Gentle use of the throttle, plenty of sand and patience. It can take a while for brakes, couplings and tractive force to travel through a long, heavy train. Start with notch 3 or 4 and sand and wait. When you start to move, increase the throttle 1 notch at a time. It might take more than one attempt but don't be in too much of a hurry. If you have multiple locomotives, make sure they're all working together.
Apply the independent brake to hold the train. Release the train brake fully and wait for the brakes to release. Depending on the length of train this could take a while. Add some throttle (notch 5 for a US train) and then release the independent brake. Use sand if you need some more grip (shouldn’t be required unless it’s wet or snowy).
