…about getting Train Sim World 4 for my Xbox Series X. How have past Train Sim games performed on Xbox? Are there any major issues with performance/audio etc? Seen a few posts mentioning the audio is not great on Xbox and that the game freezes quite a bit.
Haven’t had any crashes on series x for a long time, I think the last I was just on the main menu (most common point) so no loss of progress. I ain’t an expert on train sounds, but I still notice good sounds (at least they sound good to me anyways) and when something seems off to me, I get a bit of both of these depending on train. I think it really depends on how much you notice them how bad it is tbh. I think the horn loop being very noticeable when you hold it in is meant to be an Xbox sound related issue but I don’t notice a great deal more. load times a quite decent (not a great deal far from instant) I have most of the content available if that helps acknowledge that as-well.
Sound quality is on par with other Xbox games the game crashes very infrequently no more than any other Xbox game. I always have a save handy just in case. some of the newer routes have a bit of a stuttering issues … it’s a little annoying but most likely won’t be overly frustrating the game is a bit quirky at times but that’s part of its charm. On one route sometimes the cars will pop up riding over a bridge before the bridge pops up. Again nothing horrible xsx is an amazing machine I’ve enjoyed hundreds of hours of tsw on it. I love the game
It used to have a really bad jackhammer issue but that’s long gone. One of the engines on one of the routes makes a little bit of an odd sound. I play with headphones on with the sound very loud. It’s fine
Apparently the Xbox audio has been bad in TSW3 on Xbox (I don't play with headphones so never noticed it). As for performance, I wouldn't say it freezes. Maybe a micro pause here and there when a scenery block loads, but it's not that bad. It's the fluctuation of FPS from 60-40 over and over that makes the background jitter quite a bit (on TSW3 routes, not older ones). If it doesn't make you sick, then go for it.
I upgraded to an XSX and it’s been great especially with a 4K TV and soundbar for added bass to make the room rumble! Load time is so quick on every step. Only minor issues is draw distance on track in front of you, but that’s been discussed elsewhere. Glad I’ve upgraded console
Do you have game pass? Try it out if you have. I had many arguments with users about the audio. Some say the audio is fine. I don't agree with them.
I’m not sure how people are saying the audio is fine, on most trains it is pretty bad. Performance is fine, so long as you’re not someone that demands 4k 120fps all the time.
TSW3 runs very well on XSX. Loads fast and has never crashed on me. Stuttering is very rare compared ro PS5. The only thing is the sound looping at times.
Poor sounds on Xbox series x and lots of stuttering. I’d get a series s if tsw if what your most interested in getting an upgraded experience
Here’s a link to the previous thread on Xbox audio issues. Hope it helps https://forums.dovetailgames.com/threads/xbox-audio.59043/
Don’t take my advice and especially don’t let the toxic element disused you. Listen to a stream on YouTube have a go at game pass or something. there’s also the “this engine is no good because one of the fans is two centimeters to the left of where it should be” or the “this engine is no good because the sound it makes doing x isfor this version of it” you know the type of railfan perfectionist I mean ?
I have a Series X, a PS5, and a PC, so I can directly compare. The straight no-BS answer is: TSW2 - sound was bad on Xbox (looping, jackhammer effect) but was eventually fixed. Then a couple of months later we got… TSW3 - sound bad again on Xbox (this time very poor quality audio) and has never been fixed TSW4 - ??? I would hold off and read Xbox player reports before buying As you see it’s been a rough ride for Xbox players (and PS5 but that’s another story). If the TSW4 Xbox sound is still borked, might I suggest chaining oneself to the railings in front of Dovetail HQ, and going on hunger strike until they fix it!
I also have TSW3 on PC, PS5 and XBox Series X. PC is the better version for me. XBox in second place almost as good as the PC version very few stutters. I haven’t seen any game freezes. PS5 in third place purely because the frame rate is the worst of the 3 on some of the routes. Plus it took an awful long time to fix the 64 gig issue. I personally don’t have an issue with XBox sound, I only notice it is worse when playing on headphones where the looping becomes very obvious in some cases, but I rarely use headphones and it sounds fine to me through speakers. So the conclusion is as above try TSW3 on Gamepass while you still can. Obviously for some people the sound is a problem and if it’s likely to bother you then be cautious. My main issue with Xbox is the lack of sales rather than any issue with the game itself.
I'm really curious about the audio still because something must be off with how audio is set up in TV's or soundbars. What you describe I had on speakers. I never tried it with headphones but I notice most people hear it with headphones so I'm really curious why my TV set up would differ from other TV set ups. I had this on two different TV and two different soundbars. Sounded completely the same but others only hear it on headphones.
I have to say some routes are better than others. Theres still a lot of very distorted AWS alarms on modern units and the class 20 sometimes has an annoying crackle. The horns on some of the units also distorts but I've found the older routes seem to sound better for the most part Its a bit frustrating but I've learnt to live with it as DTG can't seem to find an issue with volume and gain levels etc. Otherwise performance wise I have no issues on series S. Some newer routes have a little framerate drop but otherwise its perfectly playable audio is big for some people but I still enjoy the game As an example I've put this video up multiple times so will link it again
Hmm. Yes. The sound is definitely distorted on the Xbox Series X. Encountered it pretty much straight away when trying the game on Game Pass. Might have to get it on my PS5 instead, although from what I’ve read, the PS5 version isn’t well optimised.
Despite what we were told back when native gen 9 support was added, according to new information there are slight differences between console builds for (hard-coded) graphics settings. The draw distance on the PS5 build is apparently further out than on the Series X, which explains why the former struggles to maintain a decent frame rate. As for the longer loading times on PS5, the culprit may be the inaptly named "Add-on Manager". <sarcasm>For TSW4, Xbox and PC will also have the privilege of Add-on Manager, so that's something to look forward to.</sarcasm>
TSW2 & TSW3 have generally run pretty well on my Series X. The only issues of note have been a stuttering frame rate at times and some odd repeating audio glitches, although the latter usually resolve if I switch to another view and then back again. Oh, and a lack of DLC discounts on XBOX compared with other platforms which is a big bugbear of mine.... I've attached a Razer Turret wireless keyboard to my XBOX which greatly increases my enjoyment of the game as it gives me access to keyboard shortcuts which definitely increase the immersion versus trying to click small fiddly cockpit controls using the gamepad.
In that case I suggest waiting for reviews and decide on that. I asked if changes had been made and they basically didn't do any changes regarding the audio issues I was having on Xbox. On PS5 the audio issue is not present. I don't know about optimisation as I played TSW3 on a Series S
It’s weird. Definitely noticeable on the 465 on SEHS Extended (AWS and door chimes). The train itself seemed to sound OK. Was getting a weird sort of lag moving from the different controls too. It was a fresh install so might not have settled down?
The initial load time on the PS5 was there before addon manager existed so hopefully that won't cause the problem for other platforms. I've very much got in the habit of booting the game and then going to make a drink, once you're in the actual game it all runs fine without loading delays. Frame rate is more stable on Series X, the PS5 hovers in the mid 50s and stutters frequently, but the image is a lot clearer on PS5, both suffer from extensive pop in but the trees in particular resolve to a much sharper image on PS5, to the extent I had to check the 4K mode was even switched on on the Series X. I just tried putting the camera alongside the 465 and in addition to the awful sounding AWS alarms the Xbox also has what I can only describe as an electronic under water noise coming from the train, also while the Xbox version stutters a lot less, when it does the sound briefly cuts out too, which never happens on PS5. In potentially better news, on last week's stream they said Xbox beta testers reported the Xbox audio was much better, but DTG haven't actually changed anything so fingers crossed it's a bug that somehow squashed itself, which is quite possible considering they never understood why it got worse between TSW2 and TSW3.
Graphic is decent, driving style and physic is toyish, but it only choice for xbx, so not much can be done if you like trains...
I wonder why the sound issues haven’t been addressed on Xbox Series X. Hearing that distortion has put me off using the game on that console for sure. I am now researching the game on PS5.
TSW3 is a somewhat challenging game performance wise across the board it seems. I’ve played it on PS5, Xbox S and X. A few points: 1. Performance is best on Series X. It seems to have the best overall frame rates in all situations. PS5 noticeably a bit lower FPS in some areas (especially stations with busy passengers). Series S has lowest overall FPS but still very playable. 2. Regardless of FPS all platforms seem to have a momentary stutter from time to time as you are travelling along which is related to the game loading the next scenery tile apparently. 3. Xbox version has a weird issue with audio compression. Specifically I notice it with dings and warnings in the cab (ie AWS alarms). They don’t sound as good as PS5. But other sounds (engine, track noise etc) aren’t noticeably different. 4. Freezes and crashes don’t seem to be a major issue on either of them. I’ve had a few here and there but nothing common or repeatable. A lot better than it was a few years ago on TSW2/London Commuter for sure.
This makes a lot of sense. I specifically noticed a difference between the Xbox and PS5 when it comes to how it handles texture quality at further distance. You can see it with video examples in my thread from a few months back: https://forums.dovetailgames.com/th...d-blurry-texture-issue-on-unit-numbers.64833/
Crashes on PS5? I only had one crash so far and it was on MML. It made me realise how much the game was improved as on PS4 sending crash reports was a regular thing. My PS5 only has send 1 crash report so far to DTG. From what I heard about MML it's due to that route. So TSW3 has become rather crash free on PS5
Worth noting that if you’re on PS5 you can check the error logs. It doesn’t confirm the game title on all of them but it will for most. In the 5/6 months I’ve owned TSW3 I’ve had 7 confirmed crashes.
Settings > System > Error History Yeah some don’t have the app names on them, I just found the ones that say they were TSW 3.
I’ve pre-ordered TSW 4 on my PS5. Audio is more important to me than an initial slow loading time and a few stutters.
Yup, this is why I purchase all my TSW bits on PS5. The Xbox sounds are wretched compared to the PS, the slightly more consistent FPS ain’t worth it. Every now & then I’ll pick a DLC up on Xbox to try out, as Microsoft will refund you once every few months.
DTG Matt DTG Alex do you happen to know if there is any progress towards the possible Xbox sound improvement that you have mentioned before. I know it was a big job and possible memory usage affects etc…, but I’m just curious as to whether this is still something that’s being looked into as I’m trying to decide whether to purchase an Xbox or upgrade the PC? Thank you
I run TSW 4 on Xbox Series x, Samsung 55" 4K TV with Samsung Soundbar & to be honest I've found the sound fine along with performance.
the horn on many of the trains is one of the most stand out from the sound issues I believe, many of them the loop repeat is very obvious (some of them only take about a second or 2 before they loop)
PS5 gets a better draw/render distance, whereas XSX gets slightly better FPS as it is rendering less scenery, at the expense of less distant scenery (ie mountains) and increased pop in - due to the Xbox build having to be scaled back to run on series S.
I don’t even have my addons on the internal storage now so I ain’t taking really any advantage on series x, along with Xbox core issues, it’s safe to say PS5 is superior with this game at least, and that’s coming from a long term Xbox user.
I also noticed that on the Xbox some text like unit numbers on the trains and some signs are blurrier until you move the camera closer, where on PS5 they stick to the high detail version for longer. The Xbox version also loads slightly faster. The PS5 loads sloooooooooow. Slowest game to boot that I've ever played. The Xbox one is slow too actually just faster than PS5.
Depends what you value. I have both and lately play/buy DLC on Xbox more because I prefer the slightly smoother gameplay over the slightly better visuals. But overall they are pretty close.
Thanks to gamepass I do pick up the odd DLC on Xbox, as it’s more refund friendly than PSN, useful for the iffy DLC’s. I will say that as someone who mainly plays on PS5, the audio issue on Xbox is the most noticeable issue. I think the texture issue is something that’s spreading, I’ve noticed on PS5 that when I switch between external & internal views a few times, the cab textures turn to mush.
Value would be In visuals I would say, performance and hardware is there to be used to better the games quality in my view. not having the addons on internal also really slows the game load times down but the cost of internal storage is worth value over the odd extra minute for the game to load. then theirs the core issue which I find essential, PlayStation PC mostly dodging such things to the point Xbox isn’t winning in any regard there.
trust me if you don’t like the cab textures having a quick nosedive there’s always the Z-fighting to “enjoy” permanently on many trains on Xbox as part of the core issues of the system. it drives me up the wall long before the sound will
I've been playing on XBX since July. On the whole, it's a really good experience. There are some issues, which are covered above - mainly Z-buffering problems with certain textures, occasional very brief freezes and the audio sampling issue (which isn't universal across all routes) - but I really wouldn't let that put you off if you are interested in driving trains on your console.
