The gents in the #44830 Black 5 take a breather waiting for the fire brigade at Guildford on a Portsmouth Direct Line rail tour
A preserved ex LMS 4F 0-6-0 steam loco works a steam excursion across the Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle route.
A pair of B&LE Santa Fe's thunder through Meadville Junction during the fall of 1928 with a fresh load of iron ore from Conneaut. Route Used: Bessemer & Lake Erie Locomotive Used: B&LE Santa Fe
A US Army S160, on loan to the New Haven Railroad, heads up a high speed mail train during the summer of 1954. Route Used: VNHRR Springfield Line Locomotive Used: USATC S160
It's 1961, and steam is slowly being edged out on the UK network. Here at Carlisle, we see (from left to right) a 6MT Clan with the down Royal Scot, a Class 37 is waiting to take over a London-bound train from Stranraer over the Western Lines of Scotland from another 6MT, and a Black 5 is sitting awaiting clearance for a run over the Settle-Carlisle line to Leeds.
The climb to Lands Viaduct over the River Gaunless is, topping out at 1:28, probably the hardest section of the Weardale & Teesdale network of lines, but this K1 has more than enough power to crest the grade - the driver's next challenge will be keeping the train from running away down the equally steep gradient to Barnard Castle and later Penrith.
Southern Pacific Cab Forward #4235, passes thru Port Chicago in the early morning. Route: Sacramento Northern: Suisun Bay – San Francisco Route
The down Torbay Express, with a Castle Class locomotive at the head, approaches Dawlish on the Riviera Line in the Fifties Route.
A SAR Class 24 crossing the Kaaimans River Bridge on the Cape Gauge (3 ft 6 in) Outeniqua Choo Tjoe route in South Africa.
The imfamous Big Boy 4014 blasts through Sherman Hill. Enjoy and good luck all of you guys and gals submitting!
Per the rules - I know a GP9 can produce a lot of exhaust, but it doesn't quite qualify for the theme "Steam Era". Also, each screenshot would need to be its own post with the route and locomotive name.
Manifest Destiny Union Pacific 116 is chugging along at a blazing 35 miles per hour with a loaded train of rails heading to the end of the line just 10 miles away on the Cheyenne 1869 route.
LMS 5XP Jubilee Class #45696 "Arethusa" going 60+ mph along the WCML, on a express service to Carlisle, on the Western Lines of Scotland route.
A King Class visits the Settle-Carlisle Line for the people to see Collett's marvelous creation and also for the extra work on the LMS Engines.
A Union Pacific challenger, one of the most successful modern steam locomotives of all time, thunders toward Speer Junction on the Sherman Hill route at sunset. These Challengers were of the last steam power on the Union Pacific, the last being retired in 1959. Route: Sherman Hill Loco: Union Pacific Challenger
I know that Buynot's awesome FEF-3 screenshot is still on the loading screen but I wanted to share mine as well. This was my first successful run of the FEF-3 on Sherman Hill after many, many tries. It was awesome! Route: Sherman Hill Loco: Union Pacific FEF-3
Union Pacific No. 119 just left Cheyenne on the Cheyenne 1869 route (included with the locomotive), crossing a small stream.
Very very tough choice it was guys, there are at least five screenshots that we shortlisted, but had to choose one. We are givin a win to Brutalist Ape because their screenshot more than any other points at the era where steam trains were prevalent. Congratulations!
