If it’s a “forced lock out”, care to explain why the Free Starter Pack isn’t a good incentive? I think it’s a brilliant way to bring people to the game.

 

I don't know how it's taking a full week for you to do it I'm on PS5 and use my phones hotspot for Internet and it took me like a day

EA Sports….i mean DTG have to make a profit, pay their staff etc, let’s face it, we ALL knew this was coming, no surprise really. Let’s hope the new routes and rolling stock live up to the recent ATS and JT standards.

 

I assume you DIDN'T get TSW5 for free when it came out?

If upgrading the game for free, then paying for only one core route, or one route that's due to be released on the new version of TSW later on down the line (you would literally be paying for only the route, and not the game) is considered a forced lockout, then I seriously don't really know what to tell you.

 

Also keep in mind that you don't have to download and install it during the free window, just claim it into your library.

It’s not the price. It’s the forced upgrade path.

1. yes they give a time window to get it for free. That time window is designed to make you download the product for fear of having to pay later, however it doesn’t offer anything other than unlock updates.

2. All the content I have in tsw5 is still here. Fine. If I don’t want to move though, content that I had bought in THIS VERSION will have further updates and extensions coming to the next version. So I will be locked out of them even though they already exist in this version. Again it’s forcing you to come along for the journey.

3. Content promised for this version, is now content for the next version and so on and so forth. That’s bad faith and poor on the consumer. Again forcing you to upgrade.

It’s not that it’s free it’s that it’s forced. Not to mention you have to download everything again, there’s no guarantee it will all work and play nice, content is usually missing or not available (last year I was waiting for content I had bought for several days to access).

It’s a massive waste of resources for the sake of advertisement. Those resources should go into continually improving the core game and better quality content. Instead it’s going into a new soundtrack, graphics, marketing and features no one will care about because the game has unresolved issues.

Don’t even get me started on gen 8 support. Already this year they cut content and left issues in gen 9 because they say the system can’t handle them yet they continue to support a dead platform. It’s just a constant cash grab. It doesn’t make any sense other than it’s because they are trying to glean every penny from wherever they can. Are future routes going to run on gen 8? Frankfurt and Manchester don’t. So what’s the point?

Im utterly fed up of this company. It’s a shame it’s the only console train sim out there. Stuff is unfinished, not tested, kicked down the road and people just lap it up.

Cities and towns in the UK have had telecoms upgraded. Rural areas on the other hand are still using decades old technology! Bt are charging 30+ a month for upto 100mbps where I live, realistically it's 1mbps if that!
EE (BT) on the other hand charge 20 a month for 1gbps 5g. It's fast enough.

 

What about Caltrain contents?

 

As I remarked elsewhere yesterday, we finally had our fibre optic broadband update done on Monday. It’s definitely faster but Steam still topping out at around 16MB/s which will still mean it takes a while to download the content. DTG have had 12 months to research this, talk to Steam, Sony and MS about a workable pain free method to transfer content across and spare customers the hassle we have endured the last two or three years.

One thing I would suggest this time around, is some sort of pre load which at least means we can be up and running with TSW6 on Day One, not after waiting around for the content to download.

 

I don't know why steam is so slow. If I download a game on ms store I get much faster downloads.

Yeah you would have thought dtg would have come up with a way for us to DL the dlc update packages instead of downloading the dlc again.

You can preload on the Xbox game app but not steam and epic unfortunately.

 

In the case of Steam, just copy/move the pak files across from the existing TSW5 then patch as necessary to make compatible with the new version. How hard could that be?!

 

That's factually wrong. You don't have to download anything on that time window. The only thing you should do is "purchase" the free starter pack in the time window. You can even do that on your phone, it only takes seconds. Want to stay on TSW 5? Fine! Don't start the download. Want to change to TSW 6 around christmas because there is a new DLC that you really like? Great that you already own the free starter pack - now download it and boom, you can start playing 6 around christmas without paying a cent (of course you have to pay for the DLC then, but that's a different story). Also the free starter pack for TSW 5 was there until 9th of January. So way longer than 30 days.

So you bought/upgraded TSW only for an announced DLC, which has not been released? That sounds very much plucked out of thin air. Nobody is going to upgrade to TSW 6 because the SimTrack loco DLC is now coming for 6, not 5. This is only going to happen, once the loco is actually shortly before release or has been released. And even then again - you don't pay a cent to upgrade to TSW 6 if you are smart enough. You only pay for the new DLC.

Of course that shouldn't happen. But if I now count all the days that I've waited for an Amazon delivery that came days later then initially planned, I'd need a few more hands. Happens. I don't like it. But it's really not the end of the world.

Two things that don't have a lot in common with each other. You know that DTG isn't a one-man-company? The person who makes graphics certaily doesn't have the skills to improve the core game.
Also: if there isn't enough marketing --> less sales --> less cash flow --> how would that open up more ressources to be put into the game? I'm very interested to hear your explainaition, because it seems you're an expert in business administration studies?

How is that a cash grad? It has been communicated which DLCs are or are not going to work with Gen 8. The reduced timetable for FSN has been shown and discussed before release. And there were lots of video reviews out. So if you still see this as cash grad, I'd be curious to find out how exactly you define a cash grab.

 

I doubt we will ever get the answer to that question.

 

I find the opposite. Steam usually downloads full speed, ms store is limited to 200mbps

Unfortunately there's nothing in the roadmap that's got me excited or even mildly interested at the moment, I'll have the free TSW6 upgrade but I will definitely be holding onto my cash until I see what's coming for the new version.

 

You're not the only one. Even if I take the free pack - which is likely unless the UK route is something I want - given Steam's slow downloads and their 6pm release time - playing first day is a no-no.

 

There's no way around it either. Even if you opt to download just tsw6 with the core routes you're likely gonna need to install existing dlc for layers etc.

I don't live that far from dtg's studio. Maybe I should chuck the pc in the car and head down there for a direct transfer.

 

This is what I do.
Add it to my library, then down the line I will install it usually sometime after the biggest bugs have been fixed.

Gotta admit the redownload is annoying. And as someone who owns an ever growing amount of DLC (I buy the majority of content), the download is getting bigger every year.

 

Pushing 400gb of content on my Series X. That's probably going to be an overnight install.

At this rate I might just get my new gaming rig around release date and download everything onto that instead.

 

I just upgraded to a pc from ps5 and was absolutely shocked at how poorly newer TSW routes run. Stuttering like no other game I own. Just like PS5. FPS drops down to single digits at Frankfurt.

Meanwhile I’m running MSFS and space marine 2 at ultra, no issues. No issues with SimRail or derail valley either, or anything else really.

Needless to say, I was expecting massively improved performance going from ps5 to pc, but alas, tsw5 routes are still slideshows.

But I’m hearing that if we drop gen 8, DTG will optimize the game? Well alright, let’s do it. Let’s drop gen 8. Then we can all sit around and talk about how, actually, gen 9 is the problem.

Also, morale of the story for you console players: don’t upgrade to pc just for TSW. You’ll be disappointed. I’m not saying don’t get it, just don’t upgrade solely for TSW. Upgrade because you also want a bunch of other games - chances are, you’ll enjoy them better anyway.

 

It definitely puts the pc thru it's paces. My RGB is connected to temperature, most games it's always green, maybe yellow on a really hot day. Tsw on the other hand it's all red!

 

The caveat to that moral, is it depends on your PC specs. My gaming rig is a bit of a beast with a lot of RAM and a decent GPU, with JetWash mod on Ultra, and I don't have slideshows at either Euston or Frankfurt.

 

Family of 5 and I’m not going to waste my data that I need for university travel, honestly I fail to see why they can’t just do a overwatch 2 and just update the base game and call it something else

 

Guessing slow downloads on Steam is either the internet provider throttling it or a local thing. For me in Switzerland Steam Downloads at my full available bandwidth but at my Dad’s house in the UK it is painfully slow - even a single DLC took over an hour.

The re download is an inconvenience for me, I will keep 5 installed until something entices me to switch and hopefully by then, mods will be working and any serious bugs will be fixed. I doubt there will be serious issues as it’s not a new game, it’s a few extra features in the current game and a change of number.

So long as the core remains free, I wouldn’t say I’m happy, but I’m ok with it.

I think that falls under, if it were really so easy, they'd be doing that, but they aren't, so it isn't. Probably the recooked new binaries are different enough that the patch file would be larger than the actual DLC file, unlike a bugfix that leaves most of the original binary as-is.

I’m feeling cautiously optimistic about TSW6. I just hope there aren’t too many changes to the UI, HUD and controller behaviour as they are the things that wind me up a tad if things become harder or worse when ahem ‘improvements’ are made that don’t actually improve things, like the recent change to what page comes up when you pause, which made things measurably worse on PS5. One press of the wrong button after pausing and you are accidentally restarting your service and the page you wanted to see (that used to come up when you pause) is three more button presses away. Hopefully for TSW6 they think about these things more than they have in the past and thoroughly play test it on a console not just on a PC, where it all works great due to the mouse. If there is an overview page when pausing, don’t make it four button pushes away.

 

Could we please have an option to import our settings from TSW5?

Damn well know that statement is bs. The core update is free so no need to purchase anything except the newer routes if you so desire.

 

The increase in the number of the TSW version is inversely proportional to my hype. The new annual release has become so routine and mediocre that it no longer arouses interest in me, but rather a feeling of annoyance and weariness at the waste of time it will represent to have to download 100+ dlc's again for having the same game with a different UI.

 

You could also be limited by your cpu or storage speeds. Have you tried changing download servers? I find changing between London and Manchester sometimes helps if it’s being particularly slow, though.
Otherwise I’m not sure.

 

Surely this is the year we get steam back into the game

 

Last time (TSW4->TSW5), DTG somehow managed to make things worse on PS5 with weirdly overlapping files that confused both the console and the user (both TSW4 and TSW5 files were shown under TSW5 with indistinguishable names but only the TSW5 files worked, so it was all trial and error while blind). If DTG haven’t fixed this, it’ll evolve into a nightmare going forward.
