    Morning all...

I keep looking at the Woodhead railway in blue DLC pack... I want it, but then I read the reviews & it puts me off... Then after a while I want it again & then I get put off... This cycle has been going on for ages & I just can't make my mind up... Are the frame rates really as bad & is it unplayable as what people make out???

The only thing that's going for it at the moment is that I can get it for £4.54 as opposed to its sale price of £7.19 as I have a small balance remaining off a steam gift card which the good lady bought me at Christmas...

    Thanks in advance...

    Eric

It got off to a bad start with many, including me, getting crashes around Mancs. It has since been fixed but still fps drops in that area.
It is a nice route and I like the the 76 and 506 and the 08 that comes with it.
    For £4.54 I'd take a punt.

I live in the Manchester area and I used to work over the route as a Guard but there are so many faults that I don't play the route.
The locos and units are nice but overly scripted.
Signalling is rubbish with loads of errors.
Missing track in the Ardwick area stopping trans off the Woodhead line accessing other parts of the station.

I suppose at £4.54 you might like it.

Is it perfect? Nope. Is it worth the money? At less than a fiver, absolutely. Does it run well? Well... it's one of the most frame rate demanding routes, but I manage around 20fps with a 10 year old sandybridge CPU and a 5 year old GX980 running at 2560x1600. So unless you've got something REALLY crap it should run OK.

Thanks to everyone who replied... I took a punt and bought it, at just under a fiver I couldn't really go wrong...

I have it and really like it. Ok it might not be perfect with detail, as Peter mentioned. The 506 EMU with no speedometer is something else, and the 76 is great to try your skills on.

    Great stuff!

The 76 with ‘a face that only a mother could love’ is a great challenge, and learning to use the regenerative braking.

Certainly you need to read the included manual for the 76, and there’s more info here:

I like them both, even though the 1950's period one must be ten years old now it still oozes atmosphere and can be a challenge to drive especially in a steam engine. They are not perfect but certainly in a sale are well worth it. The stock in the BR blue one is very well done.

    Thanks for the pointer Inver...

Don't s'pose you know where I can get the said manual from??? By all accounts, the manual was made for the 76 but it was never distributed with the DLC for some bizzare reason...!!!

    Thanks Peter...

I haven't got time to read it now as I'm getting ready for work but do you know if the manual written by Edward Fisk??? I believe he's the man who did all the work on upgrading the 76...

And in \railworks\Manuals\EN you will find Woodhead Electric Railway in Blue Manual EN.pdf
which has info on the route, the Class 506 and the Class 76 locos.

PTGRail in YouTube has a video driving the EM1. It is typically clear and detailed to the point of being pedantic.

I luv them both, of course, the older Woodhead route has a lot of very handy scenery assets, particulalrly industrial buildings, mills, etc, which folks have utilised on freeware routes for the 1950s/60s time period, especially UK steam loco layouts, so, very useful to have that route anyway for the assets.

    Cheerz. Steve.
