Branded is realistic. This is a simulation of the real thing.

Actually that sounds like a fascinating Dovetail Live article... i'll talk to the audio team and the community team about that.

But, short answers just for conversations sake:

    What equipment?
We use Zoom recorders, I think the latest ones we're using are Zoom F3's - they are 32bit recorders which means you are unlikely to ever peak the audio and lose anything which is superb for this. The zoom recorders are linked with some mic's - don't remember what they are.

We also have a pair of Zoom H6's and we've also used Zoom H4's (vectron was done with a pair of 4's I think).

Our standard kit bag for a recording trip though is 4 F4's and 2 H6's, and we hire in the microphones and other accessories as needed.

    How?
The zoom recorders are usually cable tied firmly to the loco somewhere e.g. for bogie running sounds you might strap them, and the mic, to the underside of the ladder or something like that. The F3 has some great firm mountings that can be used for this purpose along with some strong ties. We have a range of mufflers and other things that mic's get wrapped in to eliminate wind noise too.

    Where?
You want bogie running sounds, you want traction motors, you want diesel engines, you want cab ambience, you want fan noises - its all down to the loco, but to work best in TSW you want to capture as much individual separate audio as possible. Don't just get "bogie running with traction motors and diesel engine" because all those things run at different speeds and are all driven differently by simugraph if you want them to be. E.g. engine idle, traction motors in electric braking and running at 50mph vs engine at max, traction motors max and running at 30mph - wildly different audio. Capture all those different sources and then when you get back to the studio you can edit it all up and then start tying it back to simugraph.

Adam has a few photos of equipment tied into place so should be able to do a good article on how all the recording is done and then talk about how thats then brought into the game.

Let me see what I can sort.

    Matt.

This is good stuff. Very much appreciated and noted. I look forward to seeing what comes of that article.

Audio equipment, LASTools, more than likely some Unreal assets, figuring out how to license a long-dead shortline railway company... Whew, route/loco development is becoming a harder and harder to swallow pill financially by the day lol. Thankfully, this is more-or-less a multi-year process.

Speaking of LASTools, is BLAST2DEM the definitive way of rasterizing .LAS layers into .GeoTIFF for editor prep? I've used it already, and am pleased with the results, however I'm not comfortable going forward with my route project using data that was obtained by bypassing a licensing watermark. That, plus it's unnecessarily adding processing time and additional artifacting. The solution is either to find an alternative program (I haven't yet) or cough up 2,000 Euros for a license. That's gonna take a few months to save up...

I'll get Lukas to look at writing up a LIDAR tutorial - we dont use either of those tools, just free ones, and we have our own LIDAR integration in the editor thats designed to make it easier.

Voted for no unbranded content personally. The real liveries and logo add to the experience for me :)

I think another option should be added that if UK branding can't be provided for modern TOCs that DTG should go for BR Blue era instead. More historical routes please! :D

I don't know how this is overlooked in the unofficial, albeit pinned, TSW Editor Documentation, as well as by me initially, but QGIS can already do rasterization in-program, making the separate tools I mentioned completely redundant. My apologies for the unnecessary question before, but at least your input made me realize I'd missed something. It seems I'll have to give all this another go very shortly.

And to OP, sorry for derailing the thread a bit. As far as licensing goes, I'm of the opinion that licensing is almost a guaranteed necessity, as the poll seems to indicate is the majority opinion. Getting the "feel" of a route/loco just right can be difficult when you have to specifically avoid infringing on the very work you're trying to copy...

As DTG have said; this forum isn't representative of TSW players.

Out of curiosity what is the stance on BR related branding in the game? Do the DfT own the rights to BR stuff? I know LSL have bought the InterCity brand from the DfT (atleast that's what I understand, unless they have a concession with the DfT to use it).

Secondly, if for example you were making the WCML and, let's use Avanti as an example, and they did not want to give the branding licence, could you backdate the route into Virgin Trains days? As I believe there is an odd arrangement where the DfT also own the rights to previous TOC branding once a franchise ends. Now I could have misunderstood how that works, but that's my understanding of it.
