For the freezing problem and additional to the Workaround by DTG, for me following had helped: - I searched for every "image.png" in the Content and Asset folder. Then I saved all of them again via a batch-function from tools something like IrfanView. Some other thumbnail I changed the aspect ratio to a 2:1 ratio, for example: 512x256 or 256x128 (numbers should be a even number), so you get also smaller file sizes. For a small thumbnail in the menü you dont need a 4k- picture in the folder. And you don´t need crazy formats like 527x247. (Note: do not make pictures greater than they are. Making 256x128 to a 512x256 makes no sense too) For me now it seems to work: I can scroll through menue pages without any freezing (at this time ), and without deleting some of these. Of course, only the thumbnails are founded that are not in an ap-folder. Alternatively you can also rename the thumbnails instead of deleting (as described by DTG), so you have for cases a "backup" In the german rail-sim forum someone posted a useful guide for Irfan View:
I think you might have done more that what was needed. The Asset image.png files did not seem to be causing a problem - just those in the Content Folders And those in the Content/Routes only seemed to be Freeware routes. DTG and most other Payware routes don't seem to have a problem. Simply opening the files and saving them again as non-interlaced, which is default, has solved the problem for me
Pretty sure all the loco images are going to need "going through" too, I've sorted my 4 (or was it 5) routes that were causing the menu crash out of my 10 pages in standard (13 in QD), but when I try selecting the loco menu in QD then it hangs again.
There are more png images in LocoInformation files that are non-standard images. While most images that are divisible by 2 eg; 512x25, 256x128 will work, those that are not can cause crashes. I have been using paint to convert these images with success and now have all loco thumbnails in QD, and profile pages. One note is that if you change anything within a .ap file then if you ever do a file verify it will revert back.
I have not had a problem with any locos so far but I have not tried all of them. When I go to do a Quick Drive it says Page 1/102 - a lot of which are QD consists for some stock I installed.
Not for me. The thing is: only with Three Corner route it not worked for me. I had still freezes in the menue pages. And thats a Payware route, as wich the other ones that DTG described in their workaround. Then I newly saved the png thumbnails (those outside ap). Still had freezes. Then some of the big ones I reduced - now it worked - for the routes. In rollmaterial I had freezes too. So same procedure here. Sure, its possible I´ve done too much at the end, but for me it worked at the end and I can scroll through all QD pages of routes AND rolling stock. And maybe (depending what DTG will do next) I have perhapse a little prevention in thumbail file size and ratio. And again, escpecially in the rollmaterial section I had several crazy aspect ratios of thumbnails that have made no sense. Who knows what other reasons causes all the problems: I´ve red several times that by some people a simple resave of the thumbnails worked. Other have done this, but they have still problems when starting TS or a scenario. Depends it if someone have deextractet the ap-files? Depends it on Windows-version? Other freeware stuff? Some other reasons?
Not had an issue with loco files. I've been through every page in every menu and nothing is wrong. In the Standard menu, there are 42 pages, and nothing causes a freeze here. The vast majority of it all is third party as well. I feel sorry for those who also have a lot of world routes and locos though, as they must have over a hundred pages of locos in QD and Stnadard menus if they'd been playing a long time.
And I spoke too soon as I went thru the QD - got as far as page 6 and it crashed. I might try the method you found on RailSim.de
So having found and downloaded infranview I ran the program according to the settings shown and the game still crashes at the same page of the loco menu in Quick Drive. Looks as if I will have to look at each file separately
Tried again to use Infranview and managed to mess up a good proportion of my image.png files by only resizing them in one aspect.
Here is a suggestion for a temporary removal of Image.png files from which you can easily reinstate the images once Dovetail have fixed the issue. We don't know how long it will take them to fix it but they say they are working on it. Meanwhile, rather than editing a load of images which, in the end, will probably be fine, you can just put them out of use by renaming them. I use "Everything" - a superb piece of software. This will speedily search for all instances of "Image.png". Rename them to something distinct like "Image.png.CRASH" so that you can find them later when you need to. You can use F2 and Paste to run through each one quickly. Train Simulator should now start, but have no thumbnails visible. One the fix is issued, just reverse the process.
It's the interlacing in the png files that now causes the crash, not the image size. It doesn't even have to be divisible by 2. For example, 256x144 (a 16:9 ratio) works fine just as long as the PNG isn't interlaced.
Same problems even now 6 months later. Trying to load any quick drive and it stops responding, end of story.
Have you reported this problem to DTG? https://forums.dovetailgames.com/threads/reporting-a-technical-issue.31193/
Then you have not correctly copied the files over to your safe installation. Copy everything except the "Assets" and "Content" folders. Additionally you may need to copy "Assets\Kuju\RailSimulatorCore" over.
