I might explore and revamp my Amtrak Auto Train Project i tried many years ago during the early period of TS. Not sure if many people remember those postings on Railworks America but it was fun doing it. Especially the shunting with the Switcher putting the cars together, but because of issues with the game and computer, it never got completed for Alpha release.

Welp, these achievements' names pretty much confirms Caltrain, as well as the F40PH. Pulled from SteamDB. Going to assume SFJ means San Francisco - Jose (Diridon) --- Correct me if I'm wrong

Oh wow, cool. So yep, looks like Caltrain! I thought we would be getting an MP36, already had a few ideas for routes that could used repainted versions of that, oh well- guess that's why you don't plan too far ahead, lol.

The F40PH is a classic, great news! Also gallery cars will be interesting :P

The "Move any mountain" achievement says that there will be freight as well.

An easier to read version of the achievements:
    caltrain achievement.PNG

We've also got achievements which aren't grey this time as well.

No, Amtrak does not run on the Peninsula corridor, although all the commuter equipment is double decked. In fact, the passenger cars that run with the F40's are gallery cars- look it up, it's an interesting arrangement. Still not sure what makes superliners in particular so special.

Superliners are special because of their interesting arrangement especially compared to trains in europe.

Amtrak does actually run on a small part of Peninsula Corridor.

Amtrak's Coast Starlight only runs between Santa Clara and Gilroy (where it doesn't stop). If the dlc code of 'SFJ' means San Francisco - San Jose, then only 2.6 miles of the line would have Amtrak on it, meaning that it is highly unlikely any Amtrak will ever be added to this route.

Also, the exact variant of the F40PH to be included is the F40PH-2CAT, based off of the terrible jokes in the achievements...

415 (Four One Five achievement) is the telephone area code for San Francisco, if we need any further confirmation.

I'm actually getting a bit more excited for this route (assuming there's freight too- there will be, right???), as i never played the version in TS20XX. I'm just glad it's not Pacific Surfliner.

Sounds pretty good. My knowledge of US railroading is way less than my knowledge of that of the UK but a San Francisco route sounds very appealing. I'm guessing the golden gate bridge is visible on a part of the route?

Not really, no. I did double-check on Google Earth, but that's kind of on the other side of downtown to begin with.

While I'm at it, I'll predict the rest of the rolling stock. First off, the passenger cars will almost certainly be the gallery cars, as the F40's are seen pulling these much more often then the bombardier coaches and they're also painted to match.

Freight is a bit more open to speculation, though. Usually, any given DTG route contains 2 new and 1 reused driving cab, SO I think the freight loco will be reused. Could be a GP38-2 or a GP40-2 in that case, but not much else.

New UK route for TS is 35 miles long and features SWT branding. Could be the next TSW route once we get caltrain and tsw2020

Looking forward to driving the CalTrain, must say the actual route is quite bland and boring from what I’ve seen on YouTube but a new route is a new route.

    Gilroy to San Francisco

Thanks for sharing this. Looks pretty interesting to me. I'm assuming the video is shot from the bi-level cabcar?

It's a lot more urban/industrial than i was expecting (good IMO as i get bored by miles and miles of trees). Looked like a couple of switchers and some kind of "bullet nosed" engine parked up in the CalTrain facility north of San Jose....i wonder if they'll be in the game? Future loco DLC perhaps?

Also saw an Amtrak California train passing southbound.....not sure what that is, exactly, as i'm only familiar with east coast Amtrak. Is it like a regional service?

Can't resist noting that nearly all of the threads on this forum include "baseless speculation" in various size doses. Too bad all of those posts can't be automatically moved here!

    In order: 1) Yes, cabcar.

    2) Caltrain owns a couple of MP15DC's, and the "bullet nose" engine is an MP36PHI (no relation to the MP15). The MP15DC is totally unrelated to the SW1000R released recently, so it's unlikely it'll be in the game. The MP36 has a high chance of being DLC. As there's no achievement regarding the MP36, I'm guessing it's out of the base game.

    3) The only real Amtrak service that would be seen on (I'm guessing) San Jose to San Francisco is a brief glimpse of the Coast Starlight. No idea why Amtrak California equipment is up there.

Looking into the achievements, it looks like three are geared exclusively to the F40PH-CAT (Purr-fect, Run Cat Run, Four One Five). All the rest are "general" achievements. I'm surprised that there aren't any geared towards freight specifically, except perhaps "Moving Mountains", which would confirm UP presence, but there also isn't anything to show that there isn't any freight, either.

So at this point, we can reasonably assume that it is a line from San Francisco to San Jose, and there will be at least the F40PH-CAT and bilevel cab cars to operate.

What we can speculate is that the MP36 may be included, or may be a later DLC pack (likely). I'm going to say that DTG will include a UP GP38/40 for small freight assignments, as they included in the TS20xx version, as well as TSW's Northeast Corridor, with the generic freight cars reskinned for UP for the token freight assignments.

Thanks for the info! The Amtrak California consist might have been south of San Jose as the video starts from Gilroy- will have to go back and check. FWIW, there was also a string of 3 Geeps (2 UP, 1 GATX), on a station siding in that same video.

Just checked the Wikipedia for CalTrain and it seems like there are two different types of passenger rolling stock. One is a Nippon Sharyo type that looks like something from Metra in Chicago:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Northbound_train_at_Millbrae_station,_January_2011.jpg

and another is a BiLevel that looks more like something from Miami:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:San_Mateo_Station_3112_04.JPG

    ____________

Hopefully the future MP36 has the other type of rolling stock that isn't included with the F40. Also checked out that YouTube video linked above and although there's a lot of double tracked sections, there are a lot of nice unique landmarks along the route like the light rail and BART, not to mention some nice parts where you follow along a river closer to San Fran. Even the double tracked sections have some nice variety where it isn't just trees all the time, there are some industries spread along the route and also elevated sections. Also at Bayshore, looks like there's some good distant hill scenery filled with houses, which hopefully DTG captures, instead of just hills filled with nothing like NTP.

Almost certainly it will come with the Nippon Sharyo coaches, not the Bombardier ones. Those go with the MP36's. They were actually purchased for a specific Caltrain express service, even if over time they ended up being used for all of them. As such, they have different paint schemes, and the engines rarely mix. The F40PH's go with the shiny Nippon Sharyo stock.

I think it was a good idea to do this actually, unlike TS19 wheere they base route has the MP36's and the DLC has the F40PH's. Not only were the F40PH's and gallery cars (Nippon Sharyo cars) built first and for all services (not just express), but the MP36 and Bombardier coaches works well as a loco DLC because it can add the express trains as additional services.

It would be disappointing if it didn't. But then again who knows how many features this route will have. Maybe the crossing gates will go up and down.

You know this route would also be a great chance to implement AI train horn use at crossings. A good chance for me to drain the air tanks as well lol.

No, the Altamont Corridor Express goes north east from San Jose to Stockton whilst Caltrain goes north west to San Francisco.

"Moving mountains" is probably related to moving something very heavy which is surely not a passanger train.

Maybe a "high and wide" run. Norfolk Southern does those allot. Not sure about Union Pacific though.

I can't really see DTG modeling an entire extra freight car just for one scenario, and looking at a bunch of videos I can't see any evidence that high and wide moves are common in this area, so I dunno about that, sorry...

Apparently there are a lot of dirt trains. Yes, just dirt. Loaded into hoppers. Honestly I didn't even know dirt by rail was a thing. That sounds like a good reason for the achievement.

My burning question with the freight operations is how much of the industrial branch trackage around the area will be included? Will we see the Redwood City branch? The stuff around South San Francisco Yard? Will we see street running in TSW (Redwood City branch has some)? I've always found industrial switching to be different and more fun than yard switching since you're moving around to different locations, which often have interesting industrial scenery. If that's not included, it would feel like a missed opportunity IMO.

Well dang. Here I was hoping for a huge train car just to learn it to probably be dirt. Dirt will be a interesting experience though. I really like industrial switching as well.

Worth mentioning that the dirt comes in on a unit train pulled by big AC mainline power, but since it's only one train and DTG would have already hit there 3 driving cab limit with the F40PH, cab car, and geep (used a lot more, would have to be included first), that probably won't be included since it runs so infrequently.

I'm super excited for Caltrain! I'm a big fan of US commuter operations, so this one is right up my alley. I've ran the TSxx Peninsula Corridor up and down dozens of times using the F40ph-CAT and gallery cars, so it'll be great to have a shiny new incarnation of the route to relearn.

Unless they just convert the ac4400cw to look like Union Pacific. But then that would be four.

Given that they'd have to make it work on consoles, too (extra work), I don't really see that happening

Oh yeah. I was working in a yard in St. Louis ten years ago, when a bunch of gondolas rolled by with a radioactive placard on their sides. Whole unit train of it, about 60-70 cars. I asked what it was about, and one of the guys said that it was "dirty dirt" from the Manhattan Project. Turns out some of the Manhattan Project work was done in the area, and they were finally clearing it out. There was only trace amounts of radiation, but it was enough to send a train of dirt to a quarantine area.

UP had a number of mudslides in Oregon a few years ago, and they were running unit trains of debris out of the area. All loaded into MOW gondolas.

Okay, now that's just awesome! Radioactive contamination is cool... kind of...

In fact, I think that's actually the kind of train the Peninsula Corridor got, doing a bit more research.

I've heard of radioactive trains rolling through US without an actual destination, because there is no "endstorage facility". That's a myth, isn't it?

Given we’ve pretty much worked out the new US route will be CalTrain, San Francisco - San Jose, does anyone know what speeds we will be driving at on this route? There does seem to be quite a lot of stops en route which I would assume means a lower speed with the odd faster sections between the stops further away.

The top speed of the route is 79mph irl and with the relatively slow acceleration of the commuter diesels, you won't necessarily get to the line speed between every stop.

Since I heard the Caltrain from San Francisco to San Jose will come to TSW I am very excited. The F40PH is an impressive locomotive. It is so tall. The area beside the tracks looks interesting. A good mix between urban industrial and urban green. I hope there will be UP freight action too. Even if DTG reuse the rolling stock from CSX. And please with a bit more power than the GP 40. Thank you in advance DTG.
