Just curious haven't touched TSW since the 3rd game and seen a friend playing it and noticed the Newish updates and asked the question if anyone can please explain why TSW is called that. It's clearly Not a World Sim as New Zealand railway isn't in game or Australia railroad nor is South American rail lines as well as Mexico, Alaska Railway ect. Second why hasn't the name been changed to (Train Sim Passenger World) as it's Clearly known DTG cares more about Passenger trains than Freight as it shows when they make special trips to the US to get footage or sounds on MBTA and other Passenger train's instead of Freight which is everywhere not to mention Railroad Tourist lines allow people to climb onboard these locomotives or cars which makes for easy access but DTG never does it. I believe if DTG would just come out and say TSW is going full passenger mode and No longer Freight more people would be happy. But I also believe that Freight is there so DTG can pull more players in $$$ by saying there's Freight in our game but will never build it better than what it is for Freight. But spend that money on Passenger service they will. The Only down fall with going down that road is there will be at some point a sudden stop which is where DTG will run out of Passenger service Routes and Locomotives for the American side as there isn't a lot of different in service anymore. And given there are No American Steam Engines in game that's another problem. Am-Trak from the 70's to the 90's only had 4 different kinds of units produced overall, yes, I know there is a lot more but basic model design talking. The other smaller short line Passengers services weren't around so that's a bad thing in the long run. What to do is the last question at hand. Now if DTG comes over to US to do research on older Passenger units watch how fast they will lose their Freight players. What are your thoughts on DTG going all Passenger and Cutting out Freight? I honestly could care less, what anyone says because I don't play this game anymore but was only Curious as I said, if I get an answer cool if not No biggie.
It's been said several times on streams and on here, it's called train sim world, because you can get out the cab and explore the game world.
It was a bit of a misnomer really. I think they were keen to differentiate from TSC but in the process gave false hope they would be covering a vast range of countries around the globe. Well at least we now have something from Austria and Holland is coming. However it will be a long time (if ever) before we see the Peruvian Central with the zigzags, Darjeeling Himalayan, Sydney Suburban, Arthur’s Pass in New Zealand or even something in the Czech Republic.
It also helps to keep doors open. Although freight isn't on the roadmap, I guess DTG don't want to rule it out entirely. Same goes for all the other countries. We've got Austria, now we're getting The Netherlands. Maybe we'll get more soon!
There are 195 countries in the World. You can’t represent them all. They are introducing more (e.g. Austria and Japan is coming) but it is impossible to have anything like all the countries with railways. They have to concentrate mainly on those that are likely to sell well.
I'm not going to engage with the rest of this post because it's a rant, but I'll answer this part: The "World" is the world around you. Trains, Passengers, Stations, Yards, etc. Unlike TSC, you can walk around and interact with that. It doesn't mean world in terms of locations; anyone who sees the name and buys TSW expecting routes across every corner of the planet is either a child or shouldn't be in charge of their own finances. Besides, the "World" part is technically fulfilled anyway. There are routes (incl. Roadmap) in the Western and Eastern hemispheres, as far west as California and as far east as Japan; with multiple countries along the way.
Because all other names are already in use. World sounds big, so it's just marketing stuff. Names mean nothing.
This I don't think needs to be said, the actual purpose of the title has already been explained however... DTG, unfortunately does need to deal with the limitations of Licenses. Some train companies are super open and friendly with them, while others are more restrictive and closed off. I'm a bit of a hypocrite in thus, as not too long ago I complained about there being "one-off" countries. However, now I understand. As far as freight goes, its not as popular as passenger routes. Yes, there will always be the strong community of freight train enthusiasts, however it has always for the most part been outweighed by those wanting passenger trains. I would bet that if Freight Train action wasn't solely bring train from A to B, it would be more interesting. Maybe even the implementation of PTC would spicen things up, but alas, that isn't the case as of right now. Freight definitely isn't dead, but it's not in priority either.
I have to say I love all the feedback I've got already and like to Thank you all for adding you're 2cents of answers. Side notes too what everyone about DTG for making a free roam walk around world is totally false as they didn't create something that has already been made for them, what I mean is the Unreal Engine comes with a First-Person free walk around mode already built into their game engine if you didn't know that, so DTG didn't built that into TSW so that's a Lie! and it has already been done as Run8 and Trainz did it first on totally different game engines, but each there own on thinking or believe what they want. And as for "There are 195 countries in the World. You can’t represent them all" Yes you can Trainz has done it, not to the full 195 but higher than any other company on the planet, some countries players just don't care if their made or not like the super small New Zealand railroad line.
No one said DTG made a free roam walk around world. They said the definition of "world" in Train Sim World means being able to walk around and explore the routes rather than be stuck inside the train. Which is literally DTG's definition.
I would much rather just have the limited countries in TSW than have more countries done to a much lower quality. Quality over quantity everyday of the week.
Well, no, it is not "totally false" nor a "lie". They implemented it into TSW; from interactive buttons and seats on trains, to collectables, to the fact that they had to put things like the world ends which you can't cross. They could have simply removed first-person mode (e.g. Fortnite) and just done what TSC does. Something being in the engine doesn't absolve the developer of credit for it. So? Dovetail put it into TSW. They've never suggested it's a new concept nor is it a unique one. It is the defining difference between Train Simulator / Train Sim Classic, and Train Sim World, though. To be pedantic - no you can't. There's 27 countries without railways, and a number you couldn't reasonably get into for research/sounds; i.e. North Korea or Lebanon. "Trainz have done it but actually no they haven't" isn't a great line of arguement. Dovetail will have their reasons for sticking to EU/UK/US and I think that's much better than producing content with little research for the sake of ticking off countries. TSW5 will introduce 2 (3, depending on UW) new countries - adding to 4 in TSW2020, 3 in TSW2, and 2 in TSW4. So, we're already on track to be at 10/195 + 3/4 UK Nations. Given the improved ability for layers between European countries, I'd also make the arguement that it is probably the best move to stay with expanding there rather than random routes in Oceania or Africa which would lack the stock needed to feel alive.
I agree, but that is largely because one of those countries is the UK. Doubtless, if the UK wasn't part of the big three countries, I would much rather have the extra country so that I could drive in my country.
I would suggest everyone just ignore the OP, all they usually do is come in here every once in awhile and make big old rant and winge posts.
I dont have a problem with the "World" part... y know, I am not particularly rich dude, so the farthest I usually get is somewhere in western Austria or Prague in Czech Republic lol... not trying to elicit pity or anything, just stating the fact that with my salary I cant really afford to travel very far and frequently so for me this game is a nice, interesting and immersive way of seeing and driving interesting trains from countries I cant visit atm... also getting to know trains and railway operations in general, and that in turn makes real world stuff more interesting - thanks to this game and knowledge gained thanks to it, no train journey now is boring as it used to be a couple years back it is a nice introduction and incentive to get into the world of trains and railways, appreciate the whole thing about railways, how it moves ppl and goods/commodities, all of it I mean, imagine a trip from Vienna Hbf to Bratislava in an old 4020/6020, with outside temperatures quite warm (so the inside turns into a cheap little sauna lol), train being packed (being forced to stand despite being tired)... watching the world go by, and then... seeing a random Stadler Eurodual 9000 casually driving towards already prepared wagons and being giddy about it cos it is a super cool loco... and other passengers wondering what drugs you are on, looking like a little kid smiling at a loco
