On console? This game badly needs better performance options rather than the 2 on display mode. Like quality, performance and balanced? Also it would be great to add in some of the pc graphical options (within reason). You could then balance out performance between these three settings , the third being layers. The consoles miss this badly in my opinion. The display options don’t really do much between these the settings hd and 4k.
It surprising this isn't an option yet, considering the rather underpowered Xbox Series S. But I know that with consoles, the graphical tweaking is rather limited. Nonetheless, probably would help out with the abhorrent performance issues at least slightly.
Not just on console. The PC also needs a much wider range of graphics options, allowing us to optimise or tame things to our taste.
The games which do offer full sets of PC graphics sliders on console are really handy when it comes to Series S, can confirm. There's a lot I'm willing to sacrifice to get a steady 60+fps. And in some cases it's options I never cared about in the first place.
My preference would be for them to limit the size of distant scenery and cap the framerate at 30fps in addition to further optimisations. If its a choice between a busier route or nicer scenery, I know which option I'm taking. Scenarios becoming a bigger part of the game would be nice aswell... they all run significantly better as they're unschackled from the burdensome timetable mode so why not give console players 20 scenarios of the frankfurt s bahn with a bunch of traffic on them as an apology for the gimped timetable mode. Paying more for less just isn't going to fly on gen 9 for most people.
Certainly on flat routes, the horizon draw distance could be pulled in. I think SimRail still gets away with 2km and it doesn’t look too bad. Then again, it’s something that ought to be configurable.
It genuinely shocks me the framerates some people will consider tolerable, when to my eyes it looks like a slideshow. I've run into people on potato PCs running cyberpunk at 14fps with a bunch of the graphics cranked up and they think it looks fantastic. I say let people choose how they want a game to run. If you click the disclaimer popup on the "advanced" graphics options, you only have yourself to blame and can always return to the baseline presets with a single button press on the main menu when implemented properly. And if it means I can up the framerate by pushing those sliders to the left instead of the right, all the better.
Back when I was on my trusty old Toschiba Satellite C850, it used to pull a mind boggingly massive 15 FPS (On a good day) on.... drum roll please Roblox! Desperation to play a game will definitely help with playing something at the rate of grandma's vacation slideshows. That being said, it reminds me of the MSFS console settings which are pretty good, they allow for alot of control and customizability. Something that would definitely come into handy with TSW.
As an interesting aside, when playing around the last couple of evenings trying to coax better frame rate out of WCMLoS on my GTX1650, adjusting the current options we have made very little difference. Even turning shadows to low (which look awful), foliage to medium (which looks sparkly and grim) plus a few other bits and pieces, it was still only running at 14 FPS. Time to upgrade the hardware, yes definitely, but at the same time the game engine seems hard coded to run pretty much as it is regardless of settings.
It’s only worth playing on pc because of mods. Jetwash mod gives it the graphic fidelity it deserves. It’s unplayable otherwise and for some reason doesn’t look or act as stable as consoles.
