Was really gutted to go pre order tsw5 and notice there is no physical release, I checked in the tsw5 faq's which says something along the lines of no news for a boxed version yet.

I'm basically wondering if there is any other info on it, and if we will definitely get a boxed version as that is what I always buy, kind of collect physical copies of games.

Any reply would be greatly appreciated

I believe they said they may release a physical copy at some point, but as of now it has a unconfirmed release date.

Although if it's just a collectors item, there would be no harm in buying a digital version if you wanted to play the game sooner and then buy a physical copy of the game later on down the line that is for collection purposes only?

It'll probably be out in a few months, that's usually the case. Maybe in time for Christmas.

Kinda pointless having a physical release of TSW5.

You'll just get a disc full of bugs, that will be outdated as soon as the next patch comes... which DTG drop every other week.

Physical games are just drinks coasters in 2024.

Hehehe or you get a box with only a paper with a Steamcode and you paid 15€ more for only the box xD

Although I haven't bought a physical copy of anything in many years, I cant blame people for wanting to actually own something, instead of just the computer saying you "own" said thing and it being able to be taken away at any time.
Like if I ever lost my steam account for whatever reason it would be so over, I have so much stuff on there, it's almost scary.

But if I’m not mistaken, when you purchase a physical copy of a game, does it not then redirect you to Steam or whatever platform to activate the license key during install - thus making the physical copy actually useless as the key cannot be activated more than once, and the end result is still the same - the game being tied to your account?

It’s only really console physical copies of games that are still, to be blunt, useful - unless you are buying a physical copy of a really old PC game from the early 2000s that requires the disc to be in while playing

Even that isn't nessicarily true, many of those old games used Safedisc, which was dropped when Windows 10 launched. Also many of those games used activation servers, many of which don't exist anymore. So a lot of old games won't work without a cracked .exe files that have been modified to to remove said copy protection.

Wasn't that already dropped in Win7?

It was still possible, but you had to start the service manually by "sc start secdrv" admin command iirc.

If I remember correctly it was actually removed sometime after Windows 10 came out in a security update. But Windows 7 did originally have Safedisc pre-Windows 10 I believe. I know certainly that a number of flight sim addons and games I had worked just fine on 7, but needed work arounds on Windows 10/11 to work, and I know for fact it was due to Safedisc.

I am no financial expert, but it seems like a waste of development costs to go physical in 2024.

DTG have to pay for the boxes and discs, pay for shipping the game to stores, and then giving individual stores a cut of each game sold.

Will TSW5 sell enough physical copies to make a profit or even break even on what the physical edition is costing to manufacture and ship? .... Unless DTG have a deal with GameStop, Amazon, or some other large retailer.

Oh, and the PS5 Pro doesn't even have a disc slot.

It has but sold differently but it’s hard to find a disc drive as scalpers took a lot of them.
