There are quite a lot of tools available today that would allow you to drive HUDless, which are all using the API. However, one feature is missing and that is the door closing countdown (or simply the end of the boarding process at a station). No matter what tool you use, you always have to open the HUD at a station to make sure that you are allowed to close the doors.

The only train this is possible (to my knowledge) is the expert 101, as it has the automatic conductor that closed the door for you.

However, especially on commuter trains it would be nice to be able to create an external display that shows you when you are allowed to close the doors (for the Germans it would be an Zp9 indication of some sort). Would be nice if this could be included into the next iteration of the API.
