    S2 is in!

Just to show what kind of work I'm currently doing, here's a screenshot from the Playback tool showing the data tracks: layers that I haven't changed from the test timetable at the top, layers I've extended recently at the bottom.

Okay, bad news: turns out that this also happens when you couple the Rosenheim-Salzburg Dostos with the 143. I might need to go back to the VVO ones.

That's annoying, seems like the Rosenheim-Salzburg stock must be bugged when coupled with stuff from other routes. I assume down to how the 111 has been set up.

i tested it now and the DCZ dosto looks like every other dosto, so you can take them as long as the Bug exists

The S8 services are mostly in. I've had some problems with the signalling at Dresden Hbf when coupling the trains. It seems like in timetable mode, contacting the dispatcher to enter an occupied block does nothing in Dresden Hbf, and the trains get stuck forever. I will need to investigate further to see if I can make it work somehow. This might take a while, and I'm also going on holiday soon, so don't worry if y'all have to wait for a bit until the next progress update.

Interested in how you will fix the coupling. I'll need some of that on my project too. and a decent use of the salzburg yard. sounds like you are making a load of progress. A well deserved vacation. I'll be taking one to vienna soon to take some pictures and maybe get some ideas for when a route there gets released or some easter egg service to put in.

I've had similar issues. It seems to depend on which routes have been correctly set up in the map. It might help to add an intermediate 'go to/via' instruction to the shunt signal just before the occupied block so the coupling instruction doesn't require a service to pass multiple blocks/signals before entering it.

I had an intermediate Go Via instruction and it didn't work. Turns out that all I needed to do was turn that into a Stop At instruction. Somehow I didn't think of that yesterday... It now works perfectly.

Right, now I'll go on holiday.

I've been back at work on the timetable for a few days now, but I'm stuck on an extremely weird issue that I can't find an explanation for:

If I couple an extra Desiro to a Trilex formation while it is in the Vault (off-map), the resulting formation gets stuck at Dresden-Neustadt, but it doesn't happen immediately. Let me explain:
    • The train (one Desiro Classic unit) spawns on a siding in Dresden Hbf. It does a shunting move into a platform track, sits around there for a bit, forms a playable service to Dresden-Neustadt, becomes an AI service, and leaves the map through a portal.
    • While it is in the Vault (it doesn't matter whether I do this at the end of the last or at the beginning of the next service; it's broken either way) I couple a second Desiro to it.
    • It then leaves the Vault, runs AI to Dresden-Neustadt, the AI service ends, the playable service to Dresden Hbf starts, it runs to Dresden Hbf, the playable service ends, it sits around for half an hour, and then it goes back to Dresden-Neustadt, and back off the map. The weird part is that this works with no issues.
    • It then sits in the Vault for a bit. This time, I'm not coupling or uncoupling anything, it just sits there.
    • It leaves the Vault again, runs to Dresden-Neustadt, the AI service ends, the player service starts, and now it gets stuck. The first instruction is to load/unload passengers, and it never manages to do that for some reason. The log is full of "trigger door lock state" lines, so my best guess is that the doors don't open - but why??? They did work on the last round trip! They also work if I assign the exact same instructions (the actual same ones, not just a copy) to a new formation.
Does anyone have any ideas what on Earth the problem might be? I've been staring at this for actual days and I have no clue. If everything just stopped working immediately, I wouldn't be so confused, but I can't wrap my head around the fact that it only breaks on the second round trip after coupling in the vault.

I had the exact same issue with the Desiros randomly (but consistently the same services in a series of services) getting stuck on closing their doors at the start of a service. I found a workaround by assigning a different platform, but didn't find a fix for what seems to be a bug. Replacing the load/unload instruction by a fresh one sometimes helped but most of the time the issue persisted.

See our conversation from a few months ago:

Oh, right, I didn't remember just how similar that case was! For you, was it a specific platform that was affected or was it random?

It happened most consistently on one platform (Aschaffenburg platform 4) and was solved when I moved all those services to another one (platform 5). I kept the first unaffected services of the day at p4 and moved all services onwards from the bugged services to p5, which required another layer of AI services to switch from platform 5 to platform 4. Luckily those services were unaffected.

Interesting. In my case, they seem to dislike Dresden-Neustadt platform 4. Which is strange as I've already got a (Desiro!) formation on RB33 using the same platform with no issues at all...

I'd prefer to keep the Trilex on 4 as there aren't any other services that can use platform 4...

Couldn't you solve the issue by using two formations instead of coupling units off-map?

After further trials, apparently it's not actually caused by the coupling: it's still broken if I remove the couple instruction altogether.

Dresden-Neustadt platform 4 seems to not be the culprit either: if I just have it wait instead of load/unload at Dresden-Neustadt, the train gets stuck at Dresden-Mitte instead. Letting the service stop at Dresden-Neustadt platform 8 instead also didn't resolve the problem.

I've also tried replacing the troublesome instructions, placing an additional wait instruction before the load/unload one, and adjusting the stop marker at Dresden-Neustadt. Nothing has helped so far.

Again, This is the third layer I'm making using the Desiro, and the other two (using the exact same paths and platforms!) are working flawlessly. I have no clue at all what's going on.

I didn't find one solution that solved everything too, I could do some optimisation on my Desiro layer, but I'm not doing it because it is finally functional and I'm anxious to break it again by messing with it. It seems to be a hard to reproduce bug related to the Desiro. I can only recommend to remove the broken services for now, shift your work to something else (if possible) and come back to try to fix it another time.

I do need to have the services in there since otherwise I might end up putting conflicting trains in without noticing. Still a good call though. I'll just put 628s or 612s on that layer for now.

I had a few issues with the 642 doing similar things, sometimes I had to delete quite a few instructions either side of the problematic instruction.

Sometimes I did have to resort to using a different platform but only for a couple of services.

Happy to hear that! I'm still making a basic version of the Trilex layer using the 612 (the 628 is too slow) for now, but if you found a way around the issue, hopefully I will be able to replace that with the 642 and add the coupling/uncoupling operations at Dresden Hbf either shortly before or after version 1.0. I just don't want to deal with it right now, I'd much rather start putting in freight trains...

what is your approach for researching freight? I've been thinking about it a lot but I have no idea how to approach it. wondering how dtg came to their trips and train numbers. wondering what the abbreviations mean too, if they aren't made up that is.

Apparently DTG have some source they get timetable information from. I do not, so I'll just be labeling them as "Westbound Intermodal" or "Eastbound Mixed Freight" in the menu. As for when and where the trains actually run, I've now spent quite a lot of time just sitting at stations in Dresden and noting down the freight trains that I saw. I've also got a good collection of YouTube videos from people trainspotting at various locations along the route. railfanatlas.com is also very helpful for seeing what kinds of train run on a specific line. All of that means I've got a good idea which proportion of traffic is what sort of train. On DRA, the biggest category by far is intermodals, then there are about equal amounts of car carrier, tank wagon, and grain hopper unit trains, and then everything else (steel unit trains, mixed freight, open wagons...). I'm just going to express all that as percentages out of 100 and then I'll let a random number generator decide when what type of train appears where, and where it wants to go. That will wreak havoc on the passenger timetable of course, so then I'll have to play dispatcher, change their routes, put them in sidings, and make them wait, until the passenger trains work again.

Keep in mind that this is what I'm planning to do, and I don't actually know how well it will work yet. Also, DRA has a lot of freight trains (about 100 each way in real life) and almost all of them have off-map origins and destinations - on a different kind of route, a different approach may work a lot better.

Oh boy. Turns out that I can't not couple and uncouple trains in Dresden, because the timetable isn't balanced: more (but shorter) trains run into Dresden Hbf than leave it. However, if I need to couple trains, I can't use the 612, because two 612s are too long for the sidings in Dresden Hbf...

So back to trying to make the 642 work it is. Yay...!

Ah fair enough. I found a really old website mentioned somewhere and will try and see if yours has something to offer too. Sadly I can’t sit at Salzburg or Rosenheim all day since I live in the netherlands. I will be traveling through there with a Railjet next week though. And on YouTube there is a good livestream of freilassing I’ll watch when the station rebuild is done and operations are back to normal.

Hope you can fix that. It’s a nice train. Even with GSMR being in austria all the time. I might use it on Salzburg since the austrian dmu’s aren’t ingame and in 2018 the desiro’s drove that REX. Don’t want to use too many 628’s. Although I might layer them both on that service since they drove that too in 2015/2016

So far I thought the Desiro problem had something to do with entering and leaving portals. This morning I had an idea: why don't I just send the Trilex trains up the Flughafen branch? That way they'd never have to use any portals in the first place.

I tried it out and it didn't work.

With the amout of things that don't cause the Desiro problem that I've found so far, you'd assume I'd be getting closer to a solution. Doesn't feel like it though...

The current thing I'm trying is this:

I took a copy of the S8 layer since this is already working with the Desiro. I'm now transforming it into the Trilex timetable step by step.

This is taking ages: after every single little change I'm making I have to resimulate the layer (to find out if it still works after the last change) and make a backup of it (in case the next change will make it stop working). I think it's the most realistic path to a working Trilex timetable though.

Absolutely. Can't say how exactly I'll do it given that we don't know how exactly DTG are going to release it, but I'll 100% be using it.

I can barely believe it, but thanks to taking the methodical approach, I have figured out the Desiro problem!

    It's a weird one.

The Desiros get stuck at Dresden-Neustadt if they stopped at Dresden Hbf platforms 6 or 8 during their previous run. Dresden Hbf platforms 5 or 7 do work. I still don't know why that happens, but now I'll be able to work around it!

Getting the trains onto platform 7 will be easy, as I can just swap them with the RE50 that currently uses that one. The Talent II and Dostos aren't as picky after all.

Platform 5 is more of a problem, as it already has two S8 trains per hour on it. However, I believe that if I move one of these per hour onto platform 2, I think I'll be able to handle the other S8 and the two Trilex trains each hour with just platforms 5 and 7! Assigning three, or even four, trains per hour to two platforms does sound incredibly easy at first, but the Trilex trains have a nearly 30 minute turnaround time, so it is a challenge to make everything fit.

Real life S8 trains actually did use platform 2 for a while during 2023, although this was because of construction work, and not because the trains stopped working if you put them on platform 6. (And yes, I've confirmed that platform 2 actually works...)

It'll still be a bit until I've got a working timetable, as I'm busy with other things on the weekend, but I hope y'all are as happy as I am to learn that (and how) it's actually possible in the first place.

It's very weird. Isaak, Perks390 and I have all encountered it on the 642, but it doesn't seem to affect any other trains.

I've come a long way, but there's also still a long way to go:
    • Long distance trains (that should be pretty quick)
    • One-offs (railtours, local freight, shunting etc - probably going to take a while because they're all unique)
    • Through freight (also a big chunk of work, about 200 trains in total with different paths, formations etc)
There will also be testing and bug fixing in parallel to all that. And of course there couls always be something on the roadmap next week (...IC cab car...?) that makes me go "ooh, I need to put that in", so I can't promise I won't be making more work for myself.

Posted it before but will mention it again:cool:

I would really like to see some kind of working site being set up, requiring some kind of wrong track ops or similar. I know, it’s not just a „one off“, as it requires other services to go out of their way, but it could be done later at night, however, could require assembly of working trains throughout the day or similar… would be nice

Sounds like something my Salzburg - Rosenheim timetable would lend to very well with the construction at Salzburg Hbf and Salzburg Liefering. Sadly I can’t use the ROBEL yard since that is just about not on the map. I’ll see if there’s some files on real operations there though.

So here I have some fun ideas :
-The blue 363 doing a railtour from Meißen to Coswig during the afternoon (And back)
-The red 363 doing some shunting of the red coaches from BRO -> Capture d’écran 2024-04-07 à 10.08.41.png (Could be anywhere but somewhere near Coswig sound nice)
-A Traxx rescuing a broken 187 from Röderau
-A railtour with the 103 from Dresden to Riesa and then the 103 is replaced by a 110 coming Röderau in Riesa.
-The same 110 go back to Dresden with the railtour
-During the night the 103 still in Riesa goes back to Dresden and the 110 back to Röderau
-The 204 bringing some new double deck coaches to Dresden
-A railtour with the mint-green 628 to and from Großenhain (Maybe with a stop at the abandonned old station if possible)
-The 155 doing some local freight (The Blue Press or the red one are both nice)
-An ICE 1 engine going solo somewhere in the route
-A Traxx rescuing an ICE 3 in Riesa (Could go to Dresden)

Yes, I'm very keen on doing this!

There isn't a portal at the end of the Meißen branch sadly. That means I can have exactly one train coming from/going towards Nossen and no more. I've already planned a nice freight train that'll go to Coswig and have some interesting shunting moves there. There will be railtours to Meißen using the 110 though.

    Already planned!

I wanted to do that as well, so I tried it out in Free Roam a while ago. The problem is that it's actually kind of difficult to have a loco be "broken" in timetable mode: the pantograph up/down and MCB on/off commands are synced across locos, so if someone tries to play realistically and take the pantograph down for coupling, they'll end up with a completely functional double header, rather than a rescue mission. So I don't think I'll include something like this.

I've got a bunch of fun railtours planned. I'm not going to spoil what exactly each one will do just yet though...

    Yes!

I'll configure everything so you can use any freight loco you like, including the 155 of course.

There isn't really any reason for a single ICE1 power car to be in Dresden I'm afraid. They're neither stationed or maintained here.

That would require modded vehicles, which I'm not going to be using.

Can you elaborate a bit more on how to add pantograph/MCB commands to a timetable? I didn't know this was possible. Thanks!

You can actually do it by deactivating the Battery but idk how to do it in the Editor yet. Only thing possible is to spawn it as a parked Preset

You can't do that. What I meant was: the dead loco spawns in the "parked" preset. I then couple an active one to it. If the player then, for any reason, uses the pantograph up or MCB on switches, both locomotives carry out that command. So if you go "oh wait, I should actually use the other pantograph for this move" you'll inadvertently activate the "dead" loco. I'm just not a fan of putting anything this finnicky into the timetable...

Edit: disregard that. I'm not actually sure if the battery on the dead loco was properly turned off when I tried this.
