It’s Friday and like almost every Friday, I’m receiving my usual Trainz newsletter and this time it was about a voice audition for a new competitor on the train simulation market on console: Trainz. I’m quite curious on what engine they’ll use and if like on TSW we’ll have the ability to walk freely and go in and out of locomotives and coaches, Trainz is not that good globally with train physics even though you can find some good exceptions but there’s one thing they’re good at it is their surveyor mode. I’m quite curious and excited to hear more about it in the near future.
Just got the same email myself. I haven't played a Trainz title for a long time but I remember that it was more like a model railway than an actual simulation. Maybe this will give DTG the kick up the bottom to improve the quality of TSW to a better standard.
WHAT?? That came out of nowhere, I'm excited though! Got sick of waiting for an update from SimRail on console release xd
It was never a competitor for RailWorks, being even older. Different target audience, different gameplay. But apparently a good editor to quickly build your own routes. Don't expect very true to life models or physics though, that was never Trainz' purpose. Maybe Surveyor will be a kick in the behind for DTG to finally wake up
i have been playing Trainz on PC they have a good amount of US and Canadian freight content esp engines and cars i like on trainz i can easily build my own train consists ive made a few long ones 150 cars and runs fine ..def looking fwd to see what they do with it on console im guessing they will prob do just ps5 x box series x 9th gen
Trainz is good for building routes or model type layouts but has never offered a great first person driving experience. No core despatcher/signaller which means you have to try and route your train as you go. No easy way to set up and run a player train to a timetable. Train physics are largely a joke. Vast library of freeware on the DLS, but much is aliased to ancient simplistic looking Auran cabs and the original default sounds from 2002. Many of the cab views impart a washed out appearance to the scenery due to the material properties of the glass. Some of the good stuff like the Settle & Carlisle or Potteries Loop Line got left behind at TANE after N3V cold shouldered the developers. A shame as the steam and diesel locos that accompanied those were amongst the best Trainz could offer and ironically way better than DTG’s lacklustre effort in TSW. Their business model now seems to largely revolve around getting people signed onto their subscription model, which is the only way you can get the latest updates or version of TRS2022. If you bought the outright edition direct or on Steam, that has been left behind. It will be interesting to see what the console version offers but I bet it won’t be cheap. And if experience with games like Cities Skylines on the console is anything to go by, trying to build a complex route or layout using a joypad is a non starter.
I play trainz and tsc more now since us freight in TSW is a fail now..there is things i like and dislike about trainz ..i dont like the fact that a lot of good free and paid content is not avail on steam or have to mess with files and assets kuids etc ..i do like that its easir to build a train consist easily and no limits on length can mix locomotive and they work cant do that in tsw consist editor some locos dont work or bugged in it..trainz you can have freight loads pick what containers you want when making a double stack train for example .lots of different commodities car types, in tsw they have no loaded freight cars just emptys to use in the editor..as far as level design route building i dont mess with it too complex i just let those who like and can build really good routes and if i like it ill buy or download ,
Definitely got potential to steal a more casual audience. Right now it’s almost impossible to say what audience exists on console, since their only real option is TSW.
I used to be a lot more involved with Trainz up until it became TANE. I was long term working on re-theming the old Highland Valley base route into a New England theme across various decades, as well as reskinning some locomotives. Once it changed over to TANE I lost interest as a lot of the older content I had was no longer compatible with the game and I moved on to TSC. I will echo what some others have mentioned on this thread, in that the "surveyor" route building tools are basically what makes the game. You can very easily make some amazing routes that are only limited by your own will and available time. Back in the day Trainz was my go-to world builder, while MSTS was what I sought after for an in-cab experience. I'm not entirely sure how well it will translate to console, but I don't see it being a threat to the driving experience DTG offers.
If the driving physic isn’t arcadish like the DCC mode then it might be interesting as personally I’m not that hyped anymore for SimRail, they said it’ll be on console for 2023 but yet nothing and we’re nearly in 2025. Aussies will be happy, they’ll be some routes from Australia, I mean it’ll be quite ironic for an Australian game company to not incorporate a line from their country. Beta for the game is open for XBox players, it appears that it’ll be for the 9th generation only and nothing for the PS5 (for the moment I guess): https://info.trainzsimulator.com/xb...-93229417&mc_cid=e3fd129836&mc_eid=8ee8a2509f
Depends if the devs choose to implement KBM support. Last I checked only around 200 games on Series X have full KBM support, ranging from big names like the MCC, CoD, and Gears, to indies like Dungeons of Hinterberg and Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator, with a similar number having limited support like TSW only offering keyboard shortcuts.
Great for you ! If you’re selected I hope you’ll be available quite often as they’ll require a lot of details. I was a beta tester for Trainz Simulator 3 on IPhone. It’s not hard, you just need to report every issues/problems you’ve encountered and above all, be very active.
It will arrive for Xbox. But I hope it will come for PS5 too. It seems it has in the console version an american 4 8 2, the BR 9F and Australian stuff including a steamer. Amd it brings a lot of hope for American freight fans.
Not really, only a GP38-2, a steam loco, and a Switcher, not even a mainline diesel locomotive, but at least they have a P42 with Superliners, so they are +1 to DTG in that regard.
Judging by that answer, I think it’ll come for XBox X/S as an exclusive first with the beta and final game and then, for the PS5, I’m sure more infos are to come:
They habe pictures on their homepage for the console version. And one of that looks like a CSX GP40. I think the console Edition will be like the TSW annual editions. And step by step they will port the current trainz content to the console version. What is probably much more easy, than build a game from scratch new like TSW.
At least Trainz console is getting US steam loco and Amtrak P42 superliners..out of the gate..TSW no US steam ppl have been begging for Amtrak P42 and equipment for US in TSW but they give excuses every reson heard why stuff cant be done for TSW ..Hopefully Trainz will give TSW a needed kick in the butt to get them moving to add that kind of stuff to TSW ..Some more competion for DTG may be whats needed to get them off their duffs ..not little blue kiddie choo choo s named thomas and friends ..
im looking fwd to trainz console ,im sure eventually more modern and older US Canada stuff will be added ..Also looking Fwd to the Australian content they have a nice variety of Australian diesels in PC version AC44ci Clyde engineering CLA CLF locos etc
I hope so too. If you look on the current content for Trainz on PC there is so much american freight stuff, that we don't have in TSW. For example SD60, SD70MAC, SD80, Dash 9 and so on. I hope it will be released all on consoles too.
Trainz on Consoles is good news for console players on TSW, because it will bring competition. So far DTG could say steam and american freight development is not economic enough for them. And they had not to fear economic consequences. Because console players with interest for that topics had no alternatives. They didnt had alternatives PC players had like TSC, Run 8 and Trainz. And I think the most income TSW earns with consoles. And the difference between Trainz and Simrail is, that Trainz has to port their current stuff for consoles only. Simrail has polish stuff so far only. Although they might be more realistic than TSW and Trainz, they have to do all new from scratch and that will need probably a decade.
