    I remember watching a pair of 40s going through similar troubles, back in their final days, after being stabled for almost a month. Diesel locos, particularly of that generation, didn't like to be stood around doing nothing for extended periods.

    What are the clouds of white? Condensate, oil smoke, unburnt diesel? If it's mostly condensate, then not too environmentally damaging.
