It’s not possible as the distance always appears to take into account your height off the ground in the cab which is at least 1.5m, probably more in some of the US locos.
For some shunting services, it will read 0.000 yd even if you are just close. Most recently I noticed this on Carlisle trip workings, but there are other examples. In regards to scheduled passenger stops, it is possible to get 0.000 yd, but pretty rare from what I can tell. I managed it a couple of times in years of playing, once at Moulsecoomb and once again at Northfleet. Of course we all know that the stop marker doesn't necessarily line up with where a realistic stop would be, but for anyone who is trying to attempt the 0.000 yd stop, I can tell you that it can be done.
I’ll have to check with my brain and get back to you on that one… In any event, for someone like myself who usually stops 30m short or overshoots the platform it’s a bit OCD for me!
Three decimal places isn’t necessary for the readout because 0.001 would be around a millimetre for a yard (or exactly a millimetre for a metre). The stop markers on the routes aren’t even placed that accurately. Like most things in the debrief screen, the decimal places can be ignored.
After breakfast this morning, I noticed that my weight had increased by 0.415 lbs instead of the usual 0.412 lbs. I immediately called my doctor and he advised me to add 3.6 yds to my morning run/walk. Using my trusty walk- meter, I was able to stop at the exact +3.6 mark and that did the trick when I got home and hit the bathroom scale again. I checked the internet and the Wise One told me that 0.003 lbs was the exact weight of a single raisin. Let me tell you I am now carefully counting those rascals in every bowl of cereal I eat. You can't be too careful these days.
Further to my earlier comment, I had to give my brain a firm “tea and biscuits” talking to after it turned out it might not have scrutinised the pictures. An improvement plan for future conduct has been put in place alongside the final warning.
Here's a screenshot showing an actual 0.000 yd non-shunting stop. It's from 3¼ years ago. As you can see, my level was 142. It's 1200+ now, and I think I've done this 2 or 3 more times since, but I haven't found the screenshots. Spoiler: Here's a 0.001 yd one from last November though. I had to make a new profile for TSW2, so the level doesn't make sense.
I'm sure it is. Even trying to do little hops with a stop-and-lurch strategy, trying to control a train to a millimeter-level of accuracy would need cartoon physics.
