as someone who recently got more into the fascinating world of European trains and transit systems why is it always us, uk and Germany? to me the formal should be changed to North America, Europe and a possible mix of Australian and Asia's routes, it is train sim world not train sim us,uk and Germany, not saying we dont get routes from other countries but in the base train sim world game we have only gotten one Canada route, 1 France route and 1 swiss routes . wouldn't it be more fun for the player to experience a mix of all three? from long distance freight or us commuter or Amtrak mid-distance routes. and then to the extension collection of TGV, Eurostar and other high speed carriers to smaller routes like Germany narrow gauge steam and Sweden own high speed train that was tested on the NEC. even to the east for routes in japan like JR Narita express, tokyo loop lines or even the shinkansen or other lines in Taiwan or south Korea to freight trains through the outback and lines like the Sydney metro and the overnight XPT. the world is filled with amazing routes and i feel like the formal they use now is just an excuse to reuse assets rather than make a game worthy of "world" in the title, steam coming around the bend and i hope that lets us see some more interesting routes that might not been in the pervious game, even more with the smaller scope of routes. i would love to see a 1.1 Strasburg route and i think most people would pay 20$ for that.
ps. xbox players want sales too! i been wanting to get the Canadian route for awhile but paying near full price for a train sim world original dlc seems a bit steep, maybe lower the prices for the original routes?

Because that’s what DTG know how to do. They know how the signalling works, have assets for scenery in those countries, etc. Any new country requires a significant upfront effort to learn those things and build the assets for it.

As often discussed by Matt, “world” in the title refers to the world of trains - it’s all about trains and you can walk around etc. It does not refer to worldwide or from around the world.

OBB is easy for DTG to expand same Signals and PZB LZB Sifa 15KV AC. IC87 Stuttgart Singen Zurich has OBB1116/1016 to Singen where SBB RE421 brings IC87 to Zurich HB from Singen. IF DTG makes an OBB Vbf like Wien Kledering part of the Yard will have a DB BR363 G6 204 DBB 212 which OBB classifies as 2048 alongside the 1064

"Even"? No self-respecting train simulator should do without Japanese content if it has resources not to. It's like making a FIFA game and having clubs from Italy and Spain but not England available.

More directly to the OP's question: I personally said over the past two years that under the pandemic situation it was understandable that it was next to impossible for DtG to travel to places like Japan and do everything they need to collect all the data and get licenses for routes from there. Now that the pandemic is nearing its end in most places, we will see if that was the actual reason, and if the devs - whether DtG or third party - make that effort. They have said on forums and streams that they would like to explore the option of adding routes from Japan.

A lovely scenic Japanese route or maybe a section of the Shinkansen would be great and DTG need to start actively looking outside their safety bubble. There is a master list of Japanese wish list routes which I won’t repeat here, but a good start would be that Forest Rail from TSC.

Probably worth pointing out that DTG is a UK developer too, so they're going to know a lot more about our train lines here in the UK, as well as have a lot more easy access to routes, documentation and physical access to services and rolling stock. Same goes for European countries closer to the UK. They may just want to develop these lines because they are staring at these lines out the windows all day!

I'm only interested in UK trains and UK routes so basically your suggestion would take away from the experience for me. I have literally stopped watching anything other than roadmap streams from DTG because there's nothing of interest to me.
Whilst I know people want more routes from more places I would raise that if they can't get the systems to work properly in the UK, where they're based and where they know the systems best, how could they get a decent Japan or South African route to work properly?

My preferred "option" on this would be that a local developer to those places develop those routes and assets. That we we get access to those countries from people who know the systems, can get the reference material etc etc

DTG just aren't a big enough company to produce assets and systems from all over the world

Indeed. One would hope Union Workshop are being nurtured to do something for TSW.

But I think DTG should do much more effort to get 'local" devs aboard. Now it's like "if you are interested, contact us". They should be contacting developers to come and work for them. Someone on the forum introduced me to a Japanese game called Densha de GO or something. I was so surprised to see the gameplay of the game and how it looked in general. Sure this game is from Square Enix so it will be rather difficult to get that team interested to work for DTG. But maybe some devs have left the company and do their own thing but I don't see them applying to make a rout for TSW2 just because Matt asked it in a stream. DTG should do more headhunting in a country like Japan. Lots to benefit for DTG as well because I think the can learn a thing or two from Japanese dev's

Why DTG? Why not the users or the companies at the "other end"?
Lumping it all on DTG makes DTG responsible in the end, and that just causes issues.
If someone wants a Japanese route and can find a Japanese UE software house then why not contact THEM rather than DTG?

Because DTG is a company?! If I ask my bakery for raisin bread he doesn't send me on a search for a grapevine. He will look were to get raisins to make me raisin bread. I don't understand this culture where a company should not be responsible for the content they release?

If I go to a bakery and they don't do raisin bread surely it would also be possible for them to point you to someone else local who does

And the whole point is that DTG do not release third party content, the third party does, hence them being responsible. If you put a third party radio in your car you don't go back to the dealer if the aerial needs replacing...

But that's just pointing me to another bakery. Wouldn't be a very smart bakery :D

Who's talking about third party content? Get new talent in house where DTG can benefit from. TSW2 is the first game I have came across that says to consumers "need content? Go search for a developer that will build it for you".

I would say it's an excellent bit of commercialism. "I don't know how to make something, but I'll do a half baked job of it because you've asked and I want your money" doesn't sound like anyone I would want to buy off

And DTG are UK based. Why would they have any expertise in Japanese or Australian content? They can't even build Gillingham right and that's a mile from their HQ!

To be honest the train community is the first I've ever known to want people with no knowledge or experience of something to get on and build it. It's like going back to your baker and asking them to fillet a cow. They work in food but not that food!

I don't understand a thing what you are talking about. Why are you talking about a half baked job? Densha de Go is in my opinion a superior game to TSW2 gameplay wise. DTG is in superior in other ways. I'm not talking about a half baked job. I'm talking taking to a higher lever with much more experience in house than they do already.

A bakery that can't bake a raisin bread shouldn't call themselves a bakery. Raisin bread is a basic.

What you seem to have been saying in this thread is that DTG need to go to Japan and find someone who worked on Densha De Go and persuade them to come and work for DTG so that we can then get lots of great quality Japanese content for TSW. Imagine your raisin bread is not raisin bread but a speciality bread made only by a handful of people in Japan who know the secret recipe, where to source the rare ingredients and know all the intricacies of the ancient baking method required to make it without it poisoning the person eating it. Now go and ask your local baker to track one of the people down and get them to work in their shop in your small town so you can try that bread. That’s a better analogy for what you are suggesting DTG to do. It’s not going to happen.

I think those of us in countries that aren't represented in TSW have to make our peace that we won't see much in the way of representation in-game. In addition to what's there now, I suppose we might eventually also see Austria and Japan but beyond that it's hard to see much being added. I get it, I know Dovetail don't ignore Poland or Czech cos they don't like us, there just isn't scope or expertise to expand in our direction.

Japan is definitely not happening, at least not from DTG. Especially since I doubt DTG can acquire a license from any of the railway companies in Japan (Since DTG wont do unbranded content for TSW2.)

Correct and it has to do with their strict licensing Rules. On the other hand Austrian Routes will be easy for DTG due to PZB & Sifa being used by OBB since 1963 LZB 1987 on the Westbahn.
Late Night services on Main Spessart Bahn SKA Munchen Augsburg are OBB 1116/1016 Nightjet Trips HRR RRO IC118 Dortmund-Innsbruck Hbf HMA Railjet. Riesa-Dresden Railjet 256 Vindobona OBB1216. Selected Dosto services have a chance of OBB Taurus running it. Freight alternates with 1293 Vectron Taurus 1016 1116 1216 Taurus. Shunters 2048 which is a DBB V100 the West German version of the DR V100 DB BR204 from Main Spessart Bahn 2070. Electric 1163 1063 363 type couplers 1064.

If you want a game with a Japanese commuter train to drive there is one available but be forwarned it's very very very limited in it's train selection route selection but the upside is no redlights to worry about and no other trains to clog up the line plus you will never see a single ai passenger doing anything ridiculous because there are none to begin with.Theres no schedule to get behind on because there's only one station.Heck even the crossing gates work correctly. You can ride the train or sit in the driver seat and watch the route as you go and you can also drive the train. This is train sim action at it's finest and there a bonus 7 part side adventure to boot.

You brought up raisin bread, and the correlation would be a bakery that doesn't do that (what you call staple, but not true in the UK where DTG are based)
I was going to use a different UK word in place of baked but it would get the post banned and half baked (a UK term for something done but not done well) kind of fits.

In other words DTG don't know japanese railways as well as someone from Japan would so why not get someone from Japan to do it rather than banging on at DTG to do things they obviously cannot properly do

I don't think anyone can at this point say that routes from X country are "definitely not happening", even from DtG. If DtG can travel to country Y and get data and licences, they can do the same in country Z. I haven't seen any specific evidence or reason from anyone that would show the devs can't get licences from Japanese companies, especially considering that there are different companies with different licensing requirements there, meaning different options for game developers. Can't afford a licence from the Big Seven? There are companies serving local routes, short tram-like train routes, urban routes, etc that are not JR. There is also the option of making a historical route from before the privatisation - terms for licencing those would probably be different from ones for making a contemporary JR route.

Ultimately what we say in threads like this is all just speculation. We only know that 1) Japan is the most requested new country addition in the playerbase: https://forums.dovetailgames.com/threads/what-new-country-you-want-to-see-next-in-tsw2.35453/ and 2) DtG have repeatedly said they would like to explore the option of adding Japan at some point.

What would be helpful from DtG is for them to clarify whether they have the resources to be able to do licencing and data collection from companies in places like Japan if they decided to recreate those routes, or whether they would be dependent on third-party devs for this. That would instantly help in creating healthy expectations in the community based on us all being informed, instead of having the vague possibility of these routes happening sometime dangled in front of us from one year to the next.

Isn't that how we have become this "great" civilisation? By looking for the things we can't find in our neighbourhood somewhere else? You make it sound like we would still do this with a wooden boat and the chance of the DTG member exploring the world for talent might not return because we don't know what is on the other side of the ocean.

I'm using raisin bread as analogy because there is a need for other routes than US,UK,GER. If I was the only one who wants a Japanese route your analogy would fit. If a huge part of my town wants raisin bread made with a special ingredient and recipe, he better go find it because in my imaginary town we carry pitchforks :D

More like finding a needle in a haystack than an undiscovered continent though. I do like the image of Matt rowing across the seas looking for train sim devs though, that made me chuckle.

I don't think an analogy is needed quite honestly. For me it feels like a UK developer, developing UK routes is to be expected. Sure we can all want them to do more, and there are many routes worldwide I'd want them to do. Heck, there are countless UK routes I'd want them to do. But they're a commercial enterprise, offering purchases of their product that happens to be set in their country.

Take Fallout for example. I love the game with a passion. It's developed by Bethesda, who are (unsurprisingly; given their name) based in Maryland, USA. They then released Fallout 3 set in Washington DC. Which is hardly surprising given the distance to their office. Would I love to see a UK set Fallout title? Absolutely! Will it happen? Very unlikely, and even then, it'll be London.

The good news is, that unlike Fallout (where a significant amount of copyright law is involved) - another company is free to create "US Rail Sim 2022" and develop as many routes as they want across the USA. Similarly, any other developer or company can come along and develop "World Train Sim 2022". We can all hope and dream, but I don't think Bethesda are under any obligation to develop their next title in any country I desire, just as much as DTG are to develop content outside of their 'bubble'.

That comparison is not relevant at all: 1) Fallout is a fictional game with a fictional setting, whereas simulators have real-world locations to replicate from around the world, and 2) There already are routes in TSW2 that are located outside the UK.

That's exactly the problem! They took the copyright for Train Sim World. You could theoretically still call it "Train Sim World with more than just 3 countries" But not sure it's a title that would stick. ;)

Look Japanese companies put high value on there reputation products or services and most of all honor,if someone disrespect the company it makes the whole company potentially look bad or possibly shamed. So with the history of DTG(TSW2)and there 3rd parties having a continually releasing of one broken dlc after another and then trying to fix said dlc while still braking things that may not have already been broken in the first place. How do we know they haven't already asked and been turned down many times. If i owned a Japanese rail company i would be terrified at the very thought of what kind of broken mess dtg might end up trying to release representating my rail company.

But you already have several Japanese routes in a DTG product - TS Classic, albeit made by a third party.
If Union Workshop made a TSW Japanese route I would buy on Day 1.

That’s all unbranded though as far as I know, right? If so, that’s already a no from DTG. They’ve been rather clear about only having licensed stuff in TSW. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see something from Japan but it seems very unlikely to me.

The UK, The US and Germany are where Dovetail are (clearly) comfortable in developing, they have many scenery assets and trains for them (Germany in parcticular), and it's where they have the recourses to consistently provide for.

Countries such as Austria will likely end up appearing, but more or less falling under the German bracket, due to their similarities and interlinked natures.

Japan, China - anything on Asia will likely depend upon any third parties like Union Workshop stepping in and covering it. In fact, any country outwith Germany, France, Britain, Canada and the US are likely to have such a reliance. Look at Switzerland, it has 2 routes (the most outwith US/UK/DE) and both are Rivet products. Perhaps Just Trains could venture into the Asian market, as they did in TS (iirc).

Also, I find it interesting that the whole "Train Sim World with only three countries" arguement still comes up, considering it's been said time and time again that that's not what the "world" part means.

Maybe the games title needs a update (Yea i know that both a curse and a blessing at this point)...But since TSW2 focuses on the UK, US,GER with additional countries being slowly added it should be re branded as " TRAIN SIM WORLD (with the tag line underneath being) "MORE OR LESS" ).Meaning the game more or less 3 main counties plus random extra counties when someone feels like adding them.

Ok fine,i have a backup title that will be perfectly fitting and explain this game in the shortest fewest words possible..."insert drum roll sound effects here"...."TRAIN SIM WORLD 3+".

Note it sad that the people who play this game care more about it's success then the ones who are making it.Just think how great it would be if WE all cared equally together.

Then we wouldn't have a game.

You comment seems to be based on the premise that DTG having less money means they would produce a better product.
More likely they would stop producing the product (and fire everyone)

Well wouldn't they be swimming in money if they just put a little extra effort in pre release testing, and fixing?Btw why should any business that releases semi problematic products expect to be fully financially supported by a costumer base unless they show continuing efforts to improve there future products quality with each release cycle(dlc)...I don't want DTG to fail but that doesn't mean we should just have to be satisfied with the status quo dlc release issues.

Union Workshop has been calling itself a TS and TSW addon developer for quite some time. So far, however, there is no TSW content to be seen.

    upload_2022-4-24_20-41-26.png

Unlike TS, DTG has built TSW as a closed system and acts as a publisher of third-party TSW content. None of these external developers can publish content without DTG. Thus, I also see them as the contact for such issues.

Am I getting my hopes up for other regions in TSW? No. With the above closed system (and thus conditions) of TSW, no. You can see how little interest there is with external developers since TSW is out and I don't see any improvement there. The known developers of TS addons either continue with TS or switch to other games like Trainz.

I have been more selective with my purchases recently, but I do actually really enjoy playing TSW for all its warts and wrinkles. I will almost certainly get SoS on Day 1 and some of the other recent releases - Sursee, HSC, Harlem plus maybe a few of the older routes I tried and refunded or never got round to purchasing if there's a decent sale at some point.

    Train - Trains
    Sim - Short for Simulator
World - The ability to walk around and interact with the railway, stations and trains.

There is no need to even thing about changing the name. In this context, and I'll be clear:

World = Routes across the Earth
    Instead,
World = The Ability to interact with the World of the Railway.

You're really just playing a broken record with this arguement of "Train Sim 'World' but only three countries"

    • I don't think they'd be "swimming" any more or less than now. Maybe they'd have a few more people who would play past 1000 hours, but I doubt it would be a lot (as in millions)
    • "expect to be financially supported" probably isn't right. I have no doubt that someone somewhere is sitting down with a spreadsheet and working out just how many dev hours will produce enough of a pay back to cover costs plus profit and then they work to that. DTG could put all the hours under the sun into dev and still not get it right for everyone
    • Nobody's saying "be satisfied", but nor would more dev necessarily mean more income.

Not really. Maik Goltz moved to TSW. Same goes for JT, Rivet, Skyhook. Also Matthias Gose from 3DZug cooperates with TSG. As far as I know, 3DZug makes the 3D model and Maik is the one who makes it drivable. At least for the 232.
I am pretty sure AP also has some kind of interest in TSW, as AP also helped with some sounds etc.
And Lukas and Ed, who built S-Bahn Frankfurt do work as 2np party for DTG and also confirmed a 3rd party route, that is made by them.

So all in all - the known developers of TS move to TSW. At least some of them.

I would say that they ALSO develop for TSW rather than moving to it. AP definitely are still producing for TSC as are the others.

you're right! Rivet and Skyhook to still produce for TS. I think it's some kind of transition period, until the 3rd party is capable to produce good TSW content in a working time frame.
I also think "backfitting" TSW content for TS isn't that hard. I mean Skyhooks 187 has also been published for ts

I don't think it's that at all, companies will produce for whatever software market they wish and I don't see any reason why they'd stop producing for TSC which still has decent sales (especially 3rd party)
