I would like to see Gen 9 have sliders though to be able to adjust the graphics ourselves. At least in that situation the Series S recommended settings can be lower than the Series X. Similar to what they are doing with MSFS.

But I would love to see what Ultra looks like on the Series X.

I heard Dresden used to be a crashy one for gen 8, and Koln was (not sure if either got fixed/optimised)

ultra would be good to see, I thought that for a while when I see PC players be able to set them.

It appears DRA is better but with the addition of the Vectron, it's hard to tell the difference since it will put more pressure on performance. The same goes for Koln, I try to avoid busy times so the game doesn't crash, interestingly the depot outside Aachen is fine, sometimes a slight fps drop but no crash, touchwood.

More people own an XBOX One or PS4, than an XBOX Series S/X or PS5.

So if you want DTG to go out of business and be left without any kind of train simulator to play at all, stopping support for Gen 8 is a great way to do it.

As much i complain about DTG, it's always better to have a bit of something, than a lot of nothing.

Xbox audio is over-compressed to the point that it is painful to listen to (high screeching alarms and aws).
This is to make it a small footprint so it fits into ram on older consoles.
It really is time DTG dropped them, TSW5 will be a good opportunity to do so.

Couple things that have been touched on but are worth reiterating:

    1) At last word, gen 8 was the majority of players--still around 60%, I believe. Dropping that size player base would be insane. When the population has shifted to where developing for gen 8 no longer makes economic sense, they'll stop.

    2) Development is done for gen 9 and PC, then the gen 8 versions are scaled down as needed for those consoles. IIRC, Matt has brought up one caveat, though I don't remember the details, but as a general rule, gen 8 is not holding anything back.

It is what it is. I am a PS4 player and the game runs great 95% of the time with some really notable graphical exceptions that I can live with, knowing I am on a lesser powered machine.

It'd be interesting to see what the player split is now. I'm very much a casual gamer and while PS5s are still hovering around the £400/50 mark there isn't a cat in hells chance of me buying one, especially as my PS4 still does everything I need it to do and more. It is still a pretty good console even over a decade on after release.

I feel if a TSW5 comes out this year Gen 8 will still be supported, next year maybe not. Will depend on the sales for Gen 8 platforms going forward. If they drop Gen 8 (and companies miles bigger than DTG are still making new Gen 8 games for the forseeable) and I am still on my PS4 then they lose my custom. I won't lose any sleep over that but if say even 30% of the player base is in my position then that is a pretty big financial hit.

Anyone who thinks that the problems many players have with TSW are due to DTG's continuing support of gen 8 consoles is naive and misinformed.

Anyone who believes that flying trees, floating buses and broken or missing scenery will all disappear if gen8 is dropped is dreaming. And the belief that we'll suddenly get better and longer routes with more trains and busier timetables is just wacky.

The issues that people are complaining about go deeper and are much more complex than just abandoning one third of the TSW market, which would actually make DTG's revenue fall precipitously and therefore their capacity for development and bug-fixing more problematic.

In other words, abandoning gen 8 now would make the game worse not better.

I don’t think anyone thinks major issues would be drastically resolved, sure they would have more time and resources to divert elsewhere these things could be it or other things though.

the only way that not leaving behind Gen 8 could make things worse is the loss of revenue, game wise minus DTG finances it’s nothing but positive and no negative, sure they probably won’t leave Gen 8 for awhile, money speaks louder, though this is a thread on personal viewpoints of leaving Gen 8 or not, and DTG’s finances are not personal to me so it’s reasonable they don’t apply with my thoughts on this topic, as I’ve said as long as it takes too much revenue to do away with Gen 8 it’s bad as a whole for DTG, when that switches up they’re a goner.

Being realistic DTG doing better with quality costs them or fixing bugs, I don’t care I want my DLC’s etc to be the best they can be.

people’s personal finances ain’t going to be a factor though, Lego don’t make things cheaper for anyone, Apple don’t make things cheaper for anyone etc, If you can’t buy you’re simply just not that products customer.

Can’t justify replacing my PS4. Not only are these things expensive, but I’ve heard people saying PS5 performance is poor too with lag etc.

Goodbye PS4 = (unfortunately) Goodbye DTG for me.

thats new to me do you have a source for how many people use each console be interested to see this

    Also lets look at figures:

Playstation 4 to total sales: 117.2 million thats since release on 15th november 2013
Playstation 5 sales: 50 million thats since release on 12th November 2020
So looking at those figures alone it has been 10 years since ps 4 release meaning they sell on average 11 million a year
Playstation 5 sell over 16 million per year. So i would say the ps 5 is certainly more popular in the long run giving current sales

your numbers will be off, yearly sales are not equal, around the first year will be the highest.

According to Sony, the PS5 is already in it's latter half of it's console cycle which means that it won't be long now until we start talking about Gen 10 consoles. A PS5 Pro is heavily rumoured to release this year as well which will be another console DTG will have to optimize for. It's unknown if Microsoft is going to do its own pro version but if they do that would be yet another console to optimize for bringing the total to 9 consoles.

Now if were DTG I would drop Gen 8 support once these new Pro models come out, I know people will be upset but these consoles are over 10 years old and they can't be supported forever. I don't blame people for not getting a Gen 9 console because quite frankly the quantity of exclusive games Sony and Microsoft have been releasing has been very poor and there's no reason for most players to upgrade yet, but the hardware is miles better and is capable of so much more (except the Series S and it's pitiful 8GB of memory thanks Microsoft for bottlenecking this generation of consoles!)

Not sure UE 4.26 will be able to generate a different build for the PS5 Pro (or even gen 10) so it will likely be running the vanilla PS5 version with the possible option of a boost mode. This alone should help the PS5 build run better as it currently suffers from a regrettably low base fps.

Gen8 players pay full price for all their DLCs. Although they're not able to benefit from all possible features.

Is the rest of the community, especially the PC Master Race, prepared for a hefty DLC price increase when DTG cuts off that still considerably large player base? Because I suspect that's exactly what will have to happen.

And besides: I don't believe in past console generation development "holding back" future iterations. The root causes - IMHO- are to be found in DTG's amateurish program management capacities. They've long lost control over all their iterations. The track record of the infamous one-step-forward-two-step-backwards patch releases and exciting new bugs in every "new" TSW version are proof enough.

Lastly the PC world counts with much wider spread hardware base configuration than game consoles: From the asthmatic potato PC to the latest NASA Mars Mission PC can be found anything. And the evolution goes on steadily. So, where do you cut a threshold there for which PC you'd develop and for which ones not?

It's a game issue, not a hardware issue. Although when it comes to the PS4, it becomes... both...

Indeed, the PS5 should be capable of approaching the level of smoothness of the Series X TSW build, yet it seems woefully unoptimised.

Since all platforms get affected by cutted content due performance reasons of gen8, from my side a clear "yes" vote. (Should have dropped it already with tsw2 in my personal opinion)

That begs the question: What would be "uncutted" content? Did you ever see it?

The PS4 version of TSW is indeed heavily cut down to poor when you compare it to the PS5 version. It's day and night with PS5 getting all available layers, full traffic and train length, far distance shadow and asset drawing etc. And all that in 4k res.

But according to you, also this was" cutted content due performance reasons of gen8"? What would be the full, uncut version then?

I think they could soon switch TSW to gen 9 but at least keep tsw 4 or they might cut gen8 after TSW5 I just made the bump to gen 9 Finally have a series x.. I been playing TSW more since upgrading the game does look way better smoother etc than on my gen 8 x box 1 ..i also have a 1tb series S i can see differences between the S and X like better rock foilage etc looks more crisper detailed etc camera pans smoother ..i can play the full timetable on SEHS on my old x b 1 it would crash everytime even i even deleted it ..re downloaded it in to my new series x and can play it fine now..the other thing is now both sony and Microsoft are talking about their next consoles gen 10 and even 9.5 upgrade series X and sony talking PS5pro ..i dont think and from hat ive seen most gen9 games dont even tap the full potential of systems now ..but they already going to want our money for new system that prob most games wont tap full potential either

Definitely No. Because it's senseless. I bought a PS5 especially to drive the longer north american freight trains. But since I bought it, no new american freight route came out. The stuttering is also not much better.

Afraid it’s a fundamental reality that Gen 8 just can’t handle everything the newer ones can, apart from timetable and perhaps the odd other feature everything else what can’t be seperated must not be built further than what Gen 8 can handle, thus the holdback, it could honestly go as far as affecting what DLC’s come, not just in what a route can have but if theirs a route already out and at peak (full up on memory usage etc) on Gen 8 then they can’t put out a loco dlc purely on the basis Gen 8 can’t support it, and they can’t release them separately

Among other reasons such as time/resources taken to get the Gen 8 to work is times/resources taken away from other things etc (that’s the extra separate stuff timetable/other features being made separate/optimisation)

At the eventual dropping of Gen 8 will DTG take this opportunity to use that time and resources to make better the currrent Gen content ? That’s a different question what requires their input.

I did lots of comparing while i was deciding to for series x or ps5 watched a few you tube videos how TSW looks on series x vs ps 4 both were close but was reading forums on here about some of the issues on ps5 vs series x the part about the dlc limit on ps5 but main factor why i chose series x was financial buying a ps5 for me not be sensible would have to start all over buying TSW for it...vs the series x i can download what tsw content i have which is a lot ..Ihope someday to get a ps 5 maybe when sim rail comes to console and from what i read it going to gen 9 only just says coming to x b series s and x ps5

I don't see how dropping GEN 8 will make the game better. I don't play on Gen 8. Many of the issues with this game have nothing to do with Gen 8 and DTG have noted that Gen 8 doesn't hold the game back. Dropping Gen 8 in my view will not change the state of the game as it is.

guess maybe they cant but couldnt they separate the versions for each system have specific gen 8 version and gen 9 version pc version then each could be made to handle and use each systems capabilities so quality wont have to suffer

That’s a bad interpretation of the available figures. The latest numbers we have for PS5 are up to the third quarter of the fourth year of sales. In the corresponding quarter for PS4, the cumulative total sold was slightly more than PS5 at this same point in its life, 57.2 million for the PS4 and 54.8 million for PS5. The PS4 was more popular than the PS5 this far into production.

You could say that PS4 sell an average of 11 million a year but that includes the years that PS4 sales have dropped to almost zero because the PS5 released. PS4 sold 20 million in the fourth year (April 2016 to March 2017) of production and we will soon see what PS5 sells in this, its fourth year (April 2023 to March 2024). It will likely be comparable.

As for current player numbers for both, I can’t find any numbers.

But if numbers continue to grow for ps5 it will outsell the ps4 VERY fast. The figures I posted are the latest figures. If you can find newer ones I would be interested to see them so please share them.

The reality is DTG probably won't move to UE5 for at least another 5 years, so as long as the cash is incoming, why change? When we do move we'll all be complaining why they're still supporting gen 9 lol.

I’ve just posted the newest figures for PS5 sales and for total sales of both consoles at the same point in their lifetime. PS4 had sold more and was selling faster than the PS5 for the same time on the market. There’s nothing newer to find.

That is just my personal opinion.., in fact DTG has no point to drop it as long gen8 releases are a substantial part of the cash income, the playerbase is there and the hardware is keeping up with the dlc scope.

If it is about american freight, gen 9 is definitely better. Longer trains (around 100 cars SMH, around 80 at HSC and CJP). But we have 3! of that routes in TSW only. At NJT they canceled freight completely and at AVL the length of the Intermodal trains is around 40 cars only even on PC and Gen8.

So because of that little amount of bit more realistic long american freight trains there is no need for cutting Gen8 support.

The opposite would be the better solution:

    Hard working on optimization.

I think some members have the illusion, that things getting so much better after dropping Gen8.

You can see that at the Arosa and the Bernina line. Arosa line had a poor grafics almost without trees. The explanation from Rivet was: It's not better possible because of consoles. 3 years later Bernina Line looks much better even if we have Gen8 support.

    Next Example: Sand Patch

DTG explained for 2 years porting on consoles is impossible, because SPG is to big.

Then TSW 2 came out and SPG became possible for Gen8 consoles.

In my perspective I can see that the Gen 8 is very outdated and needing to take time and resources away from other things to keep up, aswell as what it can cause to not happen, overall theirs potential for newer Gen’s/PC to improve instead if the Gen 8 wasn’t a factor.

whether I think that opening opportunity will be taken by DTG is another question of which it’s safer to say no to.

DTG won’t drop 8 Gen for a while yet (probably years if I had to guess) it’s not the profitable thing to do.

edit: in a way it’s like multiplayer or perhaps but not so much the editor (I say perhaps as it has potential, it’s just not being utilised that way currently), it has no benefit to me and the benefits that could be aimed at me come from not allowing it and putting the time/resources elsewhere (whether they do that is the other question the same way), on the other hand if DTG find it profitable they will aim for it regardless.

About multiplayer I agree with you. It makes not really sense (except to make it possible to have an engineer and a conducter at the loco with realistic role play, same with the engineer and the fireman). Railways are closed networks with fix timetables.

tsw 2 with sand patch when came to console is what brought me into TSW DTG took the step into the console realm that so far theyve held the niche on even if not perfect with everything ive enjoyed tsw even if sometimes i get fustrated with things like the debacle with US freight on recently

Old consoles will be supported as long as it's economically viable to do so....and while they currently occupy such a large % of the customer base, this will not be any time soon.

Old consoles are not holding back new consoles and PC from a development standpoint ....those users are holding themselves back by staying on old hardware.

DTG have said themselves they can’t do everything separately currently between the Gen’s only certain things, for as long as that is the case those things can only be done to a maximum of what Gen 8 can handle, then theirs the points on time/resources it takes just to make what can be separate, separate
