I assume it is not possible to just have 'S8' on it and have the rest blank, like on some AI trains? Personally I see a lot of trains here with non-working PIS screens, but having the wrong destination is something that is a lot rarer (although it does happen irl). Maybe at some point the editor would allow you to add custom PIS destinations, we can dream... :)

agreed, seeing a blank PIS or one that says nicht einsteigen would be quite immersion breaking for me personally

Testing continues and is going well. Even with this slightly rough version of the passenger timetable and without any freight trains at all, I'm having a lot of fun!

The one thing I'm not making any progress on is the weird bug where the AI leaves the brake key on in the Dosto cab car. I still have no clue why it does that or how I could prevent it. Does anyone have any ideas?

This same issue happens in the base timetable too, I'm guessing it's a bug with the Dresden Reisa dosto.

Spending a quality evening: We've got DTG Matt previewing Rosenheim-Salzburg and the 111 on the small screen, and an 143-hauled RE18 service on the big screen for testing. These two (and the 110) were the DB Regio locos of my childhood. Now, when it comes to real life, I'm a 143 guy myself, but I'm sure I'll find a spot or two for a 111 in this timetable...

Don't mind me, just using the 111 for its intended purpose...

Well, of course the 111 is an (express) passenger loco, but that's not stopping some private operators from putting it on freight trains, so it won't stop me either. It's good fun on freight, too! You've got to work those manual controls to get a heavy train moving, but once you've got some speed, you can just set it into automatic and relax.

Note: this picture was taken on a test drive in Free Roam mode, not in my timetable - I'm still busy testing the passenger trains and haven't added any freight trains yet.

Aside from the 111, I'm also considering using the non-VVO-branded Dostos on the appropriate trains. This would make everything look a lot more realistic, but it would also mean you'd need Rosenheim-Salzburg for some playable (non-Talent RE15/RE18/RB31) and quite a few AI trans. Given the positive reception to Rosenheim-Salzburg I wouldn't feel too bad about that... but what's everyone else's opinion?

Edit: I have also tried the 111 with the n-Wagen in Free Roam. You can control the n-Wagen's doors from the 111, but it only works if you have the door selector switch set to "open both sides". I'll need to make a quick test train in the Editor to see if the AI driver is smart enough to figure that out or (more likely tbh) if it'll get stuck forever at the first station trying to open the doors. Once I know which coaches work properly, I'll think of a reason why a 111 would appear in Dresden with a passenger train...

Seeing how many great services are being added to this already busy and diverse route I personally don't mind having to buy every german and austrian DLC there is to make your timetable complete. I'm not sure if the 1116 would drive on DRA irl but it would be fun to see as EC. really like the desiro classic you added and all the fernverkehr options too. can't wait to use the yards at coswig and riesa. the 363 just at the chemical plant is a bit sad. even shunting in dresden would be great to add some diversity. I saw you mention that too including coupling and uncoupling services. I am honestly amazed by how much the community and this project is adding to the game. whenever editor stuff releases I can safely say that TSW4 was worth the buy just for the editor release alone. I'd love to do a project like this for salzburg - rosenheim since the freilassing yard looks very unrealistic but I have no experience or knowledge how and want to wait on that till semmeringbahn and the railjet releases

There is a Berlin-Dresden-Praha-Wien-Graz Railjet in real life, but that didn't run for most of 2023. If I wanted to include that, I'd have to change the times on a bunch of other services. Honestly, it's not really worth the effort for just one train each way that's only drivable between Dresden Hbf and Neustadt. I won't be adding any specific 1116 services, but I will configure substitution on the freight trains so it appears on those.

Agreed. I've got plans to use it at Dresden, Coswig, Niederau, the Chemical Plant (and those services will be a lot more interesting than in the original timetable!), and Riesa.

Neither did I when I started -- go for it!

Yes please do! But better check first if stuff like PIS works with the intended locos.

    fair enough. works for me

great. ran a 363 with dosto from Dresden Hbf to the siding next to the siding at Radebeul to get to the narrow gauge railway. a fun trip a bit past 10 having to give way to the S1 at the end and driving a bit of HSL with a 363 limited to 60.

I might start to lay out some ideas then. possibly a modern timetable although the flirts are not ingame yet sadly. UE4 and the dovetail editor is all I need right?

You only need the TSW editor, it is a modified version of the UE editor. You also need a Steam or Epic Games copy of TSW4 on the same computer. You'll be able to use anything you own in TSW in the editor.

The "Service mode and timetables" tutorial video is a good starter. Get ready to dive into a very time consuming rabbit hole ;)

gotta do something in between these long ass video renders. I'll look into it and might see what I can do. I'll probably use Salz - Rosh as a place to learn and if Vienna ever gets made and is dissapointing I would love to enhance that later since I am near Sussenbrunn often. thanks for the nudge and I'll make a thread of my findings if this turns into a real project.

i think this is good Idea. It always bothered me seeing the S-Bahn Dostos doing the RE services. I also think many people wil get Salzburg Rosenheim for the br 111 alone.

anyway it’s your project and you‘re decision of course :)

There isn't a way to make it always substitute the Salzburg Dostos if the player has them?

Sadly not. The substitution system is difficult to work with at the best of times because you can't just say "I'd like to let the class 112 replace this 143 please". Instead you have to go "I'd like a DB Regio loco that has at least four powered axles and a top speed of at least 160 km/h and is at most 1.5 m longer than the 143 to replace the 143 please". If you're lucky, you can figure out a combination of filters that only allows the thing that you do want and not anything that you don't. That's more difficult for coaches than it is for locos as coaches don't have a lot of the traits that DTG lets you filter by. And of course, two different DLC's versions of the same thing will have all the same data. If I tried it via substitution, you might end up with a three-car train with Dostos from three different DLCs. Not ideal in a timetable that's probably not going to be very light on RAM usage anyways...

Just to put in another vote in favour of using the non VVO Dostos as well. Nothing to add to what was said by others already…

Just an idea, but maybe forcing the doors to open on both sides in the tt could help? Haven't tried it out myself, as I don't know whether it will force the AI to use open on both sides or if it will make it necessary to open both doors.

Good idea! I didn't think of that. I'll make a test service the next time I have to resimulate the timetable.

I follow your project now for a longer time. And it's really great to see the progress. Keep the good work up! One question: Will you integrate the ICE 1113 (ICE 1) which only drive on Friday between Riesa and Dresden?

This actually works, and not just with the 111! I've made a small test timetable with a 146 and n-Wagen formation. It simulates without issues, the AI can get the doors to open and close properly, and the player can complete the instructions properly as well. Thank you very much for that suggestion - who knows how long it would've taken me to come up with this idea.

Now, who'd like a football special with a long rake of n-Wagen coaches? I can even let any DB Regio loco sub in on it so it would be drivable with the 110, 111, 112, 143, and 146!

Oops, I must have missed that one during my initial research. I've made a note and I will put it in if I can - I already need an ICE 1 formation anyway, I might as well use it for that train too.

Amazing. I started research on my project for Salzburg - Rosenheim and after debating if I should give RJ and EC trains an extra stop at Rosenheim for players to drive them and an existing westbahn service to freilassing at the time. I saw the 111 did drive N-wagen coaches too next to the dosto's and has some kind of splitting services at rosenheim I don't understand yet. also ran sandwich services. seems like dovetail missed out on a lot of stuff now I'm looking in to it more.

It might be possible to set up substitution for the dostos if you copied the RVDs and then created your own substitution tags (basically having your own RVDs for the dostos you need), although, you'll most likely end up with another dosto in the menu if you need it to be selectable.

That would mean that if someone doesn't have Rosenheim-Salzburg, they'd have the RVD, but not the rest of the content for the Dostos... Would that even work properly?

Do not know if it would work, but it should be possible to include the dostos and the timetable in different .paks, so that this problem would be avoided.

I'm unsure, I used custom RVDs in the Niddertalbahn timetable but that was just unplayable AI. Therefore, I hide them from the selection screen.

I took a train from Dresden to Leipzig and back yesterday, and I made sure to look out of the window at any interesting spots. I struck gold, because I got to see some shunting movements in the Chemical Works! This confirmed something I'd long been suspecting: the Chemical Works actually have their own little shunter in real life! It's obvious when you think about it: having wires over the sidings in Weißig station only makes sense if there's a diesel living at the Chemical Works to pick up and deliver wagons, doesn't it?

This means I can get rid of the (in my opinion, kind of tedious) services where the 363 takes like four wagons at a time over the road from Riesa to Weißig, but instead I can make much more involved and varied shunting operations inside the facility. You'll be taking long rakes of wagons into the Chemical Works from the exchange sidings at Weißig, move wagons around within the facility, assemble the outbound wagons into trains and bring them to the exchange sidings...

And of course I had to try it in Free Roam:

    Screenshot 2024-03-02 083204.jpg

The resident shunter has come down from the exchange sidings with a long rake of tankers that were brought in by a Vectron. It's now split the train in two so each part fits into one of the Entry Sidings, where it will run around the wagons to push them into storage sidings.

    I am done testing.

It's taken slightly over a month for me to test drive about sixty services. In fact, I had to do some of them more than once after making changes to the timetable. It's taken a lot of time (see below), but I now have a timetable that I'm very happy with and confident in. Now I'll extend the service pattern to the whole day, set up the diagrams properly, finalize the formations, set up substitutions...

    upload_2024-3-5_14-59-43.png

I'm just going to go outside and touch some grass first.

I'm now going through the layers one by one, extending the service pattern, grouping services into diagrams, assigning the proper formations to them, and naming and describing everything properly for the menu. The RE50 is already done, as well as the S3, RE3, RB30, and RB45 AI services.

    Screenshot 2024-03-07 093630.jpg
An S3 and an RE3, now with correctly branded Dostos, waiting for their respective departure times at Dresden Hbf.

Have you tested the 111 with n-Wagen in the timetable? I find it spawns with the 111 inside the n-Wagen and I'm not entirely sure how to fix it. When you sit in the cab, the issue fixes itself but if driven by AI it'll cause a SPAD since the loco is bouncing back and forward (not to mention it looks terrible).
    Ooops.PNG
Also, did you manage to get the n-Wagens to work with the 143? As it's not possible to control the 143 from the n-Wagen cab car, a work around is to have a loco at each end.

    I haven't yet. Oh dear...

When you say spawn, do you mean it happens when the formation starts out on the map, when it enters the map via a portal, or both?

Only very few 143s got fitted with KWS36 (as Deutsche Reichsbahn had a different system) to work with the Karlsruhe cab cars, so that is prototypical.

I've only tried it spawned on the map, I'll give it another go from a portal later. If it doesn't work still, I might see if coupling it to the coaches works at the start of the timetable.

I've had a further thought on the substitution issue. If you were to created your own formations with a unique tag for substitution, would that work? Obviously, you'd have to create a formation for every loco or formation you want to sub in but it would be better than the RVD option if it works.

It would, if you could add custom Geographic Regions to Formations. I don't think you can actually do that though.

Oh boy, simulating the timetable takes so much longer now that it's 24 hours long rather than three. I do have the S1 complete now. It took a while, simply because of the sheer number of services. At least the formations that run all day are pretty simple, but the ones that join in at rush hour have a whole bunch of ECS movements as well:

    upload_2024-3-10_13-9-9.png

The ECS services have the number of the revenue train that's associated with them included in the description, so if you want to play them right before or after a passenger service, you'll have an easier time picking the right train in the menu.

I never play just a five minute ECS thing on its own, but if I can chain it together with a revenue service, it makes me feel super immersed in the timetable. So it only feels natural for me to include that information.

Count me in for including as much information in the service descriptions as possible. This is especially useful for things like braking and PZB modes on freight services, and providing more detailed instructions for shunting services.

What information are you looking for on shunting services?

Some shunting services in existing timetables can have issues where they interact with other services. A service description can provide information on how to avoid these.
Of course if none of the shunting services have this type of issue then the descriptions are less important.

I'll be doing my best to make sure that the player doesn't have to jump through any hoops so the timetable doesn't break.

However, if you do need to know something that's not common knowledge, I'll include it in the description; one example would be the "set door controls to both sides to use n-Wagen with modern locos" thing.

I've done a little bit of testing and spawning it from a portal doesn't make a difference, and someone else has tried getting the AI to couple and that also doesn't work. If you're driving it as a player train it works fine but the second you take over another service, it'll go back to being broken.

That's unfortunate. Maybe it's related to the bug where you can't couple anything to the 111 in Formation Designer? If so, there's probably a good chance it will get fixed.

For the future freight services, I'd love if you could add in the description what it's carrying, and whether it is loaded/unloaded.
This is looking really good, really looking forward to it.
