I hail from the province of Newfoundland, Canada, and I think part of my love for trains always came from the fact that my province no longer has any.

The last trains stopped running in the early 1980s, and I was fortunate enough to get to ride on one of the last runs on a school outing.

Over the last thirty years every inch of track was torn up and removed, and now has become a province wide hiking/snowmobile trail. A small heritage line on the east coast was unable to stay afloat and closed about fifteen years ago.

There’s plenty of stuff on the web about the topic; being an island, and using narrow gauge compared to standard in the rest of Canada presented some unique challenges (locos coming across on the ferry had to be ‘revised’ to allow it to run on the narrow gauge track.

The link below is just a quick summary of the railroad.
