To all of my D&D and other TTRPG players on here, can anyone suggest a decent virtual table top for PC? Our regular DM uses a program that's exclusive to her iPad that she runs our in-person games on via screen-sharing to the TV, but I'll be running games on my Windows laptop and will need something different. It will be my first time DM'ing, and I'll be running a SW5e (Star Wars-themed) campaign based off my own story line. The campaign will take place in the real early rise of the Empire period (think Rebels, Andor, Kenobi, Solo) and my character, a Chiss pirate, will hire my players' characters for various acts of scum and villainy while dodging Imperial forces and the major crime syndicates. I don't need anything crazy, mostly battle maps where I can display player tokens and show on-screen enemies and NPC's. It will all be played locally and screen-shared on a TV, no online play. I don't need on-screen dice rolling or intricate animations. Any thoughts? dtg_jan DTG Harry do you have any recommendations?
Hey there, There are quite a lot of VTTs out there, but one of the longest running ones is Roll20, which is free to sign up and use. It is a bit basic and can look quite outdated, but if all you need is a blank gridmap, drawing functionalities, a dice roller and VoIP chat it has you covered. I've been using it for years and it offers a premium model as well as a market place, where you can buy official conversions for Roll20 directly. If you are looking for a good starting point, Roll20 is your best shot. I don't have much experience with the following services, just wanted to sum them up for you: Foundry: Probably the largest paid for program with lots of official content TaleSpire: System agnostic, this definitely looks the best out of all of them. Tabletop Simulator: While technically not made for TTRPGs specifically, it definitely works. I hope this helps. All the best, Jan
Thanks Jan! I'll give them a look; I'm at the point where I'm writing our first session and I'd like to have some visual maps to help me set the scene. I'm finding it difficult not going overboard and creating a huge environment all at once. My DM has suggested I try doing a one-off with her as a set-up to the campaign to see how I like running a session. I might break out some grid paper and my old Star Wars Micro Machines for tokens and just run an old fashion game with physical figures. I've been spoiled, I've only ever played D&D on a VTT lol.
I ended up going with Roll20, and so far I'm pretty happy with it. I've been able to come up with some basic maps, and even purchased some of the Star Wars assets on their marketplace which has been a huge help. I've also used some assets linked in the SWRPG Community website, another handy tool. It's been a little bit of a learning curve, their How-To series on YouTube has been helpful. I know one thing, I've gained a whole new appreciation for DM's as I've started the process of crafting my own campaign lol.
