so reading that tsw5 pc editor improvements post it mentions Fixes for landscape material usage so dose that mean we can drag and drop landscape material textures in to that landscaping texture box. cause when you do that the ground is black and not the texture you put on.
The ground being black is normal for ue, you have add the blend weights for the different materials for that to sort it self out. Landscape tutorial videos on YouTube should help there.
I can barely get my head around painting different materials onto the landscape. I still apply assets for trackside ballast using the same Loft tool as used in making platforms, which is a bit embarrassing to admit and doesn’t work at all well between tracks at different heights. My landscape material at the moment is only grass. Looking at some official routes they employ several layers in Landscape paint mode, which include dirt, ballast, grass, and many others. I’ve tried experimenting by selecting one of these layers and attempting to paint but got nowhere. I’m really hoping someone will make a tutorial on painting ballast etc when the TSW5 editor appears.
So painting a terrain is a normal UE thing so you should be able to find lots of tutorials on how to do that within UE 4.26 on youtube. FYI 4.26 is the UE version that the Public editor runs on.
Thanks for the reply. I did follow a couple of tutorials which got me as far as the default landscape on one tile being a very poor quality ballast which when painted gave a sickly green which wasn’t anywhere near as good as my existing grass material. I was left confused about how I might make my decent quality existing grass material the default layer with painting of ballast only when required. I’ll stick with the tutorials and hopefully it will click.

I made this tutorial quite a while ago. Not pro level and mostly using Unreal Sensei's technique, but it should teach you how you can set up your landscape material and use textures from DTG's DLCs to paint your landscape. I highly recommend to read it through another time, Jack. This at least gets you to the state of being able to paint different materials onto the landscape. Once you did that, its pretty much easy to choose the material of choice and apply it onto the ground. Hope it helps. However as far as I understand "Fixes for landscape material usage" for the upcoming Editor patch, this means in my opinion that we should be able to use the landscape material asset from a DTG route directly for our routes, which may lets you avoid the process of setting up your own landscape material (unless you're unhappy how DTG's landscape material is made and want to costumize it in your own way of course). Anyway, this would be a very cool improvement.
Thanks for the replies it’s much appreciated. I’ve toiled away all weekend and managed finally to paint some ballast alongside a few km of track. Among other things I was struggling to find a texture to suit the track in use but found a reasonable compromise. Had to stretch it considerably to match the size of the stones and tweak the overall colour a little. It looks like I can edit my landscape material to add layers/better textures etc at any time and it will still be applied to all the painting work done so far which is good. Robert I certainly hope we will soon be able to use the built in DTG route painting materials with the new editor, they look pretty comprehensive and must be better than anything I can lash together. I will be going over all the tutorials in the links provided to make sure I’m not building a whole lot of trouble for later.
I've been trying to assign some of the DTG route landscape materials to my own route but they still don't appear to be working as I would expect then to in the TSW5 editor.
