Isn't that technically impossible? I might be talking nonsense but I think I read somewhere that MK3 coaches can't travel on tracks where a 3rd rail is present (in real life).

It was a little Easter egg as there were times in the past that GWR HSTs ran into Waterloo due to engineering works

IIRC had to be fitted with short swing links on the bogies. HST's have run to Waterloo when Paddington was closed for major engineering works back when they worked the Inter City services.

HSTs running over third rail was common going all the way back to Intercity days, many MKIII carriages were fitted with short swing links enabling them to run over third rail.

It has been in that route for a long time. Pops up once a day in each direction. Represented a brief period when Paddington was closed and some HST sets ran into Waterloo.
I was hoping when the last round of Paddington closures was announced GWR would use Paddington again, but they decided to use Euston only.

What is a "Short swing link" and how does it change them, (Without it what would happen if it was on 3rd rail track)?
