If you have a 4070 im not sure but for a 4070TI(super), 4080(ti)(super) or a 4090 it will work they are nearly equal at the 5070 or higher. Im pretty sure you can use it.

Are the recommended specifications intended for those who have purchased a recent PC?

It depends on what you have on the hardware side.... PCs could have very different specs so when you share youre pc specs i can answer if you can use the Epic setting

There's nothing stopping Epic Settings working on weaker hardware, but your performance won't be very good below our recommendation. That being said, if you are happy to cap your FPS at 30 and use frame generation that could be an option.

If I can have 60FPS stable with no ghosting from AA that would be an achievement, I care much less about the extra detail level that was added for us on PC. Sadly I am on RTX 3000 series so frame gen is out, but could still use DLSS upscaling instead of needing to actually downscale from a higher res to have a smooth image. Currently the in game upscaling has quite some blurriness if DLSS/FSR does it better I will be happy.

Didnt watch the video, just skimmed the FAQ article and various reports. Is Freight Hauler a TSW7 exclusive feature or we can expect it to be backported to routes when they get updates? Some pre TSW6 got the TSR treatment over the year is it anything similar in terms of integration complexitiy?

I think the 4090 is as good as if not better than a 5070?

even the 4070 ti super is superior to the 5070 (except for the memory type, 40xx uses GDDR6/GDDR6X and 50xx uses GDDR7)

Is there a great deal of difference between GDDR 6X and 7?

in my opinion (based on my usage scenario) no.
I was considering an upgrade to the 5070 Ti, but I concluded it’s not worth it cuz the performance gain doesn't justify the cost
that’s why i’m going to wait for the 5070 Ti SUPER

Do you think I’d see a great deal of performance upgrading from 4090-5090 on TSW? I just don’t feel the game and core is good enough to need that boost

Is it just Licensing that means the Rylestone trains will be DB Cargo instead of GBRF as they are in real life. Also a nice shot of Valley Parade, if Nethermoor Park (Just North of Guiseley station) is in game is it the most stadiums in a route?

Lots of railtour potential too, as it is frequently used to get to the Settle & Carlisle line, plus the KWVR. Plus the RHTT does a circuit here too.

Other stock in the game that could have been layered / be added in custom?
    - 142 & 150 in Northern liveries
    - HST (At Leeds, At Bradford, up the stub to Harrogate)
    - 220 (At Leeds)
    - 801 as an 802 At Leeds
    - Class 90 (but would need MK4s really)

That sounds like a potentially painful experience. Frame gen, to reliably work properly, requires a consistent 30 as the absolute minimum input framerate to work off. So if you can't guarantee that as a baseline floor, expectations really ought to be tempered.

It's not ideal, but I'm aware that some people already do this and are perfectly happy. All depends on the individual.

Have any of your testers used the 4090 on Epic mode or whatever it’s called? What were the general FPS? Has the version of UE changed or been upgraded for TSW7 or is it still using 4.xx?

Are we going to have to redownload current content clean for TSW7?

No change to the UE version. That's a huge undertaking and causes more problems than it solves. I've heard from several RTX 4080 owners and they don't seem to notice any performance deficit with Epic Settings, so that may be the sweet spot. An RTX 4090 and above should have no issues.

The 4090 is the second best graphics card just behind the 5090. It performs better than a 5080.

That's not 100% true.... The 5080 has better systems via AI so in some games with upscaling the 5080 is better. Also created true DDR7 instead of DDR6 of the 4090. So yeah it's not always a winner :)

when it comes to raw firepower, the 4090 outperforms the 5080 by a significant margin
AI features don't even count toward raw firepower

Nice, but that’s not how most people use the card. Practically everyone uses Frame Gen if the game supports it, so… It’s a bit like buying a sports car that can drive 500 km/h, but you’re not allowed to do that at all. Cool that it can, but that doesn’t automatically make it a better car. A slower car can still perform better because it has more luxurious driving‑assistance features or more comfortable seats.

And the 5080 is better in Frame gen scenarios so its not that Black or white

I don't know what better systems via AI you are talking about. The 5080 has multiframe generation and that's it AFAIK.

Thats what i was pointing out and its support with ai models.

    Quote:

DLSS 4: It uses AI for Deep Learning Super Sampling to improve visual quality. Frame Generation: It uses AI to generate extra gaming frames for smoother motion.

Frame generation adds input lag, so not good for any game where your reflexes count. I do not use it in most games just for that reason, and most people I know do the same.

TSW does not natively support framegen. You can try to force it thru nvidia drivers but don't expect miracles.

Yep, I'd also add ironically frame gen from any serious tech analysis I've seen is actually best to improve already good base line performance. If you're playing a single player game like Spider-Man, it can be great, I've used frame gen to boost the FPS. and it works well. But then my baseline FPS during a dip is still over 100FPS without it, I'm only using it to smooth out dips and to boost the open-world. You never want to use it when input lag matters, and you never want to use it when you can't run the base game at a decent FPS. And while that number is officially 30, anyone that's seriously looked into this stuff always seems to recommend using 60 or more.

So basically frame gen is perfect for a slow paced train simulator game, where the most latency sensitve activity is pressing the AWS or SiFa button in a matter of seconds. And a lot of people accepted 30FPS, even myself on my previous GPU as an acceptable framerate to have a bit better graphics. So the addition is welcome, the problem is that whoever would benefit from this would already be able to run natievely at 120FPS, but thats something to blame on nVidia not DTG.

Yeah thats perfect. But when you use Frame Gen x2 you would noticed zero of input lag. When you change to x4, x5 or X6 that's true there you see input lag. And for a game like COD or Battlefield is Frame Gen not very useful at all. Those games are short maps or they have polished the game so good that you have 300fps without frame gen

In fairness that is where the boost is in the 50-series cards. They are barely a measurable uplift in terms of raw native rendering over the 40-series, but they are more performant at specific tasks like frame gen. This is why I have no desire to replace my 4090 any time soon.

Absolutely. I wouldn't even consider turning frame gen on where baseline framerate is outside of the VRR window. If the resulting framerate from x2 framegen isn't at least 90+ it's a no-go, and I'd never use frame gen above x2 because the lag gets far too noticeable.

DTG did not add frame generation to TSW 7. Unreal Engine 4 does not support it. They are saying you can go to the Nvidia app and force it on there.

Yes, but that would be for AMD cards. We were discussing Nvidia cards at the moment.

PS: Just checked and it seems FSR frame generation is also not available in UE4. Maybe they are using FSR for something else, or they might have backported it from UE5. We need some clarification on this.

That was my point. 40 series cards can do frame gen (meaning adding 1 AI frame between 2 real frames) as good as 50 cards can. The difference is that series 50 cards can add more (2,3,4...) AI frames between 2 real frames and 40 series cards can't. As you say, adding more than 2x adds too much lag so that is why I think the 4090 is the second best card at this time right after the 5090 and above the 5080.

Not relevant to this game, but the 50 series cards also have some drawbacks, like no support for 32 bit PhysX that the 40 series have. Not a problem going forward but some good old games like the Batman series use the 32 bit PhysX.

Still, just to put some kind of closure to this debate, rest assured that anyone with a 5090, 4090, 5080 or 4080 is going to be more than fine for TSW 7.

I have several UE4 games with inbuilt toggles for DLSS Framegen right there in the ingame menus, so it's not impossible to have the game turn it on and off without the player needing to go and do it from the Nvidia app.

DTG said it can't. Maybe it has something to do with their modified version of UE4.

PS: Just asked the AI what UE version is required for DLSS frame generation and it said you need UE 5.2 for native support. It would be possible to modify the UE4.26 engine, integrate the Optical Flow Accelerator and backport the UE5 plugin but it is complex and not recommended.

I don't see why not, surely if it can be forced via the app, it's just adding a checkbox that toggles a single variable in a config file somewhere or makes some kind of API call? I assume so since when I toggle a setting ingame, it toggles that in the Nvidia app's config for the game too.

I'll check which version of UE4 some of the older ones are using and see if it's like raytracing, where that needs 4.27
In my experience since these games are from 2021 and earlier some of them only have 2x as an option due to DLSS4 not existing yet back when they were still being updated

Interested now how Ghost Ship went about implementing DLSS3 FG in Deep Rock Galactic in 2024.

They managed to avoid the most common and nauseating error when putting it into UE4 where it applies motion vectors to the HUD (Looking at you, EA).

Calling it now though, as soon as TSW7 is in the wild, there will be complaints about the brakes going into emergency, and when asked those players will be using MFG and have fallen afoul of the input lag.

I will say, this will be the first TSW in several years where I am going to have to go back to the drawing board on my custom engine.ini - interested in how the new skylight intensity slider will impact my enjoyment, for the better I can only hope!
