I've noticed that since the UE 4.26 upgrade, the shadows now look a lot darker and more defined.

I'm not complaining one bit as I'm loving the contrast between dark and light. Before it all looked a bit 'flat' looking. I also got an FPS boost as well.

Bear in mind I'm using r.SkylightIntensityMultiplier=0.5 ini mod, however even before it wasn't this good looking with it enabled.

The route is Glasgow Cathcart Circle, 09:30, June with light clouds.

I think it's a matter of personal taste. Personally, I don't like how dark those shadows look because shadows do not contrast that deeply in real life. In your screenshots, it is difficult to make out detail in the shaded areas. It is not really so with real sun-cast shadows.

Could be monitor settings. They do look dark but then I guess at different times of year on a sunny day they might have more or less contrast perhaps

Yes i noticed that too! The game is too dark now for my monitor settings. I cannot see much, even in daylight. It makes my eye strain. Too bad there isnt a brightness/gamma settings inside the game. londonmidland any engine.ini tweak for brightness?

Hooray! I thought it might be me! I too, have noticed that the game is darker now, especially from the cab, it's as if they've been fitted with tinted windows...

r.SkylightIntensityMultiplier=1 is the usual value for brightness. The higher the number, the brighter things will look. Unfortunately this has a side effect as it makes TSW’s completely broken night lighting even worse at night, as certain things will look even brighter at night.
