Why is TSW4 so bad on old gen consoles and what's with this bug???
I'm not known for making threads to complain about TSW but this is getting ridiculous and it's really starting to annoy me.
There is a bug I first noticed when TSW3 was launched where when you zoom in or sometimes even when you are just in the game normally everything turns to low resolution textures. I was noticing it happening less and less until now. I have just loaded up a Great Western Railway livery I had just finished making in TSW4 on my Xbox one S. It looked good in livery designer and I wanted to get some pics in game to show my friends. So I boot up ecml, go into timetable mode and load up 1A18 Leeds to London Kings Cross with my fresh livery on the train.

For the first time in months I notice this bug. It's been 10 mins now and it's not going away. In short, GET RID OFF THIS BUG DOVETAIL!!! PLEASE!! IT'S DRIVING ME MAD! I cannot read signs in the cab and in various points in the train. It's blurring out my livery and the other LNER default liveries around me. It's awful. And what's worse, this doesn't happen ever on new gen consoles. We still have all the awful bugs and lagg as before. It's just on different trains.

We were told about all these new features like livery designer 2.0 and all the new optimization for the game, etc, etc...
None of it helps if you can't use it or you do use it and it looks absolutely pants because of a glitch.

Before you all get at me saying. Ughh, another winey baby complaining about TSW4.
First of all, I don't usually rant and dtg cause it feels a bit mean to rant about something that has taken alot of hard work to make.
And also, yes, I am a winey baby. For today at least.

 

That's the result of 13 years I guess... You're grandparents looking also not the best anymore after a long time... So my advice... Buy a better console if you want to avoid this issues

8th gen console with 8th gen hardware, of course it’s going to run terribly.
It’s time for you to invest in a 9th gen console maybe? Don’t know how you play on 8th gen

 

That even happens to me in Training Centre on XSX.

TSW3 did it too. Somethime the texture detail just drops and then comes back a few minutes later.

It's a very dramatic change when it does happen.

 

Good to see the 8th gen snobs are out in force again with good advice.

 

I am planning on buying a Xbox series X in the new year but damm. This is pretty bad and was the top core bug I have been wanting fixed for a year.

 

Hate to break it to you, but game optimization was not a mentioned feature of TSW4. It has been specifically stated that it's the same as TSW3. It's a game that "runs" on gen8, but really shouldn't be on gen8 anymore. Even some TSW2 routes were pushing that boundary.

 

This is what you get running modern games on your 10 year old ancient consoles.
Honestly what do people expect?

 

You can't really blame the end user. If it's being sold on an older gen console with flashy still pictures that are not representive of what they will see, that's on the developer selling it. Yeah I know marketing is all about tricking people into buying your thing, but a general user may not look at a store page on a console and then think "hey maybe I should do deep research to see if my console will look like these pictures before I buy it". Some will, but not all and the latter may be upset with the end result.

 

True (for new players) existing players should know better. Not surprised gen8 can't catch up with this game anymore. But I do agree they should have ditched support for gen8 if the game runs even worse on gen8 than TSW3. Alternatively they could have optimised the game for gen8. Don't understand why that version get's all the features of gen9. Concessions could have been made as gen8 is still a big part of the player base but I found TSW2 already problematic on gen8 so adding more memory hogs is not player friendly

 

I am also on original xbox one, had a constant out of memory error when trying to load any service on SKW (TSW3), raised a support ticket with DTG and basically they said it is my own fault, cause i am on 8th Gen, and i get it, it is old hardware, the industry has moved on. However DTG has released TSW3 and now TSW4 for 8th Gen.

 

I really hope they blamed the hardware and not you specifically for having an original Xbox One? That would be a strange take. But either way they are blaming hardware which they themselves decided to release the product on. Seems rather unprofessional on their part.

 

They blamed the hardware, but basically they are saying we can't help you, cause you have an 8th gen console. Which i understand. However they did release it for this hardware. And apparently they did knowing it can't viable run TSW3, let alone TSW4, that does bug me.

 

Wow that's bad on so many levels. Hopefully you got a refund out of it.

 

The only way it’s ever going to get better, is if gen 8 TSW sales drop off a cliff. DTG have clearly reached the edge of their optimisation abilities - this is something that is clear from the state of gen 9 & PC builds. The way only to get better performance is to brute force it (upgrade hardware & play with the .ini where applicable). Gen 8 hardware being as restrictive as it is will only compound that fact.

Even if 25% of sales on console are gen 8 (and I doubt it’s that low), it’s not something that Focus/DTG is going to drop, all they’ll do is keep chopping limbs off when they become an issue.

Series S is only headed for the same fate, lots of people buying that console assume they’re getting a next gen machine for almost half the cost, but it’s not the case. Something silly like 70% of combined Series X &S sales, were S sales. Going to be the same issue.

 

The series s isn’t that underpowered tho, and there is a larger memory version of the series S being launched, so you can’t really write off series S just yet

 

It does not have larger memory, it has larger storage than the the current base series S. specs wise it will be the same, aside from some smaller changes to power savings & Wi-Fi etc.

Underpowered is relative & for what we’re comparing to here (a gen 9 console), it is.

 

I have to agree with other users. If you are going to launch a product on a particular console, then the developer has to make sure the product works on that particular console. It's easy to tell people on Gen 8 to upgrade, but DTG are the ones that decided to launch the product on Gen 8 and as such they have to make sure the product works consistently and if they can't because of "hardware limitations" then why have it run older hardware in the first place?

The only reason it's still on Gen 8 is because there is still money to be made from Gen 8 users.

 

The moral of this story is: Never leave anything lying around in Doncaster because someone will even rob the textures off stuff if the opportunity arises. I was driving in the other day and came across a sign that said "Welcome to CAST"...someone had nicked the other letters to open a kebab shop

 

If you have one, try moving the tsw4 installation to an external drive, SSD if possible. The issue occurs when the game can't load in the hi res versions of textures fast enough from a drive and (I believe) times out and gives up. If it was the odd texture that does this then it could well be a bug, but in your screenshots its > 50% of the textures. Do you still have the original HDD in your PS4 from when it was new? If so, it could well be just getting on in age

Someone had this problem on PS4 last year with TSW2 or 3, I forget which, and I'm fairly sure it was fixed by using another storage device

 

I'm on an Xbox 1 s. I'll let you know how moving it to an external drive goes tho.

It's a bad look dropping gen 8 but concidering this is the quality gen 8 players get. It's pointless.

Yes. It is better. But not by much based on recent reviews.

 

DTG JD could you please elaborate whether or not it is official DTG policy that 8th Gen users experiencing issues with TSW3 (and TSW4) will not be helped since DTG considers the hardware insufficient (my support ticket is 62070)

 

Here's the bizarre Xbox naming convention:
Gen8:
Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X
Gen9:
Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X

Edit: The new refined versions of the Xbox Series S and X are basically more power efficient and additional storage models (the new black Series S just launched). Microsoft has stated that they won't be more than that as they are currently not interested in a mid gen refresh with additional performance boost as we saw in gen8.

PS4 and Xbox One came out in 2013. 10 years ago.

Try gaming on a 10 year old PC and you will get similar results. They just don’t have the power for modern games anymore.

That said if DTG wants to release games on this generation of console and take money from people on this generation then they should make a product that works. I can’t comment because I sold my PS4 years ago but TSW even on 9th Gen pushes the hardware it seems. I can’t imagine what it might be like on 2013 tech.

 

Quite honestly its my opinion if dtg will continue to support 8th gen they should continue to support 8th gen. Being told theres nothing they can do because of old hardware is awful considering that dtg seem to "Need" the revenue from 8th generation.

You can't say "We support 8th gen" and then be like "Ooops sorry thats your fault for that console" when it crashes?

Its a bit black and white, support 8th gen or don't?

 

Feels more like their poorly optimized default ini settings make it feel like the game is pushing the hardware. See the ini threads in the forum and how much better performance people are seeing with just a few changes. Imagine if DTG configured the ini settings per console so that they work best with each standard hardware piece? Not a guarantee, but perhaps things could be a lot better.

 

I really don’t understand the point of the Xbox Series S or why any gamers would buy it instead of the Series X. I’m not a snob, the Series S with such a small amount of RAM just seems silly.

Many got an Xbox Series S a few years back as the Series X wasn’t available due to the microchip shortage. The Series S is a pretty good machine for the money. £250 and it plays MSFS pretty well. Out of the box with no stutters looks great. Yes, there can be issues with running too many add-ones at once but overall it looks and plays great

 

Because for the cost, it’s an excellent machine.

Very cheap access to games. Just because it struggles at the top end, doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant. Sure it isn’t the best choice for things like TSW, MSFS & games with RTX/4k experiences, but for bigger games such as cod, fifa, GTA etc, it’s a great bit of kit for not a lot of money.

 

Is it really impossible to add the Class 158 to 8th gen? Because after having this said recently:

To now not getting Class 158 at all (yet still somehow getting 11 layers from other dlc's for ecml) is honestly such a let down. I would trade every single layer that is to be included just to get the Class 158 in

if it wasn't stated in the first place that we were going to get the class 158 on ecml 8th gen then fair enough.. but this is a big surprise considering what was said before, and is massively disappointing

 

You missed the 360 hardware configurations' naming


360 Core
360 Pro
360 Arcade (Revised Core, more internal storage, added HDMI port)
360 Elite (Revised Pro, more internal storage)
360 S (Slim Elite)
360 E (S with an XBox One style case)

The nomenclature of the last two generations of S for the weaker, slimmer console and X for the more powerful one have been a lot easier to follow than in Gen7

 

Also excellent for backcompat games, as it lets you play many 8th gen titles at a steady 60, and is capable of some required features for Gen9 titles that the hardware of the 8th gen consoles is incapable of. Like 60fps with raytracing in Metro Exodus.

 

Why is it when the textures go low like this in the Class 801 the passenger coaches are all showing good textures? You can read the signs in there but not the cab. Open the door to the gangway and the sign on the other side is clear. If I'm driver then it should be clear in the cab, if I'm passenger, the cab shouldn't take priority.

I've tried this with and without volumentic fog, motion blur, HD, 4K - makes no difference.

Call it what you want. It’s the truth. What advice can you give someone who’s running hardware equivalent to a GeForce GTX 1050 released back in 2016. Are you going to get the best performance on a 2023 game, that was developed for Next-gen and high end PC’s? Even with all the downgrading DTG does, 8th gen is going to run like poop.
I suppose you’re going to tell me, well not everyone can afford a next gen console? That’s true, but if you want something bad enough you make sacrifices. You get paid, pay your bills and put a side a little bit of money each money. Cut out the booze and cigarettes, and other luxuries too.
It’s doable.
