coach trains. Real-life routes are Manchester Airport to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverly via Bolton, and Liverpool Lime Street to Glasgow Central via St Helens Central. As of the December timetable Change. The 397s are not used on the ECML. They have been down the line from Edinburgh to check gauging and platform clearances. However, this is far from normal procedure. They could also be used as scenery on Cathcart Circle.
Although LNER are ordering a revised design of the 397 to replace the IC225s An LNER version could always be an option.
