How do you enable AWS in the BR Class 52 Western?

They are between the left hand side of the driver's seat and the wall. You have to do some shenanigans to actually be able to turn them on, if I am not getting confused with something else, you need to:

Be stood up in the cabin > Go into the crouching position > Sit in the driver's seat > Look down to the left and they are selectable.

No problem. You might notice your driver's head sticking out of the roof as a result of the above steps, but if you just stand up again and then sit down from the standing position it should fix it.

If youre using immersion controls, its still possible just a bit more awkward to set the aws. I find getting up then crouching as close as possible between the drivers seat and dashboard helps.

Did these engines use AWS, in real life?

Not certain, but the GWML was one of the first routes fitted with AWS so I assume so.
