    Hi it's Driverwoods and I'm asking in the off topic forums to how long the Calder Valley Line is? Because the Line Wikipedia article it doesn't mention how long it is and services are mentioned. On the other hand Oberhausen-Arnhem Railway Wiki article gives it the length of 99 km. The reason why I'm asking this. Since I'm going to make a post about the Calder Valley line into the suggestion forums. Because the only Manchester to Leeds railway in the game is Huddersfield Standedge Tunnel route NTP 1983

    It's my local line and I guess it's about 45 miles from Manchester to Leeds. Certainly within DTG's favoured length for routes. To greatly increase operational interest they could include the Oldham Loop which runs from Rochdale through Oldham and rejoins the Calder Valley just after Newton Heath depot. That would add around ten miles with lots of station stops. It would have to be set before 2009 though as it was converted into the Metrolink tram system that year. Well, it took them three years actually, it didn't open again until 2012. The NTP route already has the first two miles out of Manchester and there's probably a mile or so already done at the Leeds end but after 1994 Victoria station was changed quite dramatically so modernising it in the game would mean a new station.

    Thank you for telling me and I'm wondering what trains were used in the 1980s for Calder Valley Line.

    0623tu301182.jpg This is a class 110 dmu at Slattocks between Moston and Castleton heading for Manchester Victoria. These three car DMUs were built especially for this route and were known as Calder Valley sets. They were used on most of the passenger services alongside other first generation units. There were few loco hauled passenger trains on this route in the 1980s as far as I can remember. Freight was in the hands of classes 25, 31,40,45,47,56.

    0519f151082.jpg There was a lot of coal traffic on the Calder Valley route bringing coal from the Yorkshire coal field into the Manchester area. This short branch went from Middleton Junction to Chadderton coal yard, about a mile away and was a regular job for an 08 shunter, collecting the empty wagons from the yard and propelling full ones dropped off by a westbound coal train. It wasn't just shunters though, I've seen class 25s and even class 40s going up there over very overgrown and dodgy track.

    I searched it up and conventiently found a Freedom of Information link. Network Rail conveniently replied and I have the following Information;

    Leeds - Man Vic:
    80.055km = 49.75 (Rounded to 5) miles

    You can use the RailMiles Mileage Engine to find the distance between points on the British national rail network. It works it out via the shortest route, so you may have to break it up into smaller sections to get the lengths of specific routes.

    Yeah, it's via Bradford. Network Rail calculated it as Leeds - Bradford & Bradford - Man Vic.

    But they included a full length with it.

    Having been a railway enthusiast for over 60 years I've seen the line through from the end of steam, the first generation dmu era, the coming of the Pacers and Sprinters, the conversion to Metrolink of the Oldham loop and the present day Spanish trains which are taking over from the 150s. I've seen the amount of freight traffic dwindle, goods yards closed, branch lines ripped up, the variety of locomotives which used to haul freight reduced to just one class, the 66, a 60 if you're lucky. I can experience the current day route any time I like just by buying a ticket. That's why I suggested setting it in the past. Now that steam locomotives exist in tsw3 I would go further and suggest back dating it to the 1950s when every single train was loco hauled, and there were a lot more of them. The branches to Middleton and Werneth were still in operation as was the line through Heywood to Bury, now the East Lancashire Railway. The variety and scope of operations was intense. A bit more interesting to me than the hourly dmu service and daily freight we see today.

    there was a line that came off from Sowerby Bridge to Rishworth via Triangle and Ripponden (where I live so I think it would be cool to backdate it a while if that were to be added)

    Yes, I think so. I now have 2 trains an hour to get to Rochdale instead of 1.
