The Tyne & Wear metro would be a good addition to tsw as a blend of classic suburban running and a tight metro timetable. It offers a new operator and unique train and possible room for expansion. Route length: 21.4 Miles Stations: 31 Major calling points: Airport, Central Station, Stadium of Light, Sunderland and South Hylton Train: Class 994 Metrocar Potential future train: Class 555 Base layer: Green line, between South Gosforth - Pelaw Yellow line services to increase playable services Points of interest/ unique qualities: The railway is run in kph, Jesmond - Central Station stations are underground, many level crossings, Visible Sunderland AFC stadium (Stadium of Light), Sharing track with Network rail between Pelaw - Sunderland. Use of PZB (nowhere else in the uk).
Fantastic idea this is impressive nothing wrong with standard routes but this would certainly be something different but interesting and intriguing definitely a golden buzzer moment
Yes. I would definitely like this (even though I live the other end of the country, I’ve used the Metro many times). Just as long as it’s the complete thing, not just one line.
Nice, though in truth my age (!) recalls the old Tyneside diesel network pre Metro than what came after, having moved away from the area in 1971.
Excellent idea overall. One more thing it has unlike existing Network Rail British routes TVL Woodhead line Manchester Piccadilly to Glossop and Hadfield Birmingham Cross City Line Brighton Main Line ECML York Doncaster Peterborough due to the PZB system making it the only British route to be played like a German and Austrian route.
Prety sure it doesn't. Think he means approach control. Correct me if I'm wrong. Pzb is a European/German thing.
Great Suggestion. I wonder whether in terms of route length it would be possible to also get the yellow line. Be nice to see some LNER 800 layers at Sunderland and through that section of the line, potentially also northern sprinters.
PZB is used on the Tyne and Wear metro, and it is the only place in the UK to use it. Overall, a good suggestion, but my biases would lean towards the yellow line because of the coast and the historic stations, eg Whitley Bay.
definitely not realistic for both in one go, they are both pretty long, Central to Park Lane takes about 40 minutes or something alone. I think the yellow line fully takes over an hour. That’s before mentioning 60 pretty unique stations on the route. personally I’ve been on sections Park Lane to Longbenton and Monument to Tynemouth to what my memory remembers. hard to see on the map at least to me anyways but monument has four directions to go in, I always thought originally that’s not very clear on the main map.
Further to this - it would be nice to see/hear aircraft at the NCL airport station. Perhaps there could be some scenarios too - like for example, Newcastle airport is closed. Pick up stranded passengers and bring them to Newcastle central for connections to Manchester airport.
Tees valley was a good route but nothing since then unfortunately, as someone from the area aswell the nostalgia and real connection to make is here for me.
