Do you think there are any chances that DTG brings back steam in TSW 6? And with a new route or a railtourpack?
Honestly there’s more chance to see Caltrain back in TSW6 than any steam content, even though many of us would like to have it back to the game.
I don’t really have an opinion on steam as I’m not a fan of it. I know there’s some players that want to see its return someday, and I really hope that happens. This game is meant for everyone to enjoy.
I say this is the year were we have the highest chances since of rail 200 now we just need to hope the people that keep saying old stuff doesn’t sell get taken away from making route decisions
Confusing question? Would i like steam.......Yes. Do I think it will happen......No. So I went with Yes as it's more important to have it than if it will happen. Don't need any more excuses for DTG to abandon types and eras. I want more of all types of traction in the game as it's a simulation, even if some of isn't exactly my type.
4 'Yes' options seems somewhat excessive and biased, a simple Yes/No/Don't Know choice would have sufficed.
There are so many types of steam locos we could have, but if there was to another made for TSW it would have to be a tank engine such as a GWR Pannier. My ultimate dream for TSW6 is as the core route we get Exeter to Plymouth with the XC Class 220 and as a bonus the Dartmouth railway, Paignton to Kingswear including the GWR Pannier tank or even a Prairie would be great.
l keep saying it, that l would love to see a Prarie and/or a Pannier in the game. I feel DTG owe us that.
See, I think this is part of the problem which is making DTG avoid steam. They’ll see us saying this and think there’s no point bothering with steam. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending them. It is DTG who made the messy physics in the first place after all and it is those physics and lack of updates to them that killed the sales of Peak Forest and lead them to saying “steam doesn’t sell”, which isn’t true. The reality of it was that a product not up to standard doesn’t sell, that was the case with the physics not receiving any sort of update with the route. I’d personally take new steam era routes and locomotives with the current physics on one condition… That being that there are incremental updates to the core steam simulation with each release, each update being retroactively fitted to previously released steam content as well until the steam simulation is at the point that we all hoped it would be at by now. Whatever the case, DTG’s approach to steam up until now has been poor, they just bury their heads in the sand at any mention of it. I’d like to be proven wrong, but they’ll probably just ignore this thread. There’s two people making content in the Editor section of the form, a GWR Pannier Tank and the Talyllyn Railway. They’re easily the most interesting things to come from the public editor recently, yet there’s no sign of DTG picking those up on the third party programme… I’ve said this before but they try to quote TSW as the “ultimate” train simulator in marketing. Unfortunately for them, TSW isn’t that and never will be because they aren’t supporting one of the three key elements… That is steam locomotives. The ultimate train simulator, it would have plenty of historical and steam content, plenty of diesel content and plenty of modern electric content. DTG has to bring back steam.
I would like to see steam get a fair representation but it needs to be done properly and the existing content overhauling to function more realistically. I also feel DTG should make the focus of any future steam enterprise more workaday, smaller locos, secondary route, maybe even a branch line (of reasonable length) rather than get carried away on top link traction and main line routes with massive complex stations and yards. I still think something like the Somerset and Dorset would sell by the bucket load, particularly if it went all the way from Bath to Bournemouth.
Agreed, they made the wrong choice starting with Liverpool - Crewe. Bigger routes like that should only come once the foundations are set and there is enough content to layer onto those mainline routes, otherwise you end up with an empty timetable that never meets its true potential, like Spirit of Steam.
I am almost certain steam is an itch Matt P would really like to scratch because from what I've seen, he himself is a steam enthusiast, even his FB profile picture is of him on the footplate on Braunton.
I wish DTG would jump in with some of the TSW editor projects. There's a pannier being worked on in there which looks great and someone's doing one of the narrow gauge railways which looks incredible!
If DTG just released a dlc update for WSR or even like a rail tour pack just to have a go at fixing steam physics that would be something. It doesn't have to be an incredible route. Like a Clan Line rail tour pack would be amazing lots of Southern routes to run her on for scenarios etc.
I can't see dtg wasting their time on it. On the release of SOS the physics weren't perfect but close enough. People complained, dtg messed about with it and cocked it up even more. Obviously a lot of players don't want the messing about that comes with driving a steam engine. I mentioned it before but if dtg could make it like TSC with both expert and simple controls, I mean have a simple control like Thomas on top of expert controls, more casual players might buy into it.
Yeah, it would be nice to get *something* new in terms of steam. I don't think it'll ever happen in the core routes (though being Rail 200, I can dream), but it's surely past time to give steam another crack. I think part of the problem is that with the physics troubles, no third parties are interested in cornering the market, either. I do hope there is someone at DTG working quietly behind the scenes on steam so it can truly shine. The trouble for me, at least, is that Spirit of Steam has too lacklustre a timetable to keep me invested, and a severe lack of variety, while Peak Forest is one I really would like to get into again, but I won't touch it until we get the 104 add-on so I can have the 'full' experience. But that seems to get further away every time we hear about it, sadly.
It annoys me when people say a lot of people this, a lot of people that. You’re making assumptions without actual evidence. I would like all the messing around with steam, I am sure others would too, but we can’t claim to know how many without seeing any real data from surveys and the like.
The jam comes out for me when people give DTG more ammo to not resume steam development when I’d like them to be encouraged to so everyone gets a bit more of what they want!
Exactly, bringing back steam and putting the work into fixing it is nothing but a good thing. It gives TSW some more of that needed variety. There’s only JT & TSG who are willing to give us some of that variation currently. Modern routes are fine, but there’s more interesting content to be made if you go back in time. As for third parties, why would they want to jump on TSW steam when the foundation in the core physics are broken? There’s some really great, steam focused third parties in TSC, but DTG need to give them a good reason to want to make content for TSW. VictoryWorks did make a start on the Hayling Island Branch and an LBCSR A1 Terrier but stopped working on it after DTG’s disappointing comment regarding steam traction.
I'm on my phone and can't seem to grab the link for the pannier. But if you look on the pc editor forum it's there! And looking good! Talylln https://forums.dovetailgames.com/threads/talyllyn-railway-progress-updates.91051/
I want to see a return of steam. Just stating the obvious, not giving dtg any ammo. [EDIT - Jan - Inappropriate]
A totally selfish view but there's so many types of traction that's missing in TSW while there are already some steam engines. I'll be more than happy for development time to be spent on further steam locos but only once we've got a similar number of Mk1-3 EMUs, likewise slam-door DMUs, a similar number of modern freight locos, post-BR DMUs and some route extensions/upgrades to existing routes that are looking a bit tired. Steam engines are very beautiful and all that, but I don't enjoy driving them in sims and because I grew-up with a post-steam electric railway, I don't feel any connection with them. As I say, that's just my selfish, personal view.
Yes I’d be delighted to see the old slam door EMUs, they’d be next on my traction wishlist. I feel like Armstrong Powerhouse might be the devs to bring them to us.
If DTG gave us a choice between a steam loco and a Class 120 Cross Country DMU or a Class 201 - 207 Thumper DEMU, then steam can go back in the kettle!
Steam will always be my number one choice in traction, BR era Diesel traction is second to that, then everything else follows in no particular order.. They're just more interesting to look at, more moving parts, the smell and sounds and most importantly of all for a train simulator... A lot more interesting and challenging to drive, especially if manual firing is a thing like in TS Classic. There are a few non-steam trains that provide a good experience too though, the BR Class 87 & 101 being highlights in TSW. I do agree though that we do need a third rail London route that isn't set in current day. A BR slam door era version of the Chatham Mainline: Victoria & Blackfriars - Dover & Ramsgate route would go down a treat. We've got enough Electrostar routes, we need something with the proper third rail traction now Anyway, steam's the topic here. TSW6 will hopefully be the one that brings it back.
The steam era is just more iconic and depending on the loco they choose depends if steam would start to be more of a thing in this game, like if they choose a tank engine which was used on both steam routes then we may get somewhere unlike the DMU which we will get at some point anyways
I voted for yes and especially for US steamers. Big Boy, Challenger, Mikoda amd so on are such impressive locos. But german DR BR 01, 05, 44, 45, 50 and 52 would be very nice too of course.
I would say we need for all countries more steam locomotives and especially German or us steam locomotives because there are already some British steam locomotives in TSW
TBH I like them all. Especially british steamers from the 1920's and 1930's are very very interesting. The impressive thing on that uk machines is, that they are lighter and shorter than their German counterparts, but they had the same performance and abilities. And I say that as a german.
I also find steam locomotives from other countries interesting and i like most of them, but i don’t know how good you can compare a British steam locomotive to a German Einheitslok (Standard Locomotives).
here’s some of my models, I would love to see all of them in game specially the last one which is probably the most realistic to happen if any
The Einheitsloks have the background that the German Federal state was responsible for the Railways by the German constitution from 1919. Bevore that each single German part state (like Prussia or Bavaria) had their own Railways with their own rolling stock. So when the German Railway agency (Deutsche Reichsbahn) startet, they relatively early realized the old rolling stock from the former part states railways is not enough so they made their own loco building programm for that united German railway agency. That was the cause of the Einheitslokomotivenprogramm. Beginning in the 1920's. Ending im the 1940's. The BR 01 the first Einheitslokomotive was released exactly 100 years ago. The BR 05 became the lighter sister of the BR01. Both pulled Express Passenger trains. For heavy cargo trains DR let built the BR 44 and 45. Universal locos were the BR 50 and the standardized a bit downgraded version was the Kriegslok BR 52. And if you look at the performance and service datas, you can compare the BR 01 with the 6P or with the A3 Flying Scotsman. The BR 18.201 with A4 Mallard. The Br 44 and 45 with the 8F and the 9F.
