I cannot say why it is a toggle, but

at least on one DB loco, in passenger service, if you bang down the red EB button or yank the RED lever while you have throttle advanced and you had applied no train brakes, you will find that a train comes to a halt, but your brake levers are still sitting in place and not applied.

    move throttle to off
pop up the EB button or reset the red lever ( BR 101 )
    but
this should leave the psgr car/Wagon magnetic emerg brakes still applied.

toggle the Brake Release switch on the desk

    power can now be applied

In this sequence, you have used no non-EB brake levers.

After the TSW5 update this month, i will buy the Expert 101 and see how this works with various brake selections.

When i tried the Flix Train it was fine, but a second test to confirm that the Brake Release switch was indeed a necessary step, left the brakes locked on. Oy vey.

power may show as applied on a desk display while passenger wheels have magnetic brakes applied, but the train should not roll forward even on a grade down incline until those additional wagon emergency brakes have been released using the desk toggle. I must check if Steuerwagon have such a toggle switch ...

on the old BR101 doing IC out of Bremen, i did have to put the train brake to emerg to get the emerg lever to release. I was then able to confirm that the train was not moving under power until the brake release was toggled.
Perhaps it is a toggle to remind that no motion of the switch applies brakes as opposed to releasing brakes ?

Again on that BR 101, SIFA brake application could also be released by throttle Off and mere brake release switch toggling. Brake levers remained untouched. No nasty traction lock. I wonder again if this is also the simple case on the Expert 101. But i am waiting to hear about the update ...

With PZB down from Bremen, things got odd. First i blasted through a 120 restriction at 160 without a beep. When i did fail to ack the 1000Hz ballast above the Oldenburg 60 kph restriction, i did get brakes thrown on. Great. Now the oddity: i was braking, so throttle was off. Now brakes off. Toggled brake release switch towards me. Traction remained locked. Toggled it away from me. Traction ok. Was that a timed wait ( 30 sec.? ) for a PZB violation with nothing to do with the toggling ? I come out restricted to 45 as expected. But not a nasty traction lock.
One good thing: some locos go berserk if you accidentally toggle pzb off to on or set it On too late while rolling, On this old BR 101 i tried this toggle Off then On while running and it was very polite, merely showing i was free to release. But is that prototypical ? Are the other locos getting it right ?
I will start a run and turn PZB on once rolling ....

Oy. Thought my roll into Oldenburg station and my smooth stop was great ... a few meters left and a red signal ahead ... whole train in along the platform ... but TSW5 still required that i release brakes, apply throttle and creep up to that Zero on the HUD before doors would release !
As if we were in Japan on a very tight platform ! Why is that sometimes enforced ?!?
