Think I've found the sweet spot for my PC settings now - FWIW it's a Dell 8940, i7-10700 @ 2.9Ghz, 32Gb RAM, 1Tb SSD, RTX 2060 6Gb, 4K Asus VG289 monitor - so not a fancy gaming rig, more a 5-year-old dev box The settings I use give me 30fps + even in Warrington and Crewe, so I think I've pretty finished with the settings tweaking for now: Basic settings Screen res: 3840x2160 Windows mode: Windowed Fullscreen Graphics preset: Medium Advanced settings Foliage: High Shadows: High Effects: High Sky: High Fog: High Post processing: High View distance: High Textures: High Enhanced Lighting: Enabled DirectX: 11 Max FPS: 60 Anti aliasing: FAA VSync: Off Screen %: 84 FOV: 90 This gives me a pretty consistent 30+ fps even in the heavy areas, so I'm very happy with how it's running now, and it looks fantastic with the new lighting! Took a lot of fiddling to get here, but it was worth it. YMMV of course, but thought I'd share in case it helps.
Yeah, compared to TSW6, it definitely runs smoother (even if comparing TSW7 Epic vs TSW6 Ultra) and looks way better because of the enhanced lighting. Though where I see little difference is between TSW7 Epic and TSW7 Ultra, which I think may be due to my monitor resolution.
I think it takes a bit of tweaking with various things. I bought a new monitor earlier in the year and thought, well it looks okay but not as sharp as you see on streams. I've found putting a large book underneath it and raising it has made a world of difference!
Well I arrive with a slightly more optimistic view this evening. After dropping my resolution to 1440p, DLSS on Quality with Advanced Settings on High and Enhanced Lighting enabled I am getting a solid 30 FPS using Medway Valley as a benchmark. I did try pushing foliage, view distance and texture to ultra and didn’t seem to affect performance but chose to drop them back to high to be on the safe side. So not bad for my old potato - it looks stunning and the fans on my lucky RTX 3050 are barely stirring. All now well and the rest of my curated DLC will be reinstated over the next few days.
Pleased to hear it! Assuming you have decent internet you might be a candidate for GeForce Now when the game is on there. It’s also heartening to see so many people enjoying the lighting! Regarding epic settings, High and Ultra are just fine and as they were in TSW6 (although we discovered the other day two of the ultra options have some become unattached in the menu and DTG are aware). The Epic setting that would make the most difference to the visuals is foliage as that basically removes the foliage pop-in. If you’re on an older GPU then set the pre-set to high or ultra as you would then try foliage quality only on epic. It might be too much, it might not, but it’s the one setting that would really make the difference.
Yes all going well. I presume God Rays/Lens Flare still has to be added manually to the ini file, as TSS mentioned in one of his posts/YT clips?
‘God Rays’ are core. Camera lens flare is very marmite so if you wish to add it then yes, it’s an ini addition.
Most train driver’s eyes do not have lens flare. I’ve never understood why anyone would want lens flare in a first person view.
Motion blur is fine and it’s quite subtle. I’m assuming that if you have a high enough frame rate it’s probably not needed and becomes more of an effect but it certainly helps get rid of some artefacts on console. I’ve tried playing without it and the whole game just looks that little bit worse.
Musing as I stir the rice pudding (!) the biggest killer for me is still the adaptive eye going in and out of tunnels. That’s how a cheap camera records it, not the human eye.
You can add some .ini lines on PC that drastically remove the effect. [SystemSettings] r.EyeAdaptationQuality=1 r.EyeAdaptation.ExponentialTransitionDistance=1 r.EyeAdaptation.LensAttenuation=0.78 The first setting reduces the quality/method of eye adaptation, while ExponentialTransitionDistance affects how the exposure transition behaves as it approaches the target. Unreal documents the latter as controlling the point at which exposure changes switch to a slower exponential transition.
True about that cheap camera. That camera feeling I also have with the rest of the lighting. In TSW1 and 2 when the sun is shining and bright, everything in the shadows is dark. This is just how photo camera's capture a picture, the sky is like it should be, but the shadows to dark. With TOD4 they turned it around, in the shadows everything is now clearly visible, the rest is overexposured.
So after a weekend of testing I've come to eat some humble pie. Is TSW 7 better than TSW 6 - Yes it is, but it's still got a fair few bugs that need ironing out. Does TSW 7 run better than TSW 6 - Yes it does, but you've really got to dial in for your system, just because it has pre-defined settings, they don't work for every configuration of hardware, so be prepared to tinker to find the level you want. Do you need more than 60fps? No you really don't, this game can be played at a smooth 30fps, as long as you configure it to be smooth and reduce the hardware lag spikes when you overload your system. Aim for 60fps, listen to others and find that sweetspot. Would I recommend buying it? Not at the moment, grab the free pack, and catch the 3 new routes and trains in a sale, as you can get the performance boosts that make it enjoyable again from the free version, while they patch the new routes and trains and iron out the kinks. Was I quick to judge it, yes I was, but thats 3 years of frustration with DTG boiling over. The product appears to be going in the right direction, however they are sticking to their guns with certain choices which I still don't think is the best way to go, but hey ho, so yes I was wrong, but I have valid arguments to be made that this really wasn't ready for prime time, and should have had another month in the oven. I know that everyone is racing to beat GTA 6 out this year, but I think this product is niche enough that people who play it, will go back to it, even when GTA 6 comes out.
You will be able to purchase the deluxe version of TSW7 for about £9 in a years time. Saw TSW6 deluxe for that recently, £8.99 on Loaded, £6.52 on instant gaming.
I reckon by Easter next year, 80% off which would be around £13 - far more pocket friendly. What I don't understand is why DTG don't continue the discount into the main release for a couple of weeks as SimRail do. That way if you get the free version, but actually come round to feeling more positive you can at least pick up the pack for the same price - those that pre ordered still got their early access period. Mind, I wouldn't be surprised if the Christmas Steam sale doesn't see at least 20% off, particularly if full price sales haven't been that great. And I do wish they had gone for Regional Bundles - the Leeds route I might have dropped £30 all in on the route and Class 333, but not £33 + £13 = £46, they are taking the St Michael (same goes for the German and US kit) with those prices.
I don’t know why some moan about the price when it will fall in the forthcoming sales. l bought the deluxe as l had a free Xbox £25 gift card and paid for the rest on PayPal credit. Cost me £11 this month and for the next two. If l want it on Steam l will get it next year when the price is low.
It's a stonewall guarantee to be 80% off by Easter! I don't know about anyone else but I find it kinda ruins the moment when you buy something on day one with gameplay impacting issues because by the time your purchase is in a better place, the novelty period has gone and you'll never get to appreciate it in the same way you would if it had been working when you bought it. Becoming a late adopter and taking advantage of these sales not only increases the chance of preserving that initial novelty period (by way of post-launch support) but also puts you in the bizarre position of actually benefiting financially for the inconvenience of having to do so!
Yes, but they are not full product sales. They are only a small selection. The only products l haven’t bought for xBox are the expert locomotives and rail tour products. Not worth paying full price for products l will only play a few times, but would add them if in a sale. There are only three TSW products l haven’t bought for XBox, so not really bothered to spend full price for those.
