Apologies if this is a dumb question but at some point long ago (like years ago and I don't remember doing it) I got Train Simulator (it's in my steam) it only had Castle Rock and some other UP route (not really into non North American stuff). It says I have train simulator 2022 now after I opened the game out of curiousity but I never purchased it. Do I just buy newer routes independently? Will they work? Do I need to buy versions in between? I tried searching for say Train Simulator 2019 and it showed up for a second then directed me to 2022. Steam says 2022 is already in my library even though I haven't purchased TS for years. Could someone please explain to me how this works?

I've bounced back and forth between Reddit, Steam and here and searched all over I could figure it out myself but I just don't get it.

Each year the core of the game gets updated for all users but the routes featured in the current years version do not get included. To get the routes you can either buy the current year version (TS22) or buy each of the routes individually (you can also buy previous years versions from places like Humble Bundle or key sites to get other routes that had been included in previous years).
Previous years versions (ie TS2020, TS2019 etc) won't appear on Steam as they get replaced each year.
