Many years ago while fishing off a lift bridge in the swale, on a eerie winters evening.
From where we was standing you could see right down the straight section of track leading away from swale station. We could hear the sound of banging and clattering in the distance. It was what sounded like a gang doing maintenance on the railway. As the evening drew on, the sound was getting closer and closer although no one could be seen!
Then we could hear the sound of a train approaching in the distance, and as it got closer the driver sounded the horn. To warn the gang working on the tracks we assumed? I looked across and for a brief moment I could see dimly light figure of someone standing on the track Infront of the train! Before I could say anything it was gone!
After the train passed over the bridge and into the distance there was a eerie silence, my friends thought I was joking when I told them about the figure on the track although they couldn't deny the silence that replaced the banging and clattering.
After 20 mins or so curiosity got the better of us and we decided to take a walk to where I thought i saw the figure. Nothing! Not a person to be seen.

That's not the only time strange happenings have happened around that bridge. Another winters evening, only this time in thick fog. Standing on the platform at queenborough. Sometimes if the wind is blowing in the right direction you can hear the train passing over the lift bridge and that evening we did indeed hear the clatter clatter as a train passed over the bridge. We had been standing on the platform for a while and no trains had passed heading towards the mainland, so it could only have been a train heading in our direction. The train was due any minute now so we waited and waited and waited but the train didn't arrive. Several minutes later the pis changed from on-time to cancelled. In the hour we waited for the next train we never did hear the sound of a train passing back over the bridge, just the sound of the next train that arrived a few minutes after hearing it. We asked the ticket inspector what had happened to the previous train and he said it never left Sittingbourne and it was still sitting at the far end of the platform with a fault. You have to wonder that if the train was stuck at Sittingbourne, why did the pis read on time?
