Funny you´d mention this. Guilty as charged: I was one of those. But only until figuring her brake system. And now I´m in love. I think this is one of the most perfectly modeled "locos" in the sim. Carefully detailed and crafted, hardly any bugs, and such a superb sound mix.
I think I'm the same with Steam locos. Tried one yesterday for the first time and who knows... I also want to see some class 8x electrics with tap chargers which were always fun in TSC - and again, added in a complexity you don't get in modern units.
The combination of the braking system and needing to go through gears makes it a bit more complicated than most. I've not driven it in some time, but I do remember finding it quite satisfying when I was starting to get to grips with it.
One thing I am so glad I have with this unit is the raildriver... makes it so much easier to play with the throttle lever, the big lever operating the gears (or the toggle) and being able to reset the brakes just by moving the level to the full release very quickly...
It's a very cool looking bit of kit. No way I could justify the £200+ cost though! The Xbox controller works quite well for iTSW to be fair, so I'll just have to stick with that!!
This is 100% true. There is some kind of issue with ToD4, it happens during sunrise and sunset times, huge FPS drop. I tried a lot of different settings but I found there's a problem with the shadows at that time. If I reduce the shadows quality, the problem is gone instantly. It happens even on a complete cloudy sky.
Sounds like a 'you' problem to me. I found it tricky to start with but as has been said once you get used to it it is lovely to drive. I only buy (or used to) UK stuff and the 101 is like no other, you have to concentrate and drive it. The only thing I would criticise it for is that DTG have over used it and I would love to see the mighty 'Bubble Car'. It is the UK 101. You are right in saying about the RD making it a pleasure to drive, the XBox Elite controller is pretty good as well.
Speaking of UE4 titles with atrocious lod and texture pop, maybe DTG could give Arkane's devs some tips with the benefit of years of experience with the issue, on the looping audio troubles they're likewise having with Redfall XD
It's more of a, it's just not a fun train to drive, of all of the vacum locos, I find it the least responsive and the hardest to control. I also find it pretty ugly and I don't like the glass wall between the driver and the cabin, but that's me. Not really a fan of any of the gen 1s. Maybe it's just the way it's been set up, but itXs not for me. Does seem like it's a common opinion though.
Some of these don’t come down to DTG, they come down to UE4 which is starting to get painfully outdated, DTG need a new game engine
The Class 101 is a marmite train, you either love or it hate it. Both options are equally valid. Pre the RailDriver updated controls I absolutely hated it, but now its possibly one of the most fun trains to drive with the RailDriver.
Personally, I think it's one of the most enjoyable units to drive in TSW. You actually have to pay attention to what you are doing and plan ahead when braking, it's fun developing the skill to drive it. I much prefer the 101 to any modern EMU that has a combined power-brake handle that you stick into notch 4 until you hit line speed and coast. They also look sound and look great, especially in BR Green with the whiskers. We need more Gen 1 DMUs in the game though, the bubble-car would be my choice
Hear, hear, starting with a 104 for Peak Forest, of which a blue one would be quite at home on NTP, well the Manchester end at least.
