Hi all, TSC has developed an issue all of a sudden, and I was just wondering if anyone has had/is having the same issue.......I have fired up Train SIM Classic earlier today to discover that I had no sound....at all. I thought that maybe it was a speaker issue, but know, every other game I try works, TSW4, Euro Truck Sim, etc. Does anybody know what the problem could be, and how to fix it please?

It's your rogue AV software, there's two threads on the Steam Forums. Avast has been reported as false flagging TSC and TSW.

Best to uninstall it and just use Windows Defender, which does the job perfectly.

These days there's no need for 3rd party AV scanners, but the industry still makes you believe you'd need them. In fact they're slowing your PC down and cause more trouble than they pretend to avoid.

    Thanks for your reply .

l do have Avast installed, so I will get rid of it. If it was false-flagging TS, would it not just stop it from running altogether, rather than just killing the sounds? Please excuse my ignorance, I'm not very clued-up with this kind of thing .

Just remove it, it's not worth the money. Use Windows Security and brain.exe :)

On the other hand, I do not (and never have) had Avast installed and yet I've also lost all sound in TSC as well... any better ideas?

Check if you have these OpenAL.dlls (compare size) in your RailWorks folder. These are the correct ones for TSC.

If not, do a Steam file verification.

Yes both are present. I've also just completed a Steam file verification which took ages but doesn't seem to have fixed it, that was my first port of call.

Edit: Just to check, the 32bit one is 409KB and the 64bit example 2087KB, does that sound right?

No. See screenshot. Both are roughly 2 MB.

So I just deleted OpenAL64.dll and did a file verification and Steam has replaced it with a file of the same size, 2087KB. (The 32bit version is now roughly 2MB as well.) There is still no in-game sound, have tested other games again which are fine.

Sorry, no idea. All other reports were related to AV software.

Ok - thank you for looking for me. Not sure where to go with this now, it worked perfectly fine until it didn't!

You mentioned you did not have Avast but do you have some other third party Virus protection like AVG?

I do have AVG and I've also discovered (thanks to your helpful suggestion elsewhere) that I can restore sound by playing/pausing a youtube video within Microsoft Edge and then loading TSC. Does this perhaps mean that AVG is at fault? I only have the free version.

    Hi all.
After completely uninstalling Avast, I have got the sounds back, so thank you to Spikee1975 for the suggestion. However, I am going to keep my guard up a little as others seem to be having the issue with no 3rd party anti-virus software installed, so I will play with baited breath!!
I may be revisiting this thread soon.

    Thanks all.

Quite possibly yes. I’ve seen both AVG and Avast reported as being a problem. Personally don’t understand why people use AVG Free version, it spends most of the time trying to get you to pay for it in my experience.

I just use Windows Defender these days and have never had an issue.

Have removed AVG (and made sure Windows Defender is fully 'armed') and TSC sound is restored, thank you folks!

I also have this problem but it's weird when I launch the game directly from Steam I have the problem but when I launch it via the RW Enhancer 2 launcher I have the sounds again so I wonder if it won't come not the latest major Windows 10 update

I don't have a surefire cure-all, but can suggest a possible workaround. Begin playing a YouTube video. Pause it, but do not end/close it. Launch TSC. You might find sound restored. It works for me, in any case.

Agreed, there is no need for 3rd party AV and no need for antimalware software. Having 2 or more AV softwares installed can trigger a false positive alert and slow the computer down more. Windows Defender gets the job done and a little power from the brain goes a long way.

It would be unwise to say to not use any kind of protection - but using Windows Security (Defender) is the best solution imho, that is the point.

It's a matter of trust - you are giving a 3rd party full access to your system. Whilst it is unavoidable to a certain extent using Windows, it does not mean you must give others than MS access.

And for Windows itself, I recommend googling for OO Software's ShutUp software. A small useful utility that lets you toggle Windows telemetry stuff, explaining every setting and making recommendations. It's not a runtime software like AV, but you start it, select your options and it writes them to the Registry, and close it. Fully reversible.

I'm using my Windows PC for gaming, and do all the rest on my second Linux PC (which is my old i7/GTX1050Ti rig), which holds personal data. I do not have an MS account nor used my real name for the Windows profile. (That's what's called using brain.exe :) )

I have been watching these discussions and while it is the personal "opinion" of a few here to only to run one particular product it is everyone's right to use the product of choice. The original topic was loss of sound and the cause was determined to be AVG/AVAST antivirus, the solution was to uninstall them. This solved the issue for many players. While I do appreciate your candor, other professionals have different opinions and must be considered in deciding what is best for each individual. I do agree that most "free" A/V tend to have trust and false positive issues ( to give the impression that they are working and are effective) and should be avoided. The question to ask yourself is why are they free? What are you giving in exchange for the use of the product? Before installing any software that protects your LAN, WAN, or operating system, they must be researched and vetted on it's effectiveness. Cost is not the measure of effectiveness.

Free AV software usually means that you're the unpaid beta testers.

The fact you personally don't know of anyone does not mean it is a bad idea.

Companies also need to protect their data from abuse by their own staff and "moles", which is a totally different matter than an end-user's PC.

My cousin works in Systems Integration in a big european company. For his own PC, he's only using Defender, a VPN and a good firewall (mostly because of telemetry, not because of malware)

And Windows comes with AV protection already, that's the point that's being made here.

You're free to use whatever program you like though :)
