Looking back at the preview stream for the WCML TSW5, It was mentioned that the audio team were unable to get actual running sounds (not their fault) which is ashame because the pendilinos sound brilliant at speed. It was also mentioned that the sounds regarding the traction motors were not sourced but really edited in which they sound not bad at all considering the circumstances. so it got me thinking, for the Running sounds for the 390, could they possibly use the Class 801/800 (forgot which one it is) Running sounds which are somewhat similar and like what they have done with the 390 traction sounds, manipulate/edit the sounds so that there is something there at least? How hard would it be considering the 801 already has some brilliant sounds? Still looking forward to the 390!
I highly doubt they will change or add any significant sounds to the 390 around this time, I personally don’t hear any similarities between the 80x and 390 so i don’t think that would help.
I mean running sounds would help if they are struggling no? Like i said, it’s better than nothing I guess.
The 801 sounds are very poor, hardly any traction sound in the cab at all. The one positive thing I took away from the WCMLS stream, was that whatever they used for the 390, at least there's a bit of electrothrash audible in the cab.
This is how a 390 sounds passing at speed through a station. What we got on the livestream wasn't this. So this is one reason among many I won't be purchasing it on day one. (Not my video)
I have an in cab Bluray of the 390 London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly and you can hear traction sounds in the cab as it pulls away, but they are not very loud. The sound of the traction slowly increases in pitch with speed up to 90mph. After which the track sounds take over which in the cab are a harsher, clunky and rumble more than in game, there is a whine coming from the transmission but not a lot at 125 mph, mainly track noise. It's disappointing that DT couldn't arrange a dedicated recording session with the TOC for this unit. That said, I'm unsure why one of the sound team members didn’t take a handheld recorder to a station to capture blowers, compressors, brakes, and other sounds, or use a contact mic to record traction motor sounds while riding as a passenger.
Yep, artistic license would be great in these circumstances. Not being able to appreciate the glorious sounds the trains makes whilst playing is very unfortunate. There is an argument against doing this with the need for realism, but a nice balance could be achieved. There could even be a toggle or fictional button in the cab to enable or deactivate motor sounds in the cab.
Absolutely they have done it with all the classic diesels, the 20, 31, 37, 40 etc. and most recently the JT Class 47 for BPO. And most glorious it is.
Probably because it's not as simple as that or the sounds are different both inside and outside the train in the compartment area and driving cab. They have to get very particular recordings so it also lines up with the physics and such
You know I always like the clag factor AP sometimes had in their EP’s which would increase the level of running/motor/engine noises in the cab. Something to ponder.
Rivet Games did such a fantastic job with the class 385 sounds, They didn't destroy anyone's hearing at all, or blow their speakers, I think we should let them mix something cool for the class 390 too. Because they might be sad from all the negative WCML feedback, so this would cheer them up a bit.
