As in the title - the "Railfan" type scenarios - where you watch AI trains go by from a vantage point beside the tracks, and which are standard on virtually all Steam-exclusive routes, what route were they introduced with? The original North Wales Coastal possibly?

  2. Been present for as long as I can remember. 10 years or more.

The North London Line and Riviera in the 50's seems to be the first routes with Railfan Scenarios
Their route numbers end in 2015 - routes ending with an earlier number, like ECML-South, don't have the Railfan

    Wasn't TS2016 the one with the whole " #wearerailfans " marketing campaign?

Would make sense with what Peter said then as TS2016 was released in the last quarter of 2015 (the next TS year title has always released the end of the year before hasn't it?)

Looks like you are correct: Train Simulator Classic – Train Simulator 2016 is available now on Steam! – Steam-nyheter (steampowered.com)
Relevant quote: "Plus, with Train Simulator 2016, get started on your driver career at the TS Academy and master your machines with support from the new Driver Assists system - you can also capture the perfect scene in the all new Railfan mode."

The bundled routes are given as Sherman Hill, Riviera Line in the 50s, West Rhine: Köln to Koblenz and Norfolk Southern Coal District, so your assumption would likely be correct.
