Hello, Unreal Engine 4.22 has now the ability to render real-time ray tracing shadows. Have a look at this presentation: The most important news is said at around minute "12:01": "If you've got ray-traced shadows on an outdoor environment, there is no maximum shadow range. You will never see the shadows fade out in the distance..." So finally with UE 4.22, we could get rid of this annoying issue: Shadow distance by metr0p0litain posted Mar 17, 2019 at 2:02 PM
There is a better and cheaper way to do this with Distance Field Soft Shadows. Keep in mind that DTG uses a modified version of Unreal engine 4 so they would have to merge DXR features into it.
That demo with the subway passing though the station looks spectacular. I would love to see these functionalities added in TSW.
It does look amazing, but as Tomas9970 said, the folks at DTG use a modified version of UE4, so any updating/merging that they do is probably a big headache each time.
Big headache or not they need to update ASAP, they also need to back date all core game/other DLC to match the new DLC
they are still using a broken version of UE4, there have been many updates and fixes to the engine since 4.16 that would probably solve a lot of issues here, like sound bugs and performance for example.
Matt P explained since TSW is using a highly modified version of the UE engine, it isn’t an easy operation. All the custom coding to the engine would have to be re-evaluated with possible major overhaul to the work arounds in place. Changing foundational elements could cause knock on affects to all the DLC. Before such an involved project is undertaken, the benefits of what the new engine would provide versus the cost of doing so must be calculated. As a Cyber-security consultant, I am constantly working with companies that have systems based on Windows XP since those system are running highly customized applications and/or in highly regulated industries were system certifications are required. The cost to upgrade is prohibitive so these old system carry on.
would be happy if they could patch out the annoying sound-space bugs affecting some routes worse than others, its been 2 years since launch and still the same old glitches. Does not show much respect for the customer base that is feeding you to ignore such things for so long. ergo, no communication on this issue = no more £'s from me for addons, would hope others will do the same, vote with your wallets!
While fixes are not coming as fast as many want, they have been providing updates- such as the improvements to RSN PBZ, the fixes to the diesel electric simulations for GWR, and CSX HH with the diesels on NEC supposedly in Q&A for release soon. So to say they are ignoring the customers is a bit disingenuous as of late. That being said, I do hope they get to the sound niggles soon.
The engine really needs to be updated. The improvements to sound and physics are worth it and can be seen in other games
Yes I play a game that has been upgraded from UE4 4.16 to 4.21 and it night and day, so much better, and good fps increase and so much better looking graphics, sounds and physics, I expect 4.22 would be even better, however having only a small team it would take them months to complete as it breaks so many things, but worth it in the end
