I agree with you that free roam has a lot of potential (I mean spawning a train in a timetable), but for now, there are the limitations you mentioned (cannot give instructions except for path, no AP points).

I think it could be great to be able to create scenarios within a timetable, that is, adding one or more services to an existing timetable (the player service plus possibly some others AI).
Yes it could be tricky to do, with dispatching problems sometimes.

But I liked TSC's QuickDrive, perhaps we could recapture the spirit of that mode !

Yes, free roaming the 90s into a timetable for a different route does open up a lot of possibilities, for example taking them over Shap with a loaded freightliner.
