Distance Field Shadows. It's an optimised technique for being able to render shadows further into the distance, it costs more in memory but doesn't cost much if anything in framerate - so if you have the memory (as you do on the bigger consoles and PC) then it is a no-brainer way to improve visuals.
Surely then if its memory then xbox one x could handle it as that has more memory allowance than a series s if your talking ram.
Potentially it could - yes, it does have a decent amount more memory... however from a logistical perspective - the game is currently the exact same files on Xbox One and Xbox One X and my understanding is that DFS is something that is built as part of the build process of the game, so if we added it to X1X, it'd be there on X1 as well since they are the same build. I don't know if we can build separately, or deploy separately on those platforms (I don't think so) - suffice to say there would need to be some work done to experiment with this and find out if its possible and right now that's not on anyones plan.
It's going to be different with the next-gen upgrade, closer to PC toggles/sliders I think was mentioned on the stream, something not usually seen in a console game.
So is the Series S version basically the Series X version running in performance mode/1080p? Or will it have its own performance/quality setting?
