Why are the BR 146 and BR 185.2 so loud on MSB for electric locomotives and why is the BR 185.5 on RRO so quiet? First time playing RRO today and the BR 185.5 is so pleasant in the cab compared to the din made by the BR 146 and BR 185.2. I just assumed the BR 146 and BR 185.2 were noisy trains (despite being electric) yet the BR 185.5 suggests they needn’t be so loud.
I’ve often wondered this. I can’t imagine them being as loud as they are represented. If they were the drivers would need ear defenders.
It seems most of the noise on these locos is the fan to cool the traction system. The fan can be switched off on the control desk.
